Soone directly addressed Su Sigui, but she acted as if she hadn’t heard, seemingly closing off her senses and falling into a quiet state of deep contemplation.
Seeing this, the person who asked Su Sigui the question gave up, and everyone else started to conjure up wonderful speculations in their minds, but that’s beside the point.
Before long, the entire conference room beca noisy, but then quieted down again. However, not much ti passed before conversation intertwined once more, making the room raucous again. This cycle repeated several tis until the conference room finally settled into a prolonged silence. It was then that Su Sigui reopened her eyes, her world a kaleidoscope of colors, beautiful, leaving nothing uncolored, everything’s hue revealed. Through the grey walls, she could see the splendid sky outside, even more wonderful than the one from before the Apocalypse, but beneath that beauty lay a sense of oppression.
"Everyone, think it over carefully. The process of today’s eting at Cloud Gorge Base will be made public to everyone tomorrow. If any of you agree, our combined efforts will comnce from tomorrow. I’m not jesting, so everyone’s decision must be made with the utmost caution. If you agree, there will be no rewards. The only reward is the respect from everyone’s hearts."
"Now then, if you agree, please raise your hand to vote."
After Su Sigui spoke, she calmly looked at each face. Everyone glanced at each other. Then, half of the group from the City of Bright Moon raised their hands, followed by the majority of the foreign stronghouses, with the exception of the Indian people.
The fact that only half of the people from the City of Bright Moon raised their hands did not surprise Su Sigui. She had expected it; the people here are not philanthropists. If they don’t want to do it, she wouldn’t force them, of course, but there were so surprises for her, such as the three Level 8 Powerhouses from Goryeo who all raised their hands.
People from Goryeo have a relatively good living environnt in Cloud Gorge Base. As long as they can speak fluent Chinese, they are generally treated no different from Chinese people. Adding so local dialect makes it even more perfect. They bear no profound ethnic hatred towards Chinese people, so they get by rather well in Cloud Gorge Base without facing much ostracism.
The Japanese people, having established deep-seated enmity with Chinese people during World War II, are in constant danger in Cloud Gorge Base, living in dire straits. Their two Level 8 Powerhouses, although seemingly inactive, have been working hard for their compatriots. With nothing to lose, agreeing to this matter might change how the locals view them, which didn’t surprise Su Sigui.
As for the Black and White people, one group is despised due to innate inferior traits etched in their genes, and they are eager to urgently change how they’re perceived.
The other proudly claid to be of the most noble race before the Apocalypse, which sparked a strong desire to conquer among the people, leading to their current awkward situation. They too wish to regain their esteed stature. Likewise, they had no other choice.
Su Sigui might have guessed their decision a long ti ago. Even with losses, they didn’t have much to lose to begin with.
What really surprised her was that so of the Level 8 Powerhouses she didn’t expect to agree raised their hands, and a few she thought would agree remained silent, just observing everything around them.
All things considered, those who agreed weren’t many; only about one-sixth of all present. Su Sigui also noticed hesitation on the faces of so who had raised their hands.
"The result is sowhat unexpected," soone said. "I didn’t think there would be so many. This clearly doesn’t look like a walk in the park, but Mayor Su is right. What we envision will inevitably co to pass one day, and then everything we have will lose its aning. Therefore, I agree, to make an effort for our own kind. But let be clear, if anyone dares to stab in the back—not including outsiders—you all know my temper. I am not a good person; ss with , and it will be a fight to the death!"
Zhang Jingqi’s voice rang out again, and he, too, raised his hand. This action made Su Sigui regard him with newfound respect, though her face betrayed no emotion.
After Zhang Jingqi finished speaking, his gaze fell on a card beside Su Sigui and he inquired, "Mayor Su, I have made my stance clear. Now I have a question for you, and I ask you not to conceal the answer."
"Speak."
"Who is Nakama Hidehito?"
Su Sigui replied indifferently, "Soone who isn’t very significant, soone you don’t need to worry about. If you want to know about him, I can tell you."
Zhang Jingqi showed a skeptical look, intuition told him Su Sigui was hiding sothing, but it also felt like she was unwilling to elaborate. What exactly she was trying to convey by placing the card there was unclear.
"Alright, your answer will suffice for now," he said, pretending to be unconcerned, but in his mind, he firmly etched the na Nakama Hidehito.
The others in the room had varied expressions. Those who had raised their hands started to feel regret as ti passed, as if disagreent wouldn’t have led to any loss. But since Su Sigui had stated that the eting would be fully docunted, lowering their hands now could tarnish their reputation.
At this level, they were all deeply concerned about face and honor, and naturally, none wished to show any weakness. They could only suppress their bitter regret, contemplating how to casually brush it off later.
Su Sigui scanned the room and, after a short while, her voice filled the space again.
"Alright, I’m aware of everyone’s stance, and on behalf of all humanity, I thank you for your resolve. However, it’s still too early for gratitude; everything depends on our efforts. If there are regrets, even inaction is acceptable, but as the old adage ’every cause has its effect’ advises, your present regret may lead to much greater remorse in the future. I’ve said all I needed to say. With that, let’s adjourn today’s eting."
As Su Sigui concluded, the assemblage of powerhouses took turns looking at one another. Once the first person rose from their seat, the rest followed in succession, leaving the conference room.
anwhile, Su Sigui watched the departing figures in silence, her face devoid of emotion, making it impossible to guess her thoughts. This scene brought on a mixture of relief and subtle unease, particularly in those Level 8 New Humans who hadn’t raised their hands. They felt as though they had missed sothing important, their hearts empty, yet lacking the conviction to change their decision.
