Capítulo 1927: Chapter 1927: Clues
Early in the morning, Xu Huo walked out from the Supervision Departnt.
The sky outside was bright, but it was as if it wasn’t, not only because the overly complex buildings blocked the sky, but also because severe environntal pollution made the sky gloomy and depressing, with rain and mist.
However, the morning was quieter than the evening, with normal people moving about.
Xu Huo sheltered under the Supervision Departnt’s umbrella, ate a bowl of noodles by the roadside, and walked into a shop marked “Housing Rentals.”
The woman guarding the shop wore heavy makeup. The makeup quality seed poor; there were blotches of different shades on her face, and powder fell off when rubbed. Her eyes were dark as she yawned incessantly, indifferent to incoming custors, tossing a worn booklet at him.
“Crossed out houses are rented out, find one yourself, prices are listed.”
The Shadow Wall separating the Eastern and Western Districts runs north-south and generally appears as a straight line. There’s a river beside it, and the safe residential area Lin Guang ntioned is along this river; the closer to the river, the higher the property prices, while walking in the opposite direction decreases the prices and gradually worsens the environnt.
Xu Huo eventually rented a house for one thousand a month near the Shadow Wall, after bargaining. The simplistic housing structure diagram in the booklet suggested the house was not good.
The landlord, carrying a bunch of keys, rode an old modified flying craft to show him the house.
The Western District housing area is terraced, with multiple layers above and below. The Supervision Departnt where Xu Huo reports is in the middle; deeper areas exist further down. However, the deeper structure shortens as it nears the Shadow Wall, flattening out near the rented house. At least from the rental house, looking down is only a single layer of buildings, and this area is quite far from the river.
The landlord opened the door, pointing to the old, not-so-clean house, “It has a separate bathroom, toilet, windows for cooking, and you can see the Shadow Wall, saving you from turning on lights in the evening.”
The landlord’s words aren’t entirely a joke. The so-called Shadow Wall is actually a high-tech wall mimicking surrounding environnts. During the day, the wall is active; from the riverbank, only grassland and river similar to the riverside landscape are visible. At night, the effect shuts off, the wall turns transparent, and lights from the opposite side can reflect over, allowing views of the Eastern District city. The lights illuminating half the sky last night were from the Eastern District, making it reasonable to not need lights near the river.
Anyway, the colorful lights in the Western District an nothing special.
Xu Huo feigned difficulty, turned around the house, and asked, “Is there anything better?”
The landlord sized him up and down, “There is, depending on whether you can afford it.”
Xu Huo finally settled on a two-thousand set rental house, approximately five hundred ters forward, at least cleaner.
Many nearby rented through the landlord, who collected rent during visits; Xu Huo thus t several neighboring households.
Much like most of the Western District, the residents appeared malnourished, but their attire was sowhat better; so family children were relatively clean.
They were wary of new residents; only two older people indirectly inquired about Xu Huo’s background and work; others were reluctant to speak to him, even actively avoiding eye contact.
The Western District rent was monthly; Xu Huo paid for a month, got the keys, and went out to purchase daily essentials.
He was caught by Bald Head and his trio when he only had a wallet, not luggage – a glaring flaw, but no one in the Supervision Departnt cared or questioned his past, like where he trained, making him seem just like a transient.
Supervision Departnt’s high mortality rate made such old-tirs’ attitudes quite normal.
Nevertheless, Xu Huo planned to replenish a “lost suitcase” in a couple of days.
He bought daily necessities after price comparison and t new neighbors upstairs returning to the rental house. They had invited two girls, chatting cheerfully as they walked downstairs, winking at him as they passed by, “Co find us downstairs tonight for fun.”
Xu Huo avoided them, walking upstairs without a glance, prompting laughter.
Back at his house, closing the door, he tidied up while observing surroundings. Earlier shopping let him survey the area, aside from occasional flying crafts; it lacked surveillance and interference devices. So, he expanded his Spiritual World, monitoring everyone in the nearby streets.
In just ten minutes, he identified five players.
Two used props to conceal their residence; they were currently handling their props, likely Outer Zone players.
The other three barely differed from ordinary people in body evolution shown, but spatial rays emit from their outer clothing, likely protective suits altering body information. Among them, one slept, and two worked like regular street dwellers.
For safety, Xu Huo didn’t look further but focused on a nearby entertainnt venue.
This place was quiet during the day, but soone happened to deliver items. The surface showed vegetables and fruits, but beneath tal panels was a wounded person transferred three streets away, eting a dark-skinned delivery worker at a crossroads.
Injured were sent directly to the kitchen, hidden behind the freezer by a chef.
A few minutes later, a shabby doctor arrived for a quick treatnt before leaving.
Only then did the chef inquire about the injury.
Unfortunately, this person wasn’t from the Resistance Army; the situation roughly was this: he was undercover in another organization, discovered while investigating a black market channel, narrowly escaped death, returning with news that his rival had sourced a regular supplier to soon sell them outdated hot weapons.
This involved Dark Power struggles, but such sellers with sizable weapon supply had complex identities, so Xu Huo followed the chef to et the shop owner. The owner, familiar with opponents, was sure the Eastern District people were selling these weapons and planned to offer greater sincerity, to personally contact Eastern District people, to succeed in this clash.
The shop owner contacted a middleman to set up a eting, inviting the manager of the “Freezing Plant” for talks.
