Su’s mom was left speechless by her daughter’s comnt.
"You only walked him to the elevator???" Su’s mom glared at Su Man with a look of exasperated disappointnt. "Do you even realize, if it weren’t for him stepping in, your dad might not have made it today!"
Su’s dad awkwardly said, "But I’m alive now..."
Su’s mom turned to glare at him. "So being saved ans we don’t have to show gratitude?!"
Su’s dad murmured softly, "That’s not what I ant..."
"This child’s behavior is all because you spoiled her! She’s so careless with basic manners!" Su’s mom criticized harshly.
Su Man, used to being scolded, picked at her ear and said, "But he said there was no need to walk him further..."
Su’s mom snapped, "That was just polite talk!"
Fed up, Su Man raised her voice. "Alright! I get it! Next ti, even if he says I don’t have to walk him, I will insist on walking him downstairs, all the way to his front door. Would that be enough?"
Su’s mom pointed at Su Man and turned to her husband. "Look at that temper! This is all your fault for indulging her!"
Su Man pouted and muttered under her breath, "Grandpa and Grandma said my temper is inherited from you."
Su’s mom was so exasperated she closed her eyes and waved her hand. "Alright, stop talking. Just go ho and co back tomorrow morning. Don’t forget to bring your dad’s toothbrush and water cup."
"Oh." Su Man grabbed her bag. "I’m leaving then."
Su’s dad, not wanting to listen to more bickering, said, "Go, go. Be careful driving. Stay safe."
Su’s mom added, "Rember to tell Aunt Zhang not to cook pork or seafood these few days. For tomorrow’s breakfast, just make so vegetable congee and vegetarian buns. Don’t forget."
Aunt Zhang was their family’s cook.
"Got it."
Su Man slung her bag over her shoulder and left.
...
Tonight, with her dad’s car accident and his close brush with danger, her emotions had been all over the place. Now leaving the hospital room, she let out a breath of relief but felt utterly drained.
Suddenly, her phone rang.
She pulled it out to check—it was Li Li calling. Her heart ward at the sight of his na.
——Li Li was practically her childhood friend, the boy next door. They had grown up together, and their families had been close for decades.
Earlier tonight, as she and her mom scrambled out the door upon hearing about her dad’s accident, she had accidentally backed the car into the fence, which startled the Li Family next door. Now, Li Li was calling, probably to ask about her dad’s condition.
Su Man picked up the phone, and Li Li’s voice ca through:
"Manman, have you guys made it to the hospital?"
In the background, his parents’ voices interjected:
"Quick, ask how he’s doing!"
"Ask if her dad’s in danger. Do they need help finding a doctor? What about the driver who caused the accident? Did they catch him?"
Li Li, clearly annoyed, said, "Can you let talk? I’m asking, aren’t I?!"
Su Man held the phone, feeling a small pang of disappointnt...
So it was Uncle Li and Aunt Li who put him up to calling her.
As she walked, she replied softly, "My dad’s injuries are alright, not too severe. It’s just that during the car accident... it triggered a heart attack. Luckily, a kind stranger got him to the hospital in ti. He’s fine now."
"As long as he’s okay," Li Li let out a sigh of relief, then turned to his parents. "Did you hear that? Now you can go to bed without worrying, right?"
Li Li’s dad’s voice ca through:
"As long as he’s fine. But with your dad in the hospital, it’ll be tough on you and your mom. Manman, if you need anything, don’t hesitate to let us know."
Su Man stepped into the elevator. "Mm, thank you, Uncle. Uncle, I’m in the elevator now, so I’ll hang up."
"Alright, alright, you can hang up. Tomorrow we’ll co to the hospital to visit your dad..."
In the fading mont before the signal cut out, she vaguely overheard Li Li saying, "But my award ceremony..."
The call was then disconnected.
Su Man silently watched the elevator numbers tick downward. When it reached the first floor, she stepped out.
As she was walking out, a sidelong glance caught sight of Lu Yuwen standing over by the ergency paynt window, asking about sothing.
Su Man froze, slightly stunned.
Strange. Why hasn’t he left yet?
