The main difference between male and female voices is the sound of the voice. Male voices are heavy with throat sound, while female voices are produced with the pharyngeal cavity, making it clear which voice cos from a woman and which from a man.

Although this is the biggest difference between male and female voices, there are many more nuances that often go unnoticed. n and won use a breathiness in their speech that is characteristic of their gender. Take Sissy for instance, why do they sound offensive even though they are won? It’s because they speak in a flirtatious manner, but when it cos out in a man’s voice, it just causes goosebumps all over people who are sexually straight. The reason for this discomfort is the breathy quality of a woman’s speech in their tone.

Just now, his friend spoke in that very manner, but it was done so naturally that it took a mont for him to realize sothing was off in the way it sounded.

"Ma De, that’s just twisted."

He muttered a curse under his breath and continued walking toward the high part of the corpse wall. It was disconcerting for him to hear a deep-voiced man suddenly using the breathy tones of a woman’s speech. He had grown used to the other man’s rough and hearty voice, and the change left him feeling quite uncomfortable, as if a delicate girl were standing before him, only to look up and see a big man with a beard. This was sothing no one could easily stomach!

Trying not to dwell on this issue, he silently climbed onto the platform atop the corpse wall, but the sound of his comrade’s voice kept echoing in his head. Before long, he began to repeat it subconsciously, and then started to think that this was how girls must speak.

"Go to hell, Ma De, I must be cursed!"

Realizing his strangeness, he cursed angrily, and casually sat at the table, fiddling with his weapon to distract himself from his bizarre thoughts.

The night was endless. After so ti had passed, the long-awaited mont finally arrived. He glanced at his watch, it was five fifty—in ten minutes, it would be six. Six o’clock was the ti for changing shifts; the soldiers on night watch on the corpse wall would finally be able to return to their dorms for a good sleep.

In those last ten minutes, the ti always seed to pass painfully slow.

Today was no exception. This year’s winter was especially cold with the sun rising late and setting early. Normally at this ti, it was as dark outside as it would be at two or three in the morning. But today, a dazzling golden line appeared on the horizon—it was dawn, heralding that winter would soon be over.

Noise erupted from beneath the corpse wall. He first thought it was their officer calling them to gather for the shift change, but upon listening closely, he found that wasn’t the case. The soldiers below and the other squad preparing for the shift change seed to be busy with sothing.

"Quick, the stretcher!"

"It’s coming, lift him up."

"Dammit, now you co, when the man’s already dead!"

"What happened?"

"What the hell is this? He was fine yesterday, how could he just suddenly die?"

"Stop talking, we’re all confused here."

"I saw soone lying there long ago, I thought he was just too tired and fell asleep. But when I checked, he was already dead."

"What’s his na, what’s his number?"

"Number: 2-20779, na is ng Huxiu, cause of death unknown—it seems he died suddenly."

"There are no wounds on the body, no internal injuries, how could he suddenly die?"

"Could it have been sudden death?"

"You’re full of crap!"

"I know this guy; he’s a New Human. How could he suddenly die like that?"

He caught fragnts of several conversations and seed to hear the na of his comrade from the previous day. He hurried downstairs to inquire about the situation, only to discover that it was indeed the sa person from yesterday, who had died mysteriously.

"What happened? How did he die?" As soon as he got there, he grabbed a dic dressed in a white coat and asked.

"Who are you?"

"My na is Yu Xingxing, I’m friends with ng Huxiu. My ID number is 2-17812."

"Yu Xingxing? You rood with him?"

"Yes."

"Okay then, let ask you, did he suffer from any illnesses? Like, say, heart disease or anything like that?"

"I’m not sure about that, but he was a Level 2 New Human. Even with an illness, isn’t sudden death unlikely?"

"Then we are also at a loss here. We have examined the deceased and found no hidden ailnts. There are no surface injuries, nor is there any damage to the internal organs. We need to conduct further examinations."

"Well, alright then."

After exchanging a few words with the dical soldier, he watched as the other and another dic carried away the body of his comrade on a stretcher. As he watched their retreating figures, a shadow seed to envelop his heart.

Recalling the tone of his speech from yesterday, that feeling, it was as though he was a completely different person. And today, he was dead, without any warning or sign of sudden death! Moreover, from the snippets of conversation, he overheard from above, it seed that this comrade who shared his dormitory hadn’t just passed away but had been dead for quite so ti before being discovered.

All of this was shrouded in mystery. The sudden and incomprehensible death of a once familiar comrade made him feel as if the world, which had been so well-known, was suddenly filled with the unknown, sending chills down his spine!

It was as if the fear that had slowly subsided as he adapted to the apocalyptic environnt since its initial onset was suddenly rising in his heart again.

The unknown is always the most frightening.

Thinking back to ng Huxiu’s sudden abnormal behavior yesterday and his assurances that nothing was wrong, as well as the odd tone of the words that ca from his mouth, it felt as if a stranger was standing in front of him. It made him wonder if the ng Huxiu from yesterday wasn’t the ng Huxiu he knew at all, but soone – or sothing – else!

A chill ran through his body. With a nearby officer calling them to assemble, he quickly followed. He struck up a casual conversation with so companions who had been on guard duty elsewhere the previous day. Although his expression showed no sign of anything amiss, the shadow in his heart lingered.

It was like watching a particularly terrifying movie, unable to forget the ghastly appearance of the ghost within. It was imprinted deeply in his mind, coming to the forefront when eating, studying, or trying to sleep, making him feel as if the ghost was right beside him.

Soon, the entire squad of soldiers who had been on night duty had assembled, and the next squad had already taken over. They simply awaited the officer’s dismissal, which would bring the day to a close, yet his dorm would be one person fewer.

At the sa ti, he had made up his mind. As soon as he got back to the dormitory, he would imdiately talk to the dorm manager about changing rooms.
