Capítulo 1926: Chapter 1926: Non-Overlapping Identities and Tasks
One day later, more than thirty hours after the murder occurred, the case was directly archived and no longer pursued. Under such circumstances, it’s difficult for ordinary people to catch the murderer unless they happen to be near the scene.
Of course, this isn’t a big deal for players. However, considering identity restrictions, they might be subject to an investigation by the Supervision Departnt afterward. This ans that even if they catch soone, it’s unlikely to be considered a successful resolution of the case, and once their identity is exposed, they might face pursuit from Eastern District players, making it very difficult to complete the mission with the chosen identity.
Xu Huo searched for related instances of this zone beneath the Dinsion, discovering that the identity choices and tasks players face upon entering instance locations varied. In other words, the ga randomly assigns identities based on where players disembark, such as a justice-driven Inspector, an undercover Eastern District person, or a writer. The first two identities have a certain inclination, but the third seems a bit random. Even though it starts with “freedom of speech”, this identity can entirely be replaced by others of similar nature, such as “reporter”, “screenwriter”, or “director”, all roles that can express certain values and are easily accepted by the public.
Since players can have so many roles, it’s normal for the corresponding missions to differ. With different directions of mission completion, there’s less reference available.
Furthermore, Zone 035 has long been integrated into the ga. Even if Western District people, driven by survival issues, don’t care much about players and instances, Eastern District people won’t stand idly by. Therefore, the Supervision Departnt is likely to be more sensitive to players. Xu Huo, being a new person, is naturally an important object of observation both logically and emotionally.
It’s also possible that many mbers of the Supervision Departnt are just coasting. They care nothing about the conflict between the Eastern District and the Resistance Army, or the comings and goings of players, but it’s uncertain whether there are no players from the Eastern District, the Resistance Army, or other players who have cleared levels within the Supervision Departnt.
Xu Huo is now a new target, and there might even be new Inspectors signing up soon.
He once again went over the places where those recently killed Inspectors frequented, then closed the Collection of Information Terminal and took a nap in his chair.
However, the Supervision Departnt building isn’t soundproof. The people loitering outside all night occasionally make all sorts of loud noises, or soone drunk creates a commotion, smashing things, or a sudden piercing scream… All of this can be heard in the Supervision Departnt building clearly. Let alone players with excellent hearing, even ordinary people wouldn’t be able to sleep.
After being disturbed a few tis, Xu Huo rubbed his face and went downstairs.
The lighting inside the Supervision Departnt building wasn’t as gloomy as outside on the street, but with so many lights outside, various colored lights were projected, making the corridor’s colors a chaotic ss and visually extrely uncomfortable.
He had just reached the third-floor corridor when a shadow flashed by around the corner. He imdiately shouted, “Who’s there!”
Upon hearing his voice, the shadow ran even faster. Xu Huo quickly jumped down the stairs, but as soon as he reached the second floor, the door of the stairway was suddenly kicked open, and he was thrown against the door panel, only managing to protect his head with his arms, but ended up rolling down the stairs due to unstable footing, hitting the corner.
The person wasn’t targeting him. Before he could stand up, they leaped down to the first floor.
Xu Huo hurriedly chased down the stairs, shouting down to Lin Guang.
Movent was happening on the first floor as well, Lin Guang and Bald Head worked together to hold the person down. It wasn’t soone who broke in from outside, but soone from the group Bald Head and his people had caught earlier who were there to watch the spectacle.
Bald Head used a detector to search the other’s body and found the lockpicking tool. He slapped the man’s head repeatedly, “You’re quite capable, opened the door and didn’t run, and still had the ti to steal sothing?”
While beating him, he kicked the items that fell out of the man’s pockets, getting angrier, “You have quite the eye, still stealing sothing valuable. Do you know if you managed to take this, how many reports we would have to write to apply for new materials? It’s hard enough for
already!”
The thief squatted on the ground with his head in his arms, enduring the beating without resisting or begging for rcy.
“Are you alright?” Lin Guang looked at Xu Huo.
Xu Huo rubbed his shoulder, “Got a hit on my back, no big deal.”
The Big Man, smoking on the side, chuckled, “You’re lucky today, took a couple hits and didn’t lose your life. Here in the Western District, most people hit in the back like that tend to end up dead.”
Xu Huo’s expression wasn’t good as he glanced at the one with a bloody nose, frowning without speaking.
Lin Guang quickly said, “Brother Hao, stop hitting, if you beat him to death, we’ll have to deal with the corpse. Late at night, you and Brother Liao should rest first, leave him to , I won’t let him escape again.”
Those who ca back from a late-night snack were only Bald Head Hao and the Big Man Liao who had pinned down Xu Huo earlier. Brother Hao said unhappily, “If Zhang Shun wasn’t worried you all couldn’t handle it, I wouldn’t bother coming back. Keep an eye on him, don’t let any mistakes happen again. Also, if soone cos to bail him out tomorrow, don’t agree to anything less than thirty thousand. I an it!”
Lin Guang nodded repeatedly, saying he’d send them so tea right away, pushing the two into a nearby room.
Turning back, he heaved a sigh of relief, saying to the man lying on the ground, “Couldn’t you just behave? Now look, does anyone at ho have the money to bail you out?”
The beaten man grinned indifferently, “Everyone’s long gone, nobody to bail
out, sorry for hindering your windfall.”
Lin Guang helplessly escorted him to the interrogation room and locked him up.
“What happens if no one bails him out?” Xu Huo asked once the door was closed.
“Starve him a few days and throw him out,” Lin Guang said. “The Supervision Departnt doesn’t have spare provisions for them.”
“I wonder what he was thinking, why not just leave once he got out.” Xu Huo mumbled.
“Maybe he wanted to make so money,” Lin Guang explained. “Many instrunts in the Supervision Departnt can fetch a high price on the black market, as you saw, we’re understaffed. Afterwards, we’re likely not to pursue further.”
“But if he were to steal sothing else outside, it’s a different story. People have their ways, and thieves have theirs. Stealing sothing worthless is one thing, but if caught with sothing valuable, the consequences are atrocious.”
“Be careful when you patrol, and don’t ddle in others’ affairs.”
Xu Huo thanked him and then asked, “Are night shifts like this common?”
“Not too common, you don’t run into sothing every ti,” Lin Guang thought for a mont. “Staying in the Supervision Departnt building is still safe, don’t overthink.”
The two of them, with eyes half-closed, stayed on guard until the next morning when so other Inspectors arrived for their shift, including the captain of Lin Guang’s team. Upon hearing that Xu Huo had stayed up all night and still hadn’t found a place to live, the captain gave him a day off to find accommodation.
