701: Chapter 701: Surprise Attack (Large Chapter for Monthly Votes) 701: Chapter 701: Surprise Attack (Large Chapter for Monthly Votes) The flowing night breeze swept through the gaps between the high-rises, and as the tail of the wind passed by, one by one, the bright lights also turned to darkness.

The entire city, like a set of light bulbs gradually going out, quickly dimd, fully rging into the pitch-black night sky.

The cold skyscrapers stood like silhouettes, pressed against the gaps between the stars.

At that mont, everyone understood sothing.

There was a power outage.

The so-called ‘terrorists’ ntioned in the notice had seized the power company.

Saint Joen City was facing its first and only citywide blackout since its founding.

First the internet was cut off, then the power went out.

One by one, dim ergency lights illuminated behind little windows.

The people of the Federation lived in an environnt of internet and electric devices, just like fish living in water.

And at that mont, everyone was ruthlessly thrown ‘ashore’.

The faint ergency lights dispelled the night in small spaces, as people panicked, looking around.

Their smart wristbands could no longer contact anyone, and even old-fashioned chanical wireless radios emitted nothing but static.

The invisible connections between people were ‘cut off’, and even though they were only separated by walls a few dozen centiters thick, the residents in the high-rises felt as though they were isolated in the vast wilderness.

The instant the power and network were lost, the foundation that upheld the grand edifice of civilization seed to suddenly vanish.

“Notice from the city governnt, please all citizens stay inside the buildings you are in, the City Defense Army and Kajet rcenary Corps are currently in battle with Evil God Believers terrorists.

Everyone, please remain silent, any citizen on the street may be shot as an Evil God Believer,”

The cloak of night enveloped everything, with only so ergency powered streetlights that weren’t damaged still shone with dim light.

A construction loudspeaker vehicle, with a massive horn, passed under a streetlight that seed like it could go out at any mont, its deafening sound echoing in everyone’s ears.

Next to this loudspeaker vehicle, under the faint glow of the streetlight, were two off-road vehicles that seed to be escorting it.

Soldiers wearing Kajet Group rcenary uniforms sat inside, holding assault rifles, wearing noise-canceling earmuffs and infrared night vision devices, warily watching in different directions.

“Warning, anyone entering the street may be considered an Evil God Believer and shot,”

The giant horn kept repeating the warning.

Behind the horn, in one of the two vehicles, a rcenary with a mole on his face seed to have spotted sothing.

He imdiately raised his gun, aiming at a corner of the street.

There, a little girl with cute cartoon hair clips, who had pushed open the door of a cake shop, was half out of the shop, picking up a small glass bead that had fallen to the ground.

The rcenary slowly moved his crosshairs onto the little girl.

His actions had no pause, his finger pressed on the trigger.

Just at that mont, it seed soone in the cake shop noticed the little girl, grabbing her from behind and yanking her back into the room.

Bang—

The bullet struck the steps in front of the cake shop door.

The rcenary looked up with so regret, as if lanting that he had wasted too much ti aiming.

Then he slowly shifted his rifle, aiming the muzzle at the cake shop’s glass door, or more precisely, at the little girl who was pulled inside.

The glass door was very transparent and did little to block the view.

He could vaguely see, a young woman in an apron holding the little girl in her arms, looking outside nervously.

Just as he was preparing to pull the trigger once again.

Thump—

His teammate gently tapped his shoulder.

He turned around, took off his earmuffs, and looked at his teammate.

“An unregistered off-road vehicle just went by, put away your gun, the Captain wants us to check it out,”

Taking advantage of the gap when the loudspeaker wasn’t speaking, his teammate shouted next to him.

While speaking, the rcenary took a look at the cake shop; the mother and daughter behind the door had already vanished into the depths of the shop.

He sighed with so regret, put away his gun, “Alright!”

And tucked back into the vehicle.

Their off-road vehicle slowly accelerated, passing the loudspeaker vehicle and driving forward.

“Mommy, isn’t Daddy also in the City Defense Army?

Why would they shoot at ?”

Inside the cake shop, the little girl huddled in her mother’s embrace, peeking out from afar.

Lit by the ergency hanging lamp that had been turned on indoors, her gaze passed through the glass door, glancing at the spot outside hit by the bullet.

The area was dark as if a small crater had been blasted out.

If her mother had reacted just a little later, that bullet might have shattered her body.

She still didn’t fully understand the aning of death, but the fear ingrained in human instinct made her tremble uncontrollably.

“That wasn’t the City Defense Army,”

The mother held her daughter, picked up the ergency hanging lamp beside them, and quickly retreated deeper into the cake shop.

Her smart wristband lit up, showing a dialing interface; the most recently dialed number was ‘Husband’.

The result of the call was, “not connected.”

In the distance, faint but intense gunfire could be heard.

······

Two blocks east from the street where the cake shop was located, the scene was entirely different.

Loud gunshots echoed in every corner of the street.

Two light armored vehicles, each mounted with a huge electromagnetic cannon, slowly drove onto the street.

Their cannons were pointed in the sa direction—towards the Saint Joen City headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

At this mont, the first floor of the headquarters had been completely sealed off by solid steel shutters, and so agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation were hiding behind the shutters, shooting through gaps.

The ones they were shooting at were Kajet Group rcenaries, lined up by the stairs to the building, taking cover behind off-road vehicles.

“Director Scait, we have received approval from city hall, suspecting that there are believers of the Evil God within the Federal Bureau of Investigation; hence we have co for an investigation,”

a man who appeared to be a rcenary officer shouted from behind a vehicle, using a gaphone, “Stop your futile resistance.

The more you resist, the more it proves that you are colluding with the Evil God.”

“Bullshit!”

An angry voice ca from behind the shutter, “Damn it, I’ve never heard of any rcenary corps investigating the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

If city hall wants to investigate us, bring out Ains’s authorization and the docunts from the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation first.”

A roar from behind the shutters followed, and there was a brief silence outside.

Then, insults continued from inside, “In my opinion, you bastards are the ones fucking colluding with the Evil God.”

“We want to hear from Director Scait inside,”

this ti, the rcenary officer finally spoke up, “Shouldn’t this matter be decided by your director?”

It went quiet inside the building, then a calm voice was heard, “What Deputy Director Vince said is exactly what I wish to say.

Bring the dispatch order from Ains and headquarters.

This act of forced entry is a violation of federal law.

Attacking any central federal institution is an attack on the entire Federation.

You are on a path that is bound to fail.”

The air around stilled for a mont after these words were spoken.

Only the gunfire between the two parties continued non-stop.

The rcenary officer standing outside glanced at a man in a Pollution Cleaning Departnt uniform, “Was that Director Scait’s voice?”

“Yes,” the man pondered for a mont and nodded.

“If he is still in there, then this will be easy.”

The officer smiled and lifted his hand, gesturing gently.

The two armored vehicles on the street began to adjust their cannons’ aim.

······

anwhile, inside the building, a burly man turned off his high-definition recorder and spat, “Damn, they wouldn’t know it’s the recording and not the director speaking if I hadn’t played it.

These tasteless mongrels.”

“Deputy Director,”

an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who had been firing through the shot holes, turned back to the burly man, “What do we do next?”

“How could those idiots at city hall let these bastards bring those things in?”

The burly man, or Deputy Director Vince, peered through the shot holes at the two light armored vehicles outside, adjusting their cannons, “A basketball on their necks would roll faster than their brains.”

He picked up the recorder in his hand, looked at the cannons that were being aid, and yelled, “Brothers, fall back!

Our mission is to cover the director’s escape.

Don’t throw away your lives.

Once we’re upstairs, it’s our turf.

Send these bastards off to et their damn Evil God father.”

The surrounding Federal Bureau of Investigation agents quickly retracted their weapons and retreated upstairs in flight.

Boom boom——

The next second, two massive cannon shells hit the tal shutters, easily tearing them apart and exploding in the first-floor lobby of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“Charge!”

The sound of the rcenary Corps charging echoed from outside the door.

······

At this mont, behind the building next to the Federal Bureau of Investigation office,

Director Scait, holding a tal briefcase in one hand and clutching the bent railing with the other, looked down.

He was about seven or eight ters above the ground; after hesitating briefly, he let go of his grip.

Bang——

His body fell rapidly, hitting the ground, then on impact, he crouched and rolled forward several tis to absorb the force.

He shook his sore right hand, glanced at the dust all over himself, and sighed.

He had seen an old man appear to jump down from the tenth floor of the Evolution Acolyte’s branch office, using stationary bars to buffer the fall, and finally land unhard, so he wanted to try it himself.

But clearly, even as a powerful C-level, there were so things he shouldn’t have attempted.

He almost got stuck on the wall.

Nevertheless, in the end, he was fortunate to have descended the building successfully.

Whew——

Just as he relaxed his hand, the sound of the SUV rolling over the pavent ca from ahead.

“So soon?”

Scait was startled and looked up towards the front.

Then he was taken aback.

The vehicle approaching from the front was not the SUV he had expected, but one full of five rcenaries, belonging to Kajet’s rcenary Corps.

And as he noticed them, they noticed him as well.

He could clearly feel the excitent in the rcenaries’ eyes.

The rcenary sitting in the back seat raised his gun, aiming at Scait.

Bang—

At that mont, another SUV burst from a side path and ramd sideways into the SUV filled with rcenaries.

The rcenaries on board had no ti to react before their SUV was sent flying, and several who were not seated securely were thrown out.

However, these rcenaries quickly regained their composure, raising their guns towards the newcor SUV.

They were originally there to pursue this very SUV.

The next second, the SUV made a sharp turn, rushing in front of Scait.

Scait accordingly leaped into the passenger seat, then swiftly pulled a pistol from his embrace and aid at the rcenaries behind him, whose muzzles were still pointed this way but had not fully recovered from the collision.

Bang—

A shot rang out, directly hitting a rcenary in the head.

The rcenary fell backward.

The rcenaries in the car montarily panicked.

The next second, the SUV carrying Scait sharply turned and drove toward the other SUV behind them.

Bang bang—

Scait fired two more shots.

Two more rcenaries fell, including the SUV’s driver.

The entire SUV instantly lost control, and Scait, seizing the opportunity, raised his pistol, firing another accurate shot.

There had been a total of five people on the rcenaries’ SUV; now only one was left.

It was a rcenary with a mole on his face; he pulled up the body of a comrade to shield himself and fired at Scait’s SUV.

Bang—

The movents of the SUV were not entirely predictable, and though his shot was anticipatory, it went awry, only shattering the rear window of the SUV.

The driver was skillful!

In that instant, the rcenary realized sothing and pointed his gun at the driving cabin of the SUV.

Then he suddenly discovered that there seed to be nothing on the driver’s seat.

Was this vehicle self-driving?

However, as the vehicle drew closer, he saw that the driving seat was not empty; a little girl was sitting there, her hands on the steering wheel.

Due to the girl’s height, at first glance, it appeared as if there was no one in the driver’s seat.

He instinctively aid his gun at the little girl.

Wait a second?

A little girl drove and dodged my bullet?

He was slightly taken aback.

Bang—

And in that mont of distraction, a gunshot rang out, removing his doubts and his life as well.

Scait, sitting in the passenger seat, put down his pistol and sighed in relief.

Though he could have easily dealt with these guys up close, the speed wouldn’t be much faster than shooting,

Since it was a long-range situation, it was best to respect the principles of long-range engagent

Transcendents could also trust in science.

After all, a gun is a good thing.

Moreover, he was quite good with firearms.

The out-of-control SUV crashed into a wall nearby, and Scait, having relaxed, turned to the little girl sitting in the driver’s seat, “Was it you who drove the car over here?”

“Not really,”

The little girl let go of the steering wheel, her cute face turned towards Scait, “Offline automatic driving system.”

“So you…”

Director Scait was taken aback.

Then he instantly realized what was happening and shook his head with a smile.

The girl’s just now actions were intended for the rcenary across from her.

A crafty little thing.

“Who are you?”

He looked at the little girl and asked.

“Granddaughter!” The girl nodded, “My na is Jia Xi, you’re Uncle Scait.

Grandpa told about you, I know it’s you.”

“Jia Xi,”

Director Scait glanced at the little girl and asked with so confusion, “Where are we headed next?”

“To the Pollution Cleaning Departnt building.”

Jia Xi promptly replied.

“Aren’t we going to the place we talked about earlier?”

Director Scait was taken aback again.

“Uncle Sienzi has already taken the recon squad you provided there,”

Jia Xi spoke calmly, “and we, we’re going to the Pollution Cleaning Departnt.”

As she said this, she looked at Director Scait, “Uncle, did you bring that thing?”

“Brought it!”

Director Scait patted the briefcase in his embrace.

At the sa ti, he realized that the logic of the little girl beside him was far superior to that of other children her age.

“Uncle, I need you to plug this in.”

Jia Xi unfolded a chip from the palm of her hand.

“What is this?”

Director Scait took the chip.

“A remote automatic control system.

Grandpa said we need it in case of network and power outages,”

Jia Xi explained.

“I see.”

Director Scait looked at the chip in his hand.

In fact, in addition to network and power outages, the city was filled with sothing else—wireless signal interference.

This dense interference nearly rendered all wireless communication devices disfunctional.

They were under the effect of an extrely powerful jamming device.

Under such interference, even walkie-talkies couldn’t be used, and many remote-controlled devices were completely incapacitated.

In such circumstances, they indeed needed an automatic control system like this.

However, such strong interference would presumably not only affect one side.

West Gate·Atop the High Wall

The cold wind scraped everyone’s cheeks as Bram looked up at the silent night sky that seed to rge with everything.

Standing atop the high wall, one could gaze out at the vast wilderness on one side and overlook the entire city on the other.

This was the boundary between humanity and the wild.

Scattered gunfire continued to erupt around them.

That was Kajet’s rcenary Corps striving to seize control of the high wall.

A City Defense Army unit that had lost its leader and was riddled with bribed officers could not stand against Kajet’s rcenary Corps.

Everything was going smoothly, everything was proceeding according to plan.

It seed it was already ti to pop the champagne.

“Captain, look over there!

In the wilderness, sothing’s coming this way!”

Just then, a rcenary Officer suddenly shouted.

“Hmm?”

Bram, slightly startled, picked up the binoculars hanging around his neck and peered into the distance.

In the pitch-black wilderness, a ‘team’ composed of several fighter and transport aircraft was crossing beneath the starlight at an incredibly high speed, heading towards the gate at their feet.
