Since she and Cheng An were not a couple, they stood out awkwardly during the romantic movie they were watching. Surrounded by snuggling and smooching couples, they felt out of place. Behind them, a couple was kissing so passionately that they were making little smooching sounds.
She kept glancing back, which seed to disturb the couple behind her. Irritated, the girl snapped at her, "What are you looking at? Don’t you have a man?"
Coming from a broken family and having been abandoned by her parents for being slow-witted, she was used to being the subject of derision. Victim of bullying in school because of poor grades, she took the girl’s remark in stride, even seeing it as sowhat warranted. She ekly apologized to the girl.
Following that, she quickly turned her attention back to the movie.
She thought that was the end of it, but Cheng An, who had been sitting stone-faced next to her, as if dozing off, suddenly opened his eyes. He turned around and asked the rude girl, "Who do you think is more handso, or your boyfriend?"
There was a sparkle of admiration in the girl’s eyes when she saw Cheng An. After a mont of shy hesitation, she replied, "You are."
Cheng An nodded approvingly, and then pointed to himself, saying, "I am her man..."
With these words, he grasped her by the back of the head and, in front of the couple behind them, sealed her lips with his.
It was her first kiss.
To be honest, she couldn’t recall how the kiss felt. She only knew she was dazed and her mind was blank.
It was only after he released her and told her that he kissed her to defuse the situation, that she was able to find her voice. Staring at his alluring yet cold face, she managed a stunned "thank you."
His reply, was curt, "I don’t accept verbal gratitude; follow after the movie."
And so, after the movie, she went with him for dinner. Assuming an air of importance, he told her that, in consideration of her birthday, he would reluctantly accept the restaurant’s gift of a birthday cake and longevity noodles.
Cheng An was feared by all in school, including her. So, under his intense gaze, she nervously finished an entire cake and a large bowl of noodles.
All Cheng An did that evening was to drink, and he drank so much he got drunk. Left with no choice, she helped him to a hotel room upstairs in the restaurant... and once she entered, she did not co out again.
She may have been naive, and not particularly bright, seeming even a bit slow at tis, but she knew what that night had signified. Shortly after starting high school, Cheng An started to take interest in her, ordering her around, making her copy his howork or do errands for him. After three years under his manipulation, she beca his "personal little servant", and was ultimately forced to beco his "personal sleep companion?
The thought terrified her, so she bore with the humiliation. And after high school, she dropped out and took a job as a server. Following that, she handed out flyers, took bit parts, set up roadside stalls, until she finally beca a famous actress known throughout the region... she never saw him again.
