He wiped his eyes, hoping he was seeing things due to fatigue, but one more look at the do and his hopes were shattered.
There was a crack on that do, and several more were starting to appear at a rapid pace.
"The Do!!"
"Sothing is wrong with the do!!"
So sharp soldiers picked up on the deadly change and shouted, alerting the rest of the soldiers and recruits on the wall, who in turn alerted the instructors.
Less than a minute later, ca rushing instructor, Josh who had a dark look on his face, barking out orders for the cannons to be prepped for fire and the rifles being ready to fire at any mont, doubling the tension on the wall.
’How did they crack the wall?’
Holland’s grip on his weapon tightened, trying to push down any thoughts that could make him more terrified than he already was.
Instructor Josh also shared the sa thoughts as him,
’It makes no sense, it’s the camp’s greatest defence. These many beasts on it are like ants, they shouldn’t even leave a scratch!’
’They didn’t even use that attack!’
His mind ran through multiple possibilities and managed to settle on none.
He knew more than little Holland did and yet had no understanding of what was happening.
People mistook the do for a concrete object that had a hard cap on the damage or load it could withstand. They were wrong
The do was an energy barrier that could theoretically resist any magnitude of load or attacks as long as there was enough energy.
This simple fact was the reason why the higher-ups of the camp were completely terrified, more so than the recruits even, when the first do was torn to shreds in a single attack.
They knew how the dos worked, and in that mont, that knowledge felt like a curse.
That one attack had evaporated and completely fried their energy reserves for the first do.
That much energy could resist the current number of beasts for days on end before finally giving in.
Origin knew that,
The commander knew that,
The other instructors knew that,
And Josh knew that too.
Which was why the news that cracks had started to appear rattled them to the core.
"It’s happening!!!"
"Get ready to fire!!!"
The soldiers at the cannons, noticed his dazed look and gave a loud cry to call him back.
’Fire? I haven’t given that order yet’
Josh was about to contest that call when he saw the very reason behind it.
The light of the second do was dimming at a rapid pace, starting to blink in and out of existence, showing that it was going to collapse any mont soon.
"How??"
Confusion was the only emotion he felt, watching the do vanish above their heads.
The second do had barely lasted a whole day after the first one was torn to shreds re hours after being deployed.
Holland watched the do fizzle out of existence like it had been sucked dry.
The beasts imdiately started falling towards them like raindrops, but the bloody splatter that appeared in the sky, reminded them of the existence of a third do, one whose integrity they had learnt not to rely upon.
With the short relief that ca from the realization that he wasn’t dead yet, he adjusted his grip on the rifle once more and let out a shot, killing a beast. Or at least he thought...
He couldn’t really tell, there was a literal sea of them right at the do, one beast falling to the ground would be easily replaced by the countless others around it.
Regardless, he continued shooting, followed by the other soldiers and recruits without waiting for the order from Josh.
The order had been given far earlier.
"Fire once they cross the second do"
They were supposed to be able to cut a rather sizable chunk of the beast army as they approached the third do from the second, but that strategy beca null the mont they blotted out the sky, plastering themselves over every inch of the do.
Now, they were already at the third do, with several beasts climbing back to the top.
The plasma cannons were fired simultaneously, clearing the hordes of beasts trying to climb the do.
’Till another seven hours then’
Holland kissed his teeth, still firing recklessly at the horde before him.
In a situation like this, their cannons were basically one-ti wonders.
"Fire again!!"
Instructor Josh’s voice rang like thunder across the walls, causing other units to pause.
"But the systems haven’t cooled down, we ris–"
"I said, Fire! So FIRE THE WEAPON!!"
He pressed down on his orders, and the soldiers were forced to comply.
Bracing through the burning heat to reload the cannon and fire at the army of beasts.
"Keep firing until I say otherwise"
Josh gave a final order, looking coldly upon the rabid beasts who spared not a single glance at their fallen race mbers, walking over corpses without any care.
’Beasts shall always be beasts!’
His eyes narrowed in contempt, looking down at the sea that was being cut down by the cannons.
With each consecutive strike, a chunk of beasts was cut down, and without the long wait to cool down the cannons, a gap was put between the beast army and the do.
It was going to be covered once the cannons stopped firing anyway, but it offered a small sense of relief to the other soldiers on the wall, making them feel less like they were about to choke.
’What trick are they pulling now?’
Anxiety tugged at Josh’s heart, his head flying into the sky in trepidation, but fortunately, it wasn’t what he had been expecting.
A result that still left him feeling wary.
The beasts had stopped all of a sudden, none of them approaching the do.
Instead, they stood in place, behind the blood-splattered grounds between them and the do, snarling nacingly.
The bloodlust and urge to kill could be perceived clearly from their distance and their loud roars and violent stomps, which made the walls and ground of the base tremble.
The riles never ceased firing for a single mont, the bright flashes moving like shining arrows towards the beast horde.
’Why aren’t they moving?’
Holland asked himself the sa question with sweat trickling down his forehead as he continued to fire shots at the army, exhausting mag after mag.
Amongst all the chaos on the wall, the faint coolness of a breeze brushed past
Josh was the first to feel it with his superior senses. The soldiers below just felt a shiver run down their spines
Almost instantly, instructor Angy arrived at the wall, looking forward with an equally grave face.
"Why are you here?"
"You really think you could handle that alone?"
Angy frowned, feeling two new presences descend onto the battlefield below.
Two beasts, unlike the other rabid ones behind them. Their eyes glistening with the kind of light that belonged to Intelligent beings, yet from their bodies ca waves upon waves of thick bloodlust.
Josh was annoyed at Angy’s presence, but he could feel it.
They both did
Those two beasts were strong. Just as strong as them.
If not stronger
