Boom.
Another tremor rumbled through the Dungeon walls as dust trickled from the cracked ceiling above. Ethan narrowed his eyes, gripping the hilt of his sword tightly.
"That was the third one," he muttered.
Beside him, Lili clutched her crossbow, eyes alert and scanning the darkened corridor of the lower floors.
"Ethan," she said, voice low, "that didn’t feel like a normal collapse. That... that felt like sothing moving."
He nodded slowly. "I know."
They had only planned to descend a few levels today—to warm up after a few days of rest, maybe pick up so more loot. But as they reached the fifteenth floor, the tremors started.
Small at first. Barely noticeable.
But now?
The Dungeon was shaking.
The stone walls on this floor were slick with moisture, the air growing thicker and more stifling the deeper they went. Their footsteps echoed against the dungeon floor as Ethan took the lead, Lili following closely behind, ever-watchful.
"Let’s stay sharp," he said. "We’ll investigate, but we’re not picking a fight if it’s sothing serious. Got it?"
"Yes, Ethan-sama."
He glanced back, raising an eyebrow. "Still with the ’-sama’? You’ve been with long enough to just call Ethan, you know."
Lili blushed slightly but didn’t respond. Her grip on her crossbow only tightened.
They moved through the labyrinthine corridors in silence, passing several dead monsters—freshly slain. Not by them.
"Soone’s been through here," Ethan said, kneeling beside a dead War Shadow. It had been cleaved in two with a single stroke. The edges were still steaming, the cut precise. Too precise.
"Not just soone," Lili whispered. "A strong adventurer."
Another tremor shook the ground, and this ti, a low groan echoed through the stone like sothing massive was dragging itself across the floor.
Ethan stood quickly, eyes narrowing. "That ca from the southern corridor."
"Is it smart to go toward it?" Lili asked, already knowing the answer.
"No," Ethan said with a small smile. "But we’re not here to be smart."
They made their way south, the corridor widening as they went. Soon, the narrow walls gave way to a vast chamber, half-collapsed and choked with debris. Strange glowing fungi lined the broken pillars, casting an eerie blue glow over the stone.
And at the center of the chamber—
A crater.
The ground was torn as if sothing massive had erupted upward from beneath.
Lili stopped short. "What the hell happened here..."
Ethan didn’t answer. He stepped forward, crouching by the edge of the crater. The stone around the hole had been lted—no, disintegrated. Not a weapon. Not magic. Sothing... primal.
A gust of cold wind rushed from the hole, carrying with it a sll that made the hairs on his neck rise.
"Sothing ca out," he said grimly.
Lili stepped beside him, hesitant. "Or it’s still down there."
Another tremor shook the floor—and then the sound.
Skrrrk.
A long, dragging hiss echoed from deep within the crater, reverberating through the walls and vibrating in their bones.
Ethan stood and took a step back.
"Alright. We’re not going down there."
"But—"
"I said not now," he said firmly. "We report this to the Guild. This is way above our level."
Lili hesitated, then nodded. "Right. Sorry."
Ethan turned back toward the corridor. "Let’s get—"
Crack!
A chunk of the ceiling collapsed just a few feet from them. Dust and debris filled the air.
Then it erged.
A pair of glowing amber eyes peered from within the pit. They weren’t like monster eyes. No bloodlust. No wild fury.
They were calm.
Observant.
Watching.
Ethan locked eyes with the creature for one frozen mont. His heart pounded.
"Go," he said quietly. "Lili—run."
She didn’t argue. They turned and sprinted, the tremors behind them intensifying as whatever was beneath began to rise. A low growl—not of rage, but of warning—followed them.
Sothing had awakened.
They didn’t stop running until they reached the upper floors again. Breathless, covered in dust and sweat, they leaned against the cool dungeon walls.
Ethan looked back once more, but there was no pursuit.
Not yet.
"What the hell was that?" Lili asked between gasps.
"I don’t know," Ethan said. "But it wasn’t normal. That thing—it was looking at us. Judging us."
"Like it was waiting," Lili whispered.
Ethan nodded slowly. "Exactly."
As they made their way out of the Dungeon, Ethan’s mind raced.
He had seen many monsters. Fought beasts that towered over him. Survived a mutant Minotaur that should’ve killed him.
But this?
This wasn’t just another floor boss or monster.
This was sothing ancient.
Sothing sentient.
Sothing that didn’t belong on the fifteenth floor.
He clenched his fists, the cold sweat drying on his skin.
They would need to prepare.
Because next ti, they wouldn’t be so lucky.
