Upon seeing him, the viscount didn't dare to even open his mouth to justify himself. He knew it was the end. No matter how hard he tried, nothing could be changed anymore. If he opposed him, both he and his house would sink even deeper into ruin. So, he stepped back.
Zola found herself in the sa situation. Her arrogance had long faded amidst the Ladies of the Forest. They had already warned her: if the Royal Inspector caught you, it was the end.
And neither she nor the viscount had luck on their side, as they were caught by none other than Arthur. Arthur was known for having achieved his position through complete dedication to the kingdom and its laws. He was also a fierce defender of the n of the kingdom against injustice. Now, he looked at Zola and the viscount with contempt.
His voice pierced through them both:
"For you, this situation was nothing more than a joke before I arrived," he said in a quiet but terrifying voice.
Hearing this, they both quickly shook their heads in denial.
"I think it's a joke," he continued, looking directly at the viscount. "Not only do you already have a wife, but you cheated on her with a married woman!" His voice grew louder with every word.
The viscount hung his head in sha.
Arthur then turned his gaze to Zola.
"And as for you, I've heard plenty about you from Lord Leon."
At these words, Zola's eyes instinctively shifted to Leon, who at that mont was grinning demonically and showing her the middle finger. She wanted to shout at him, but she managed to suppress her anger in the presence of the Inspector.
Looking back at her, Arthur continued:
"He told all about your cris and sches, including your attempts to have him killed. Rest assured, I will ensure an investigation is conducted against you."
Hearing this, Zola could only clench her fists and lower her head.
"And as for you, Viscount," Arthur said, "I will make sure your wife learns of your actions. Additionally, you will pay a substantial compensation to the Bartfort family. With that, I take my leave."
With these words, Arthur walked away but threw a smile at Leon before leaving.
Leon returned the smile and waved his hand as if in farewell.
After Arthur left, Barkus decided to speak to Zola one last ti. A calm smile rested on his face.
Looking at her, he began:
"Zola, I'm glad you admitted this to , even if you didn't really try to. From this day forward, our paths will part. Thank you for everything. I hope things go well for you."
Saying this, he turned away and walked off with Leon.
"Oh, look at you, Barkus, your face is glowing with happiness! You must've been waiting for this day, you bastard!" Zola shouted after him in fury. "Do you think you've won? That you've rid yourself of ?"
She seed ready to continue her rant, but Barkus ignored her and, along with Leon, headed toward the house.
