The carriage halted in front of a hospital nad “Frankensta”.
Chen Lun stepped down from the carriage.
By that ti, it was getting late, approaching dusk.
After he entered the main building of the hospital, he showed his identification in the lobby and underwent so necessary checks.
It was unclear whether it was due to his high Charm Attributes or simply because of his appearance, but Chen Lun gained the favor of a young nurse, which easily got him the bed number information he wanted.
He gently tipped his hat and bowed in thanks, leaving the young nurse thoroughly smitten; afterward, he turned and headed straight upstairs.
‘Ward 404…’
Chen Lun walked through the empty and silent hallway.
‘This number is a bit unlucky…’
He mumbled to himself.
The Silver Staff rhythmically tapped the ground, emitting a dull thumping sound.
Passing by the third floor, he suddenly heard a strange whisper. The voice ca from an independent balcony to the side of the third floor, commonly used for drying sheets and clothing.
Chen Lun stopped in his tracks and listened intently.
The breeze brushed by, and even with his keen hearing, he could only catch a man’s low and muffled words from the wind:
“…Lord, please… save us…, You are… the formless…, all diseases… plague!”
Chen Lun furrowed his brows.
It sounded like a prayer to so deity, but so of the words did not match any of the orthodox gods.
In particular, the word “plague” caught Chen Lun’s attention.
‘Who exactly is praying, and to what existence…?’
He thought for a mont and decided to investigate.
He pushed open the door to the third-floor corridor, hurried to the balcony, only to find it empty, with rows of bed sheets flapping in the wind.
As if the whispers he had heard were just an illusion.
Chen Lun planted his staff on the ground and perford a simple Divination to seek out the direction of the person who had been praying in secret. However, the staff’s handle just spun in place without pointing in any definite direction, indicating the person was still in the hospital and had not left.
‘The clue is not clear, leading to a vague objective, so the Divination result is inaccurate…?’
Chen Lun pondered for a mont, decided to first visit Mrs. Caroline. He would investigate the matter of the person praying later.
Leaving the independent balcony, he noticed that the third floor had many patients, and the hallway was full of busy doctors and nurses, along with a crowd of wailing patients.
‘More and more people are getting infected with the plague…’
Chen Lun saw so coughing and collapsed patients sitting on the hallway benches, and faint moaning could be heard from the wards.
He shook his head and returned to the corridor.
Then he went up to the fourth floor and found Ward 404.
After knocking on the door politely, he turned the handle and pushed it open.
The ward was small, with only two beds. One was currently vacant, and the other bed held a frail old man lying on his side, with an old woman sitting beside the bed and a dog squatting at her feet.
“Oh, Little Jack!”
Mrs. Caroline turned her head around with a look of surprise. Babu also looked towards Chen Lun, wagging its tail.
The old woman hurriedly stood up and ca forward.
“What brings you here?”
“I heard there was an accident at No. 7 Denton Street, so I ca to see… Mrs. Caroline, are you alright?”
Chen Lun took off his hat and embraced his forr landlady.
“I appreciate your concern, Little Jack, I’m fine… It’s just Mr. Tao Te, the doctor said he might never wake up.”
Mrs. Caroline forced a smile.
“However, that’s also a stroke of luck among misfortunes… I thought he had been killed by those thugs at the ti, but in fact, he only fainted from blood loss… The poor old fellow, he ended up like this trying to save .”
She shook her head.
Chen Lun gave Mrs. Caroline a reassuring smile and then walked straight to the bedside.
A frail old man with a pale face was lying on the bed, breathing faintly. His head and torso were wrapped in bandages, and he looked to be seriously injured.

“Mrs. Caroline, why don’t you move to the Inner City District? The Outer City District is not very peaceful right now.”

Mrs. Caroline shook her head.
“I’ve been used to living at No. 7 Denton Street for so many years, and now with Mr. Tao Te unconscious, I can’t just abandon him.”
