~Odette~

Ambrose was struggling. Every ti he opened his eyes, he saw those eyes haunting his dreams. He saw his mother’s hand hit the floor in front of him. The sll of copper assaulted his nostrils.

He was constantly being thrown back into that night. I was doing what I could to bring him back, soothe his broken heart and heal his fractured mind.

But even with her feeding from his pain, I couldn’t seem to take it all way. And that cracked sothing in . That there was so pain I couldn’t help.

All this power, and I was utterly useless for the one person in this world whose feeling matter this much to .

Over the next few days, the cleanup had begun instantly after our arrival.

Witches moving lumber and stone with their magic.

Vampires were reinforcing and rebuilding the boundary wall.

Shifters digging a mote around the wall. Filling it with magic thorned vines and brush.

Together the vampires, shifters and witches set traps in the forest. ant to not only kill, but to slow them down and disarm.

We would be as prepared as we could be. We weren’t taking any risks and doing whatever we can to fortify the pack house and the pack grounds. dics zones were being established and prepped for use. Things were moving quickly. We had no way of knowing when they’d break through the seal on the gate and make his move.

The war council was running over different battle strategies and previous combat stories.

I was training ceaselessly, day in and day out struggling to have full control over my Divine Fyre. I was trying really hard to remain optimistic, but it was looking futile and failing was sothing I wasn’t used too.

Artemasia was running drills after drills, switching them up, forcing to challenge myself.

Every day after training I felt the ache in my bones and the cries in my muscles. But she never lost faith in and I needed that, now more than ever.

Raven was training hard, trying her best to hide from her pain, pretend the mories don’t scare her. Didn’t break her. But I could see it. I didn’t need my powers or a bond to tell . Her movents and distracted focus told everything.

This land, it felt like walking on poison to her. Fighting in air that slls like poison, fighting fears that felt like reality. But she felt like she was failing miserably.

She’d been avoiding since we arrived. I noticed and after training one day, I searched for her, knowing she was hiding and could probably use a friend.

I had been making myself more familiar with the territory. The pack grounds were larger than they looked.

When I found Raven, she was beating a dummy senseless with daggers. Her hair was stringy and frazzled, beads of sweat ford on her forehead, she swiped her hand across it. She didn’t even noticed approach.

"You look like you could use an ass beating and I could use a challenge; soone I don’t have to hold back on or use crazy magic with."

Raven jumped.

"What? You beat my ass?" A sinister grin tugged at her cheeks. She needed this. The familiar taunting banter, the rivalry, the dance. By now that’s what fighting was between them.

A dance competition. More than a duel of vengeance.

Raven lurched forward, wasting no ti after receiving the invitation.

But I moved faster than Raven could blink. One second, I was in front of her, the next I was gone. Raven whipped her head around frantically; she wasn’t panicking, but she was trying to locate quickly.

I grinned.

And without warning I collided with Raven sending her flying backward. Before Raven could move again, I was in front of her and hit her in the stomach hard. I wasn’t holding back but I wasn’t aiming to damage, just hurt a little. I knew all too well that sotis physical pain was the only freedom from ntal agony. That unless you bled you couldn’t let the walls down.

Raven grabbed wrapped her arms around my head and slamming her forehead into mine with incredible force.

I sure as hell didn’t expect that move.

I stumbled back, and Raven did a round house kick sending skidding back.

I needed ti to get my bearings. Using air magic, I sent dust particles flying in the air, drastically reducing the clarity in Raven’s view, I shook my head reorienting myself before the dust settled and Raven found again.

This ti, I was smoother, I stopped thinking and just followed my bodies lead and it was the right move. I dodged every attempt Raven tried, tiring Raven out before striking her in the cheek. Raven launched herself, she tried to wrestle to the ground, but I flipped Raven over my shoulder and on to the dusty floor.

"Ow, I yield, I yield. That hurt like a mother fucker." Raven whined out. A single tear ford in the corner of her left eye. She wiped it away quickly.

"Sorry, I actually didn’t an so slam you so hard, but that’s your own fault, I used your kinetic force and redirected it, so it made my flip easier and well, you ca at hard, so you hit the ground harder than I ant." I rubbed the back of my head and halfhearted chuckled. Slightly embarrassed I hadn’t controlled my strength the way I wanted too.

"That was fun, I guess I did need an ass beating."

"We can do this anyti you want, as long as it doesn’t interfere with Artemasia’s training. She’s got working like a slave. I’m dying." I complained. Dramatically.

"I bet, whatever she’s been doing, it’s working. Your sharper, faster, stronger, it’s impressive and inspiring." Raven’s jaw dropped as fast as mine when she realized what she said. "If you tell anyone I said that I’ll deny it and who do you think they’ll believe?"

I laughed hard, bending over, holding my stomach. "You, because you’d never say nice things like that."

"Ya damn right." Raven laughed alongside .

This was sothing we both needed more than we realized. Sothing normal. Everything was about to change, and this would be one of our last days of just living like normal people without impending doom breathing down our necks.
