Luke nodded ambiguously and asked, "Is the drug trial supervisor, Kem Smith, at the company?"
"Yes, he's been in contact with the drug testers these past couple of days, asking about their health conditions, reminding them of precautions to prevent another tragedy like Rochelle Horn's."
"Okay, I'd like to talk to him again."
Soon, Luke t Kem Smith in the conference room.
Luke and Kem Smith were not eting for the first ti; during their last eting, Luke had asked him about the deceased Rochelle Horn and further inquired about the night of the arson incident. Luke always felt that the other party was hiding sothing, which is one reason he decided to talk to him today.
Kem Smith seed a bit exhausted and took a big gulp of coffee. "Captain Lee, what can I do for you?"
"I heard from Fred Krar that you've been in touch with the drug testers these days. How are they doing?"
"They're all good; no significant adverse reactions have been found so far.
When do you think the drug will be available in the market?"
Fred Krar sighed, "It's hard to say. All the experintal data for the new antihypertensive drug were destroyed in the fire, and a lot needs to be redone; a large amount of funding and manpower will be required.
Moreover, Rochelle Horn's death is sowhat related to the new antihypertensive drug...
It's unlikely to hit the market anyti soon."
Luke took out a photo of Walda Becker. "Have you ever seen him?"
Kem Smith pursed his lips and picked up the photo to look at it, frowning slightly. "I don't know him."
Luke repeated, "Have you seen him?"
"No, I haven't." Kem Smith handed the photo back to Luke.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure."
Luke noticed signs of lying on his face.
This was interesting. Regarding the arson incident, it was the second ti he lied.
He should have seen Walda Becker, but they probably weren't familiar.
So, when Luke first asked if he had seen Walda Becker, he said he didn't know him, but he should have seen him before.
Luke pushed the photo over again. "I suggest you take a closer look."
"Why?"
"Because he has seen you."
Kem Smith shrugged. "Maybe, I have a bit of face blindness; even if I've seen soone on the street, I might not rember."
Luke said, "The person in the photo isn't just anyone; he's one of the suspects in the arson incident.
So I suggest you think carefully.
Did you see him or anyone else the night of the arson?
Don't lie."
Kem Smith stared at Luke, "Can I call a lawyer?"
Luke smiled, "Of course, I've heard your pharmaceutical company's lawyers are quite capable.
I'm curious, are they more concerned about the company's interests or the employees' interests?"
"I have my own lawyer."
"Suit yourself." Luke stood up as if to leave. "Looks like I'll need to talk with Fred Krar.
Help him reintroduce his dedicated employee.
Maybe he'll even give you a promotion, who knows?"
"Captain Lee, please don't leave.
I won't need a lawyer; we can have a good talk."
"What do you want to talk about?"
"Can our conversation be confidential?"
"Of course." Luke sat back down.
"I...did see two suspicious people on the night of July 11th. One is the person in your photo, and the other is a researcher from our company..." Kem Smith took a deep breath, hesitant to continue.
"What's the na of the researcher?"
"Lydia Kuni."
"Describe the situation at the ti?"
"That night, I couldn't sleep, so I was walking in the yard. When I reached near the west side of the building, I saw the side door open and two people ca out, one was the person in the photo, and the other was Lydia Kuni.
Since it was quite dark, they probably didn't see .
I was wondering why Lydia Kuni was coming out of the building in the middle of the night, and then I saw firelight in the building, I realized that the building might be on fire."
"Where did they flee to, what mode of transportation did they use?"
"I don't know; when I saw the building was on fire, I was focused on putting out the fire and didn't have ti to look for Lydia Kuni."
"What ti was it then?"
"A little past eleven."
"Specific ti?"
"Around eleven-twenty."
Luke noted down the ti. "Since you saw Lydia Kuni, why didn't you ntion it in our last conversation?"
"She's an excellent woman who has put in a lot of effort to develop the new drug. I've seen it firsthand; the new antihypertensive drug is also her labor of love.
Although I saw her exit the building...
I just felt she couldn't have done such a thing.
I initially intended to ask her personally, but I've been unable to reach her."
"Do you have a close relationship with Lydia Kuni; do you know her well?"
"Yes, we dated before; we broke up about three months ago. Because I know her so well, I feel she couldn't have done this; perhaps there was so misunderstanding.
If I had told you then, it would have negatively impacted Lydia Kuni.
I wanted to verify everything before speaking, but I've been unable to reach her...
Honestly, even if you hadn't co today, I might have voluntarily explained the situation.
