The Chief Guardian of Pingliang City was a veteran general nad Pei Lin.
Pei Lin had been a seasoned general since the ti of Li Yuan, having served under Li Yuan and then Li Shimin. After Li Shimin’s ascension to the throne, he had pledged allegiance to Luo Cheng and had been diligently serving under Luo Cheng ever since. Though he hadn’t achieved extraordinary fa or prestige, he was more than capable of holding his ground.
Standing atop the battlents, Pei Lin gripped his sword tightly, his face showing not a hint of fear. As a veteran of the battlefield, he was well aware that the battlefield was their true ho.
He had long been prepared to fight to the death and, even if the city were to fall in the end, he was determined to make the Qin Army pay a truly painful price.
At this mont, he saw from afar a small troop dashing madly from the rear of the Qin Army. Their speed was astonishing, many of the Qin soldiers hadn’t even made out their figures before they vanished from their sight.
You arrived just in ti with the Death Squad, but did not directly enter the city. Instead, you surrounded the few soldiers who were loudly shouting persuasions to surrender to those inside the city. You broke the hands of several soldiers and sent them back to tell Li Xin that you were waiting for him inside the city.
"Preposterous! Luo Yun, the young scoundrel, is utterly intolerable! n, prepare the siege equipnt at once!"
Your move was extrely effective. Seeing his soldiers treated in such a manner by you, Li Xin did not hesitate and imdiately ordered his army to prepare for the assault!
You did not return to the city with the Death Squad right away. It seed as if you did not need to speak at all; all the team mbers understood each other and swiftly ford the Infinite Bagua Formation. Wu Zhao was at the Array Eye, while you stood outside the formation, holding the Immovable Dragon Pole, a cool smirk on your resolute face.
"Here they co, everyone be cautious in your response. Just destroy two-thirds of their light engineering equipnt. Once that is done, imdiately retreat to the city, and do not engage in prolonged combat."
You issued the order. The goal was simple: to destroy a good portion of Li Xin’s limited siege equipnt. However, not completely—just two-thirds, leaving one-third for Li Xin. This would make Li Xin’s siege even more difficult and more likely to provoke his rage, driving him to a desperate final effort.
"Yes!"
Watching the thick smoke rising ahead, your heart did not falter with fear, instead, a trendous valor surged within you, feeling that only a thoroughly fierce battle could truly reveal a man’s nature!
You glanced at the Immovable Dragon Pole in your hand, and at the direction of your will, the pole, which was as thick as a wrist, suddenly grew until it reached the length of several ters and as thick as the mouth of a bowl before stopping.
"Keep fifty ters distance to my left, that side is yours to handle!"
You issued a roar and then, gripping the lengthy Immovable Dragon Pole, you charged towards the right flank where the siege rams were. Among the siege equipnt that Li Xin had brought, only those five dium-sized siege vehicles posed a significant threat—the rest were rely simple ladders and the like.
"Crash!" With brute strength, you smashed a dium-sized siege vehicle into pieces with the Immovable Dragon Pole, and even embedded the pole deeply into the earth, creating a human-sized trough behind the wrecked vehicle. Blood splattered, limbs and bodies torn asunder!
Regarding stick techniques, you didn’t know much, but having watched so television, you could still perform a few basic moves.
Like, "Sweep a thousand troops as rolling up a carpet, enemies fly scattered like chaff through a sieve!"
To your right, you advanced unopposed, throwing the battlefield into chaos in no ti, with no one capable of withstanding even a single exchange.
Wu Zhao and the Death Squad’s coordination was equally chilling. If Li Xin’s army could be likened to a valley’s torrential stream, the Death Squad was like the steadfast pillar amidst the raging currents, unwavering no matter how tumultuously the water surged. What left Li Xin gaping in astonishnt from behind was not only that the Death Squad stood undaunted, but that they could also maneuver to the greatest extent amongst the throngs of people. Wherever they passed, bodies were flung about.
"Have the Heavy Shield Soldiers surround those n, Archers, fire in unison!" Li Xin imdiately gave the order. However, as his commands were delivered and the Heavy Shield Soldiers began to assemble to encircle the Death Squad, Wu Zhao issued the order to retreat.
Among the Death Squad, only Wu Zhao had the broadest and most lucid view. She knew she had exceeded her mission paraters and that it was ti to pull back. Otherwise, once surrounded by the enemy, death was a likely outco, especially since most of the team mbers had sustained injuries, albeit minor. A protracted battle would inevitably lead to death.
At the cost of several team mbers sustaining serious injuries, the Death Squad managed to break through right before the Archers could fire in unison. However, they were not out of danger yet, for a great number of Crossbown had appeared behind them, their Powerful Crossbows already loaded and aid.
"Fire!"
With a furious shout, thousands of powerful crossbow bolts rained down on the Death Squad.
"Domination Spin!"
Just as many of the Death Squad were preparing to drop to the ground to defend, you suddenly appeared in the middle of the Infinite Bagua Formation. Accompanied by your angry shout, a golden do-shaped spinning Protective Shield encased all the team mbers, reflecting back all incoming arrows, sparing everyone from injury.
"Go!"
Protected by you, all the Death God Team mbers leaped safely onto the city wall.
Your actions were witnessed firsthand by all the soldiers on the city wall. The instant you ascended the walls, cheers erupted both from atop and below the fortification.
"I, Pei Lin, pay my respects to General Luo!" Pei Lin rushed forward with his Personal Soldiers to greet you. Cheng Chuliang had already told you before your arrival that this Pei Lin was a subordinate of your father Luo Cheng, always loyally devoted to the Tang Dynasty. Had you not co to the rescue, Pei Lin would have certainly died defending Pingliang City along with it.
"General Pei, please rise quickly!" You hurried to help Pei Lin to his feet. "General Pei is of the sa rank as I am, such formalities are not necessary."
"I am but a simple general, truly undeserving of such esteem from Commander Luo."
Pei Lin was visibly moved, fully aware of what your arrival signified. Although he had been prepared to die, your appearance gave him hope that Pingliang City’s twenty-thousand soldiers and the tens of thousands of civilians might be saved.
Pingliang City was just a small town with a scant population. Coupled with previous ravages by the Qin Army, the city’s population had plumted from over a hundred thousand to barely sixty or seventy thousand, mostly composed of the elderly, won, and children. The able-bodied n had either enlisted early on or had died in previous defenses of the city.
From the outside, Pingliang’s defensive facilities seed passable, but it was all just for show. Inside, the city was riddled with weaknesses.
Of Pei Lin’s twenty-thousand soldiers, there were less than a battalion of Archers, the rest were all infantry. Additionally, defensive equipnt such as rocks, boiling oil, and fire pillars were nearly extinct within the city. Pei Lin knew that once Li Xin launched his assault, Pingliang would fall within three days without a doubt!
"Boss, Chang Zhi is not going to make it!" Shi Kai called out in urgency at that mont.
