After dinner, the table was a ss of empty plates, sauce stains, crumpled napkins, and three suspiciously empty wine bottles that Luo Yanyu insisted were "absolutely necessary for digestion."
Su ilin and Jin Yuexin did most of the cleaning, with Han Queying’s eyes trailing behind them offering "moral support" while nibbling on the leftover dumplings.
While Ruan Lihua tried to stop Yanyu from drinking more, she prevented an alcohol poisoning since she drank straight out of the bottle.
Zhao Yiming tried helping but was quickly kicked out of the kitchen after almost breaking a porcelain plate ilin said was "antique" (it wasn’t).
Then ca ga night.
They crowded into the living room, sprawled on floor pillows and the couch, bowls of snacks within arm’s reach, soda cans sweating on the table, and a stack of Uno cards in the middle like a ticking bomb.
It started innocently enough.
Ruan Lihua leaned back lazily on the couch, her legs crossed with grace, one hand casually swirling her drink as if she were here to watch, not to destroy.
Zhao Yiming cracked his knuckles. "Alright, no bloodshed this ti. It’s just Uno."
"Tell that to ilin," Han Queying muttered, narrowing her eyes as she drew her starting hand. "She plays like it’s the national championship."
Su ilin, already focused like a sniper, didn’t even blink. "Because I play to win. No rcy."
Yanyu smirked. "Good. I was getting bored. Ti to humiliate soone." Her voice was slurred and sure she would faint in a mont, but hell!
This is uno! She needs to win and retain her dignity!
Jin Yuexin sat between ilin and Ruan Lihua, awkwardly holding her cards close to her chest. Knowing full well this would beco chaotic.
The first few rounds were fine. They were calm and having fun. Joking around each other as if they didn’t hold a stack of 4 and a reverse card in their hands to attack.
Then it happened, soone broke the peace, it was Lihua. She casually laid down a 4 card on Luo Yanyu without even looking up.
Yanyu’s eyebrow twitched. "You bitch."
Lihua sipped her tea. "Hey, watch your language! Anyway, Uno rules, darling. Draw four."
The second 4 ca from Han Queying. The third from Su ilin all fall on the sa person.
Luo Yanyu scread, "I HAVE TWENTY CARDS! TWENTY!"
Jin Yuexin made a small "eep" noise and tried to hide her giggle.
When Yanyu slamd down a skip card in revenge, ilin ducked like she was dodging a bullet. Then Yuexin, hands trembling adorably, placed a reverse card on the pile.
Everyone froze.
"Did... she just..." Yiming whispered.
ilin leaned forward slowly, her eyes wide. "Yu, sweetie... do you know what you’ve done?"
"I-I just... it said reverse..."
Han Queying burst out laughing. "Oh no, you’ve summoned the beast."
That’s when ilin went full demon mode.
She and Queying stared each other down like generals on a battlefield. Card after card dropped like artillery fire. Skip. Reverse. 2. Another reverse.
Soone shouted "Draw four, you snake!" and soone else knocked over the snacks in their rage.
Ruan Lihua just giggled and threw a 4 on ilin. "Oops."
"MADAM RUAN"
Yanyu was on the floor wheezing from laughter now, buried under a mountain of cards. Zhao Yiming tried to offer her water, only to get slapped with a Wild Color Change.
Jin Yuexin blinked at her five remaining cards. "Wait... Uno?"
Everyone turned to her like she was a heretic.
"You still have five cards," Queying deadpanned.
"Oh! Sorry. I got excited," she blushed.
Yiming dropped his head into his hands. "Why is this more stressful than fighting assassins?"
The chaos raged on.
Ruan Lihua was now cross-legged atop a pillow throne, laughing like a Bond villain as she made Su ilin draw two more cards, deliberately ssing with her competitive nature.
Han Queying had entered full interrogation mode, accusing Yanyu of hiding cards. Luo Yanyu, red-faced and vengeful, had 27 cards in her hand and was plotting legal revenge through Uno rule loopholes.
While Su ilin had started trash-talking in three different dialects. Jin Yuexin tried her best not to cry from confusion, holding six cards now, her eyes darting between the others like she was stuck in a warzone.
"Reverse. Skip. Wild. Draw four. Skip again—" ilin was muttering to herself like she was solving equations mid-battle.
"STOP REPEATING SKIP!" Yanyu howled. "LET BREATHE!"
"No," ilin and Queying said in perfect unison.
And then... it happened.
With no dramatic announcent, no flashing colors, no gloating grin...
Zhao Yiming set down his last card. A yellow seven.
The room went quiet.
"...What?"
He stretched lazily, arms behind his head, and yawned. "Uno."
Yanyu blinked. "Wait, what?!"
Queying sat up, alard. "How many cards did he have just now?!"
Lihua narrowed her eyes. "He had three a minute ago—"
"I thought he had six!" ilin cried.
"I-I didn’t even see him play?" Yuexin whispered, eyes wide.
Zhao Yiming smiled like a man who just won the lottery by accident. "Should’ve watched instead of trying to murder each other."
He picked up a chip and casually tossed it in his mouth, as if he didn’t just steal victory from under their noses.
"You sneaky bastard," Yanyu muttered.
Han Queying pointed at him. "Rematch. Now."
"No way," Zhao Yiming smirked. "Retiring undefeated."
ilin threw a pillow at his face. "YOU COWARD!"
But she was laughing. They all were. After all, this was a fun night after all that was happening around them and they hoped it would still be like this. At least, that was why Zhao Yiming was hoping.
***
Luo Yanyu was already passed out on the floor, curled up like a cat with a cushion for a pillow and a half-empty wine glass dangling from her fingertips. Her snores were soft but definitely present.
Su ilin had dragged Jin Yuexin to the guest room earlier, both girls half-asleep and giggling like children by the ti they vanished into the hallway.
That left only Zhao Yiming, Han Queying, and Ruan Lihua in the living room. The soft ambient light glowed over the coffee table, now cleaned of ga cards and replaced with mugs of hot tea.
Zhao Yiming took a sip of tea before speaking."Golden Earth isn’t just ssing with random people anymore. They were after Su ilin’s inheritance. And now they’ve gone for Jin Yuexin too..."
"Su Jinhe forced Yuexin to sign a contract when she was in an unstable mind. If I hadn’t gotten there in ti..." he clenched his hand.
Even rembering that day was enough to make him want to throw a punch at Jinhe and he regretted not doing it.
