"What’s wrong with you?"
Zhang Li didn’t expect why the police would react so strongly after hearing about the relationship between Gao Hongwei and her brother.
Mao Ji capped the mineral water bottle: "Ahem, are you and your boss dating?"
"Yes!" Zhang Li nodded.
Li Xiang ignored Mao Ji’s reaction and continued to ask, "When did it start?"
"Last year, I interviewed for a secretarial job at the company, and later the boss pursued , so I agreed."
Last year?
So, when Gao Hongwei went to the massage parlor to see Miao Xiuhui, he was already dating Zhang Li.
Li Xiang thought for a mont, then asked, "How does Gao Hongwei treat you?"
"He’s very good to , very considerate. If he wasn’t good to , I wouldn’t have stood firmly by his side amidst my family’s opposition." Zhang Li seed very satisfied with Gao Hongwei, and her face was full of happiness when she ntioned him.
However, from her words, Li Xiang heard a detail: "You an your family is against you being with him? Why?"
"Because he’s been to prison. Just because soone’s been to prison, does that make them a bad person? People who’ve never been to prison are automatically good?"
Zhang Li was speechless about her family’s views. Shouldn’t mistakes be forgiven?
Even Confucius said that there is nothing greater than being able to correct one’s mistakes. Those who’ve made mistakes have already paid their dues. Why are they rejected everywhere after coming out?
"And how about the relationship between Gao Hongwei and your brother?"
"My brother doesn’t like Gao Hongwei much either. He dislikes him for being 7 years older than and having been to prison. He thinks, with my qualities, I can find soone better. But I just like his maturity, stability, and manliness."
"Do you know Miao Xiuhui?"
"No, what’s up with her?"
"Nothing, I need to make a phone call."
After understanding the situation, Li Xiang had a preliminary idea. Perhaps Gao Hongwei’s motive to fra Zhang Lihui wasn’t jealousy over a rival in love but Zhang Li.
And there is a crucial detail that, if verified, would solidify all the criminal evidence against Zhang Lihui.
So Li Xiang called Cao Gang from Gao Hongwei’s company, asking him to request the traffic departnt to check where Gao Hongwei’s vehicle was on the night of April 25.
If he wasn’t at the company, then during the first inquiry, he lied to the police. Then... where was he?
The answer seed imminent. Now they just needed Captain Cao to have the traffic departnt pull up the road checkpoint surveillance from that night to trace the rcedes’ travel path.
While there was no surveillance at the employee dormitory area, once he left that zone, there would be surveillance, and if he went there, it would be captured on the public road video.
After making the call, Li Xiang returned to the reception room. By then, Gao Hongwei’s eting had ended. He wore a plaid shirt with black-rimd glasses, embodying the look of a successful businessman.
Which young girl wouldn’t be taken in by a domineering CEO persona?
"President Hao, take care. We look forward to more collaborations in the future."
After sending off the client, Gao Hongwei ca to the reception room: "Officer Li, I’m sorry, I planned to co after the eting. I didn’t expect you’d co. It’s not convenient to talk here. Let’s go to my office."
"It’s indeed not convenient here. How about we talk at the station instead?"
Li Xiang’s implied ssage made Gao Hongwei frown, realizing Zhang Lihui had been released. Did the police suspect sothing again? Then he noticed Zhang Li standing by: could the police already know about Zhang Li and Zhang Lihui’s relationship?
But the police hadn’t brought any formalities to make an arrest, so they probably didn’t have evidence.
His frown relaxed as he smiled and said, "Alright, I’ll just lock up my office."
After locking the door, Gao Hongwei whispered a few comforting words to Zhang Li before following Li Xiang to the police car.
Sitting in the interrogation room once again, noticing Li Xiang’s serious expression, with his experience, he sensed sothing was wrong. The police must know sothing.
He was unsettled, contemplating his next move.
What kind of questions would the police ask, and how should he answer to sound watertight?
"What’s your relationship with Zhang Li?"
"We’re dating."
"And with Miao Xiuhui?"
"Also dating." He saw Li Xiang and the others’ unusual looks and added, "Is it so strange to have two girlfriends? In today’s society, it’s quite normal."
"Stop trying to confuse us. I’m asking you, since you’re dating Zhang Li, and Zhang Lihui is Zhang Li’s brother, why didn’t you ntion it before?"
"You never asked!" Hearing the police indeed asked this question, Gao Hongwei’s heart tightened, but he was ready to play dumb and brush it off.
"Gao Hongwei, there’s a reason we called you here today. We have so evidence. If you confess now, we can consider it a voluntary confession with a positive attitude. If we have to lay the evidence on your table, you won’t get another chance."
Seeing him still pretending to be confused, Li Xiang began explaining the legal policies: leniency for confession, strictness for resistance.
But this tactic seed ineffective on the seasoned Gao Hongwei.
He was a reford convict, and in their circles, there’s an adage: "Confession leads to longer imprisonnt; resistance lets you go ho for New Year’s."
This ti he committed a serious cri. Another conviction would only be harsher, and pleading guilty would still result in a death sentence. However, if he didn’t confess and the police had no evidence, they couldn’t convict him.
