"Breath...heavy breathing"
In the gloomy earth cave, several human figures were crawling through the narrow tunnels, each of their breathing heavy and rapid. Regardless of gender, old or young, they were all covered in bloodstains, with unspeakably filthy things clinging to them.
They seed to have lost the courage to speak, rely relying on their instinct to survive, following a limping young boy at the front.
McGraw was their "temporary leader."
If the folks from sser Police Station were here, they couldn’t believe that the clever, endearing boy could be in such a sorry state.
Ever since McGraw took over Tang Qi’s role as the Police Station Consultant, with the ans Tang Qi left him, and taking those Secret dicines, he had gained considerable Extraordinary Power. Coupled with his sharp observational skills, honed from years of scuffling in the streets, he could potentially match up to Tang Qi, to so extent.
After all, wherever Tang Qi served as a consultant or polymath, he was effectively cheating.
McGraw, on the other hand, had solved many Mysterious Events in cooperation with Gideon and others. Only those beyond his capabilities would be reported to the Ancient Castle Bureau for High-level Extraordinary Agents to take over.
In the darkness, McCarthy crawled forward while using the faint heat from the "Sun Badge" on his chest to report his current situation back to Tang Qi.
"In recent tis, there have been continuous disappearances of vagrants, prostitutes, and so travelers in sser City and surrounding areas."
"Because these people are solitary and due to their professions, by the ti the police station and partner organizations realized sothing was amiss, the number of missing had already climbed to a hundred or even more."
"Gideon and I both believe that such a large operation couldn’t be managed by a single person or a few working together—there must be at least one dium-sized organization hiding in the shadows."
"Quickly we set a trap and captured a trio, two of whom committed suicide, and the third was caught by using a Curios. But since the person was immune to so Truth Potion, we had to use mory Reading Curios to pry open his cranium."
...
"The Holy Guidance Sect? They worship an Exotic Realm Evil God nad ’Gafaro.’ They believe the Lord of Light is dead, and the world needs a new faith, represented by Gafaro, the New God embodying Universal Love and Light. Their duty is to unite the chosen companions and guide the lost people into the embrace of the Divine."
"All the people captured by the sect are thrown into a trial called ’Blood Cave Road.’ Those who survive the trial can beco a mber of the sect."
"So you deliberately got caught in order to participate in the trial, and now you are leading several survivors and continuing to fight for survival?"
Tang Qi pinched the "Sun Badge," his eyebrows slightly furrowed.
It seems he didn’t expect that, after only a short ti away from sser City, such a Cult Organization would suddenly erge.
Based on McCarthy’s description, the so-called "New God" worshiped by the "Holy Guidance Sect" should just be a bloodthirsty Evil God with no particularly strong power; otherwise, they wouldn’t let their Believers adopt such a sly and cumberso thod of developnt.
"Capturing people with poor physical fitness for so kind of cruel Trial, filtering out usable Believers... Either the Trial is affected by so unknown factor, or it proves that the sect doesn’t possess Curios or witchcraft that can corrupt or brainwash a large number of Humans."
"And, choosing a remote and chaotic small city like sser City also indicates the temporary weakness of the sect’s power, not daring to enter major cities like Secret Phoenix City."
"Furthermore, the so-called ’Blood Cave Road’ Trial has few traces of Transcendence..."
The details of the Trial reported by McCarthy continued to erge in Tang Qi’s mind.
McCarthy, once a "beggar," naturally found it very easy to play the role of a vagrant. Within days, he successfully deceived the organization and was taken away with over a dozen others from the filthy streets.
Afterward, they, along with dozens of others captured from other cities, were thrown together into a pitch-dark earth cave.
No food or clean water was distributed.
They were simply let loose to run; only those who crawled out from the other end of the cave could survive.
At once, the sect released a kind of "Bloodthirsty Monster," humanoid in shape but eyeless, with exceedingly keen noses. They would capture every Human in the cave and treat them as "Food."
The number of monsters, no more than twenty in total, consud over half of the trial participants in a very short amount of ti.
The remaining people scattered and fled within the earth cave.
McGraw utilized a Curio, concealing all Extraordinary Powers, rely demonstrating agile physical quality and considerable intelligence.
Leading several individuals, they fought with the monsters and successfully killed several of the so-called "Bloodthirsters".
However, this process was also nearly depleting their strength.
Lacking food and water, ordinary humans cannot stay active for long.
And since they were unsure whether the flesh of the Bloodthirsters was contaminated or poisonous, they dared not consu it.
"Sir, according to the information we pried out of the cult mber’s head earlier, by passing through this dark, narrow passage, we can enter the final stage they call ’Satiety’. Once through, we can officially beco mbers of the cult."
Inside the dark passage, McGraw, panting, reported the information to Tang Qi at the other end of the Badge.
"Satiety?"
Tang Qi, upon hearing the term, chewed on it for a mont, seemingly guessed sothing, his expression froze, and he had no appetite for what was once a delicious breakfast.
It was at this ti, through the "Sun Badge," Tang Qi sensed that McGraw had led five people out of that narrow passage.
Apart from McGraw, the five surviving individuals consisted of three won and two n.
The three females, from their revealing clothing and heavily worn makeup, seed to have the profession of prostitutes.
The two adult males, physically intact but with dirty, outdated clothes, were likely professional beggars.
"McGraw, what do we do next—"
"Ugh—Ugh ugh"
No sooner had they crawled out of the passage and began to inquire of the temporary leader, the youth known as "McGraw", which way they should flee next, than a strong, warm, unimaginable scent abruptly invaded their nostrils.
Despite not having eaten since entering the earth cave.
They still had food in their stomach from a few days prior, which they now vomited out completely.
Still unable to stop, the sour bile was also expelled.
As their sense of sll gradually beca numb, and they finally mustered the courage to look towards the indescribable "Source of the odor," including McGraw, they all fell into a daze.
What they saw in front of them was a "small hill".
It was piled up, made of hundreds, maybe thousands of mutilated human bodies, the intense sunlight shone through the gap above the cave, but this couldn’t stop the corpses from "fernting", the rotten flesh turning into viscous Corpse Fluid, slowly trickling down from the top, forming "small streams".
Around the Corpse Mountain, there were passages resembling "dog holes", nine in total.
At this ti, besides McGraw’s group of six, seven others had crawled out from different passages.
And then at the sa ti, they vomited, plunged into terror.
Next, they were either panicked, or outright petrified, and so shouted hysterically.
"Sir, I think I understand what the phrase ’only after satiety does one beco family’ ans."
Inside the badge, McGraw’s words ca through.
