702: 702 702: 702 “One…two…five.”
When Bram made out the number of approaching planes, he was slightly stunned.
Three U-77 light fighters, three S-15 small air transporters.
A total of six planes.
Bram lifted his binoculars higher, gazing into the deeper darkness of the night sky.
There was nothing else there.
Only these six planes were approaching.
Normally, a Federation air force squadron is composed of about five planes.
This was exactly the size of an air force squadron.
“Captain, it’s too dark to see which organization this flight squad belongs to.
The city governnt has already denied all flights permission to land tonight.
Could it be so flight squad that’s gone astray nearby?
Should we signal them to leave?”
The officer standing next to Bram also held a pair of binoculars, tentatively asking.
Generally, a flight squad with only a few planes would be carrying out so sort of short-distance reconnaissance or transport mission, not far from the main force.
“Have the scouts we planted on the trade routes and safe air corridors not sent any alarms back?”
Bram asked.
“No,”
the officer pondered for a mont, then shook his head, “Their reports today all indicate that everything is normal.
The radar readings are also normal, this flight squad must be coated with so kind of stealth paint.”
As he spoke, he was slowly coming to a realization, looking at Bram, “Captain, is there sothing wrong with this squad?”
“They didn’t follow the usual trade routes or explored safe air corridors; they must have crossed the unknown wilderness directly to arrive here, that’s how they could avoid our deployed scouts.”
Bram set down his binoculars.
“But they’re just a few planes, and where did they co from?
Whether it’s from any nearby city, even if they received the signal, even if they made the decision imdiately, they still couldn’t get here in ti.”
The officer found this hard to believe.
“Exactly, just a few planes,”
Bram smiled, looking out into the night sky, “Dangerous exotic beasts fill the high skies, so a small squad like this could only travel low; precisely because there are so few planes and the squad is small, they could quickly pass through the complex low-altitude areas without leaving too much of a trace, and get here in the shortest ti.”
He paused for a mont, “The ti of their arrival is just right.”
At this ti, the rcenaries of Kajet rcenary Corps were still engaged in fierce combat with the City Defense Army atop the high walls, and had not yet fully secured the walls.
“But how dare these few planes co to attack us?”
The adjutant was still incredulous, “Even if we haven’t gained control over the City Defense Army, this small squad can’t even break through the rcenary troops guarding outside, let alone breach the high walls?”
“Are you sure we still have many troops down there?”
Bram looked down at the area below the high walls, where near the city gate, the lights of camp remained bright and continuous.
These were the camps left by Kajet rcenary Corps outside the city, their lights stretching along the city walls like a vast blanket of light, dense and spectacular to behold.
And at that mont, the officer standing beside Bram suddenly got it.
From below, the camps seed nurous, but most were empty, just lit up with lights to mimic a substantial force.
The majority of those originally stationed at the West Gate had entered the city, and most of the remaining few had been sent to support the North, East, or even South Gates.
Currently, very few rcenaries were actually outside the West Gate; and because this was where the headquarters of the City Defense Army was located, with the bulk of Darn’s loyal forces, the resistance here turned out to be the strongest among all four gates, more than initially anticipated.
Now, this gate was the weakest of the four gates controlled by Kajet rcenary Corps.
But in theory, those attackers shouldn’t have known any of this.
The personal communication devices of these rcenaries had been confiscated, all troop movents were confidential.
How could they know that the rcenary Corps, in anticipation of Nolanka rcenary Corps, had redeployed most of their forces to the North and East Gates?
Unless…
The officer finally realized sothing and looked towards Bram, “You’re saying…”
Unless, this squad is from the Nolanka rcenary Corps that participated in the ‘drills’.
“Feign to the east but attack in the west, lure the tiger out of the mountains,”
Bram picked up the binoculars again, gazing at the approaching flight squad, his fingers unnaturally stroking the surface of the binoculars, “But I hadn’t expected them to have the courage to send a squad across the wilderness.”
A surprise attack, to strike when least expected—that is the essence of a ‘surprise attack’.
Previously, they had speculated that even a surprise attack would target the South Gate; they hadn’t anticipated that the enemy’s goal was the West Gate, guarded by a B-level powerhouse.
He paused, his tone flat, and chuckled, “Our opponents are not only ticulous but also bold and daring.”
Imdiately after, he turned his head to his adjutant, “Send a light signal, inform the troops below to activate all chas and anti-aircraft equipnt, and at all costs, stop that squad outside the city gates,
“Previously, Kroter did everything possible to prevent us from bringing chas into the city.
Now that they are left outside, it’s ti to put them to use.”
“Yes!”
The officer beside him nodded imdiately.
He ran to the side, said sothing to a ssenger, and let him go off into the distance.
The Kajet rcenary Corps actually has an internal communication system with unlimited reach, but not only was the area within the high walls enveloped by that powerful communications jamming, but also above the high walls.
This was to prevent the City Defense Army from sending ssages inside or outside the city.
However, this signal jamming didn’t only affect the City Defense Army; it affected the Kajet rcenary Corps as well, with no communication devices able to function under such interference.
But the Kajet rcenary Corps had long since practiced fighting without signals, so under equally disadvantaged conditions, their organizational strength was far superior to that of the City Defense Army.
The sole operational communication system on the walls was the wired communication system spread throughout the high wall in this command center occupied by Bram—the very reason he had co here.
And as Bram’s orders ca down, a huge searchlight that had been temporarily suspended above the high wall began to flash rapidly.
In the night, flashing lights are an excellent ans of transmitting signals.
Specific codes are conveyed through the duration of the flashes, forming complex ssages.
Human beings have used this thod to transmit information for a very long ti.
With high-performance computers available, these codes do not require human morization and can be extrely complex, thus transmitting a greater volu of information.
Almost imdiately after the searchlight stopped flashing, the lights in the camp below began to flicker intensely, and faint sounds of huge machinery starting up could be heard.
And the officer had returned to Bram’s side.
“Have we gained control of the anti-air systems?”
Bram asked while still holding the binoculars.
“Only a small part,”
The officer shook his head, “The rest of the City Defense Army is putting up a fierce resistance, even so officers who have been on our payroll are siding with them.”
Like the troops led out by Darn.
Bram watched the flight squad getting closer and closer to the high wall.
The timing was perfect.
“Captain, with just a few aircraft, even if we control only part of the anti-air systems, we might not hit them from a distance, but at close range, at most they’ll advance to Jar City’s gates.
As long as they dare to try flying over the high wall, their only fate is to be shot down,”
The officer glanced at Bram’s profile, “And the city gates are very sturdy; they can’t possibly destroy the gates.
Especially with two sets of gates, as ti goes by, we’ll control more and more of the anti-air systems, and these aircraft will inevitably be shot down.”
The gates of Fortress Cities are double-layered.
Outside the main city gate, there’s a smaller Jar City, and outside Jar City, there’s another gate.
To enter the city, one must first pass through Jar City’s gate into Jar City, then through the main gate to finally enter the city itself.
“Is there a platoon guarding the city gates inside?”
Bram suddenly asked.
“Yes,”
the officer nodded in confusion.
“Signal them to increase their vigilance and send another squad down.”
Bram slowly lowered the binoculars in his hands.
What worried him was precisely the city gate.
“Yes!”
The officer gave his commander a puzzled look and quickly responded.
…
At that mont, beneath the high wall where Bram stood, not far from the West Gate, YiXiya leaned in a dark alley corner, watching the iron caltrops in front of the West Gate and the rcenaries patrolling behind them.
“One…
two…
three…
four…
twenty-five…
twenty-six,”
YiXiya glanced back at the burly man with a broadsword behind her, “Twenty-six n.
There should be a few more inside, more than thirty, possibly forty.”
“Around forty n, that should be a rcenary squad,” the burly man said in a hoarse voice, “They’re all carrying Gauss Rifles, surrounded by light armored vehicles.
It should be an elite squad, there’s a high chance of a Transcendent among them.
Given the importance of the city gate, there should be a D-level Transcendent or a chanized Body, not just one.”
“Mhm.”
YiXiya took another look.
The opposition was an elite squad of forty with D-level strength.
They were only two, one C-level and one D-level, and the C-level was wounded.
“Are you ready?”
YiXiya turned to look at the burly man again.
This man seed to be Kroter’s confidant, and very loyal to Kroter.
“The Mayor’s family is still inside the city,”
Instead of answering YiXiya, the burly man spoke in a softened voice, “He told earlier that if anything happened to him, I should give you the key.
He had only one request, that his wife and children survive.”
“Mhm.”
YiXiya nodded again.
Kroter actually trusted Sienzi; otherwise, he wouldn’t have entrusted his confidant with the key to his family’s safety.
Or rather, surrounded by various traitors from the Kajet group, Sienzi was the only enemy he could trust.
YiXiya gripped the black card key stained with blood.
This wasn’t the first ti the burly man ntioned Kroter’s last wish.
ntioning it again wasn’t because he feared YiXiya would forget, but to reassure himself by repeating it.
After all, in this assault, they were likely to die.
Currently, there was only a small team of opponents, but they were entirely surrounded by Kajet rcenary Corps.
Once cornered, facing continually reinforcing troops, they were destined to die.
Both individuals had prepared to face death.
“Hmm?”
As various thoughts flitted through her mind, YiXiya suddenly frowned; she focused on those guarding the city gate, “It seems like they’re adding sentries, reinforcing the guard?”
She looked at her wristband.
It was about that ti.
“We need to move imdiately.”
The burly man clenched his broadsword tighter.
He took a deep breath.
YiXiya also took a deep breath.
Although they had ntally rehearsed countless tis, facing death was not easy, especially knowing they were about to embark on a potentially fatal mission.
She rembered the night she went to confront old Mr.
Deres.
According to Sienzi, when the old man left that day, he was calm, as if he was just going to an ordinary banquet.
No one knew the terror of Deres, the chief of the Pollution Cleaning Departnt who had controlled it for over a decade, better than YiXiya—like a Divine Being, his oppressive aura could sap everyone’s courage to resist.
Even among the B-level, Deres was like a towering mountain.
Did the old man have the sa hesitation she did when he went to face such a formidable enemy?
YiXiya pulled out a Gauss Pistol from her waist and a rocket launcher from behind her.
If the old man hadn’t dealt with Deres, their current situation would an certain death.
She chambered the pistol.
The old man might have been afraid too, but fear solves nothing.
For so reason, the nas Sienzi had shown her started flashing through YiXiya’s mind.
Ande…
Nell…
Pete…
Jess…
K…
And Christos, who survived countless assassinations.
It was because of countless such people, who faced death head-on, that the spark of civilization continued to burn in this twisted, insane darkness.
Death is the most stunning firework; it should be set off at a mont when it can illuminate the most people.
YiXiya didn’t know what the final outco would be, whether they could succeed, but she knew she had to act.
Whirr—
A dazzling purple radiance suddenly lit up the sky.
At the tops of the towering skyscrapers of Kajet Group’s factories, suddenly a series of purple, fla-like illusions began to shine, turning these terrifying buildings into blazing torches,
The stars that shrouded the night sky dimd at that mont, and purple lines, twisted and entwined, covered the sky, dyeing the entire world a distorted purple.
It was as if a boisterous waltz was echoing in the silence of the darkness.
People looked up in confusion, gazing at the hill-like contours reflected in the sky.
And YiXiya, standing in front of West Gate, bowed her head, lifting the rocket launcher from the ground with one hand, and eyed the muscular man beside her, “I’ll count to 3,”
She paused,
“1”
“2”
“3”
—
“Charge!!!”
Ard with assault rifles and rocket launchers, Sienzi and a few agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation suddenly burst out from the alley.
The abrupt gunfire almost simultaneously erupted.
The rcenary guards at the entrance of the building barely had ti to react before they were struck by the sweeping bullets.
But soon, the defenders in front of the building quickly regrouped, with several of them morphing into huge polluted monsters, facing Sienzi’s charge.
Sienzi raised the rocket launcher in his hand, and with one shot, blasted the monster at the front into pieces.
He looked up at the building in front of him, a seventy-plus-story high-rise, once abandoned and now refurbished.
The forr headquarters of the Evolution Acolytes.
“Stick to the original plan, cover , I’m going up,” Sienzi roared, without hesitation, tossing the rocket launcher to the FBI agent behind him, and then charged into the building.
This point, where the building was located, was one of the three points in the city where they could build an altar.
