Having just finished the first volu, I wanted to gather my thoughts before diving into the next. Overall, I’m genuinely liking the story. It isn't an average run-of-the-mill xianxia story recycling the sa tired plotlines. Life as a Rogue Cultivator has its own voice and vibe that simply cannot be replicated by everyone.

One of the most striking things about it is the lack of a major, overarching plot. This might sound like a criticism, but it fits seamlessly with the novel's slice-of-life concept. Liu Xiaolou doesn't have so grand, world-altering ambition. His imdiate goal is usually just to open his next acupoint. Because of this, the story feels less like a directed narrative and more like we're simply living alongside him.

Don't get wrong, the author is clearly building sothing in the background. We get intriguing threads like the mystery of the sect leader tokens and the history of Liu Xiaolou's own sect, that suggest a bigger picture is being assembled. But the slow pace ans we can't yet see how these pieces will connect. The story arcs themselves can feel a bit chaotic, with the MC bouncing from one situation to another, but the author is a master at making these transitions feel organic and never forced. It all contributes to the novel's distinct, andering charm.

This brings to the second thing I love: the execution of classic xianxia tropes. From the start, it's clear the author isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. We have a handso MC, absent parents, a mysterious sect... all the usual ingredients. But the way they're handled is so refreshingly well-done. It feels familiar yet completely new.

The sa goes for the MC's skill set. The story is clearly setting Liu Xiaolou up to be multi-talented, dabbling in Formations, the Sword, Yin-Yang, Scents, and beast taming (bees)... What makes it believable is the slow, gradual way he explores these paths. It never feels like he's instantly an expert; he grows into his abilities, which makes his progression satisfying to follow.

I'm completely invested in this world. I want to know where all these plot points and characters are headed. I want to see Big White cultivate! I'm even interested in so characters who've only appeared once, like the woman Liu Xiaolou t in the cave during the rain, the woman from the brothel during the Fangle Peak formation refinent, or the pipa player at the Green Serenity Courtyard.... there are so many plot points.

That said, it’s not without its flaws. For instant, I didn't like the MC's relationship with Su Su. It felt rushed and ca out of nowhere. I can sowhat understand Liu Xiaolou's perspective. After three years of disrespect in a hostile environnt, her kindness would stand out. But from her side, her feelings for him seed to appear without any real build-up, making that particular dynamic feel forced.

Nevertheless, these are minor bumps in what has been a thoroughly enjoyable read. I'm really looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

... UPDATE:

I’m adding a new series to the mix. This one is considered an all-ti great in the web novel world, and it's easily in my personal top five. In fact, it's actually how I discovered Rogue Cultivator in the first place. They share a similar vibe, but this one is told from the perspective of a sect leader. It’s really really good. If you’re enjoying Rogue Cultivator, you’re gonna love Sect Leader.

Lol, now i’m juggling three novel translations: one from a demonic cultivator’s POV, one from a rogue cultivator’s POV, and one from a sect leader’s POV.
