Chapter 489: Chapter 489: Urgency
Chapter 489 – Urgency
“How devious of him.” Kaden chuckled faintly, looking at The Tales of The Fool.
He was only on the second page after the introduction, the page where the story actually began.
Raven had started in a strange yet interesting way. He had written in the first person, beginning from what he considered the true start of his poetic journey — the moment he awakened both his Origin and his Blessing of Space.
It was fascinating to read his thoughts as a child, as if he was genuinely that ten-year-old living through those events, while at the same time hearing the mentary of the old, experienced man he had bee running alongside it.
But that wasn’t why Kaden was calling his grandfather devious.
“You cannot turn to the next page?” Blanche said, mildly disappointed. She had been very much interested in the story.
“Aye.” Kaden nodded, closing the book softly and storing it in his space ring. “Every time I try to flip the page, I feel an entire sky settling on my chest.”
He shook his head wryly. “But I instinctively know I can turn it once I surpass the limit of my stats. Grandfather really dared to use his Space power to stop us from reading the whole thing in one sitting.”
“As expected of him.” Reditha said, smiling, drawing on the five days she had spent with Raven too.
Kaden might have been the centrepiece of that time. But she had e to love the old man just like her master had.
Kaden nodded, acknowledging her words. He lifted his head and looked around — the yellow pond, the unfinished sculpture, the carving tools scattered below it.
He very much wanted to try carving. But there were things he needed to sort through first.
He willed his System, seeking a deeper understanding of everything he had received.
He clicked his tongue shortly after.
[Heart of Howling Dark Daemon: This is a Heart only Royalty of the Infinite Space Empire can obtain. You have obtained it. A day shall e when you must prove yourself worthy of it beating inside your chest.]
That was only the first one, and Kaden already felt like cursing, his eyes narrowing in exasperation. He hated anything cryptic. He had enough to worry about to put aside brain cells to decode a strange heart’s significance.
So he didn’t.
‘I have e to understand that I will know the things I am meant to know when the time for knowing them arrives.’
Whether he was saying that to soothe himself or whether he truly believed it, even Kaden couldn’t say.
He sighed and moved on to the next one.
[Seed of Metheus: A fire of forethought. A fire of afterthought. This fire can make an opponent experience all its past damage simultaneously, or all its future damage simultaneously — as long as you can bear the weight of your opponent’s past and future.
Be careful. A weak Heart and a weak Will may shatter, and you will be consumed by the fire.]
A sharp pause settled inside him, then quiet, hidden astonishment.
‘My fire… has bee this?’
He thought about it carefully. The fire was dangerously powerful, he could feel that already. But the cost was so steep he was almost unwilling to accept it.
Not because his Will or Heart was weak. But because he was aware by now that every enemy ahead of him would carry a past or future — or both — far too heavy to bear without consequence.
‘What does it even mean to bear the weight of a past and future?’ He held his chin, pensively. ‘Does it mean I relive their experiences, or something else entirely?’
The description was too vague to press further. Still, even without full knowledge, he understood one thing clearly: this fire required careful consideration before use.
‘I’m satisfied with it regardless.’ A faint smile edged his lips as he turned the carving knife over in his fingers. ‘This is a kind of ultimate technique. One I can use repeatedly as long as my Will holds.’
He currently had over a hundred stat points available.
‘I will—!’
His thoughts stopped. Before he even turned his body, Blanche and Reditha both snapped their attention toward a new presence.
It was a short yellow man, scratching relentlessly at his beard.
Historian paused mid-step, looking at the two creatures on Kaden’s shoulders with a flash of hidden surprise and awe, then refocused on the young man himself.
Kaden was still playing with the carving knife, facing the unfinished sculpture, not quite paying attention.
Karim didn’t mind. He spoke regardless, breaking the silence.
“He is gone, isn’t he?”
A sigh. “Yes.”
“Was it a peaceful death?” Karim asked, then immediately regretted the question.
“As peaceful as a death by curse can be.” Kaden’s voice was dry, empty of amusement.
Karim took a couple of breaths before asking the question that actually mattered.
“I am sorry for your loss. But I need to know, what will you do now, wise boy?” He asked. “The master must have explained some things about the situation. About Vainglory.”
“Not enough.” Kaden shook his head. “But enough for one question.”
Still without turning his body…
“Is there a way to enter the Tower without Pandora knowing? There must be, right? Grandfather said he chained Vainglory, but he never said he fought Pandora to do it. He must have had a specific way inside.”
Historian smiled. “Yes.” He nodded. “There is indeed a way to enter the Tower without her awareness. But I suggest you use it soon, it will not last much longer after the master’s death.”
At that, Kaden paused and finally turned his head, looking at Historian over his shoulder. “What do you mean?”
“Space.” He answered, gesturing toward the yellow pond beside Kaden. “The master created a whole separate dimension linking the inside of the Tower to the depths of that pond.”
Kaden’s eyes lit with surprise. And strangely, now that Historian had said it, he began to feel an unstable aura radiating from the yellow pond.
“Now that he is gone,” Historian continued, “it will certainly not hold much longer.”
“I understand.” Kaden said, rising from the ground, sensing the urgency. “But first, I need to see Pandora and stop by the Church for something important.”
“Alright. But,” Historian’s face tightened. “What will you do with Vainglory once you are inside, wise boy?”
“Well, Historian.” He smiled, without humour. “That’s exactly what I want to find out.”
