Chapter 347: 346. Air Leak_1
Lu Ban repeatedly confird that the task indeed did not contain Amber’s na.
Therefore, he could escort Amber to the Great Shrine of Harmony Island, then wait for the Shrine Maidens’ competition to end, and witness a ceremony. That would be it.
However, could it really be alright if Amber was not the new Chief Priestess?
Lu Ban had confird Amber’s power, which could carve out a patch of sunlight amidst such a storm, was truly astonishing.
If she beca the Chief Priestess, then He Dao should be able to remain undisturbed by the filth for a while.
Moreover, becoming the Chief Priestess would definitely bring her glory, wealth, great influence, and the adoration of thousands.
Amber could have whatever she wanted, eat whatever she liked, standing above ten thousand people, she would be the most special and noble person in this world.
Even if she beca the Chief Priestess, she should still be able to enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, play in the water in sumr. Though her life might not be as easy, at least she would be able to experience a fair amount of happiness.
“Is this task really that simple…”
Lu Ban decided to take care of the invading Chosen by Gods first.
Since he knew the other party hadn’t died, then the other party must know Amber wasn’t dead either. So following him all the way here, they were sure to take action.
Regardless of whether Amber wanted to beco the Chief Priestess or live a peaceful life sowhere, Lu Ban must kill this invader.
Early in the morning, Lu Ban and Amber took a boat to the dock. He did not reveal Amber’s identity, but in this age of poor communication, these people probably would not recognize Amber anyway.
The pirates’ savings were plentiful, and Lu Ban had a sum of He Dao money. Changfeng Island did not have any businesses like inns open to the public, only lodgings like the Shrine Executive Officer and He Dao Magistrate’s stations, which common folk surely couldn’t afford to stay in.
Without revealing their identities, Lu Ban could only find a fisherman to rent a room previously used for storage, and bought so girls’ clothes for Amber to change into.
“How, how does it look?”
Amber did a twirl, wearing the common clothes of a young girl of the season made of slightly finer fabric. Though not as comfortable as silk or cotton, the plain clothes had been embroidered with patterns like hydrangeas to the best of the craftsman’s abilities, making the wearer seem more lively.
“Should I perhaps dress more plainly?”
Lu Ban pondered, resting his chin on his hand.
“???”
Amber didn’t hear the complint she was expecting and looked sowhat aggrieved.
“Otherwise, it might attract attention. After all, with your looks, you are bound to be quite noticeable on this island,” Lu Ban added.
“…Shall I change into sothing plain, then?”
Amber looked at her wardrobe, slightly embarrassed.
Amber, who had never bought clothes before, bought a huge pile, mostly of the season’s wear, many adorned with cute patterns, which were quite simple due to limited craftsmanship.
It is said that during the Chief Priestess’s inauguration ceremony, the Shrine Maiden must wear an official white robe and scarlet hakama, draped with a Chihaya featuring pine and crane motifs, a crown on her head, and holding a Divine Bell with fifteen bells, dancing under the gaze of the deities.
But now, Amber felt these matters were far removed from herself.
“Let’s just stick with this outfit,” Lu Ban said without letting Amber change again. Her amber eyes were already striking enough to attract attention. If the invading Chosen by Gods ca to Changfeng Island, they would easily find their whereabouts.
This was part of Lu Ban’s plan.
Instead of hiding, it was better to bait and hook the fish, to lure the opponent out.
Yet, once the task was complete, Lu Ban would have to return to his own world, leaving Amber behind.
So the things she talked about, Lu Ban didn’t actually have much he could promise.
He opened the door, and in the courtyard stood a cherry blossom tree. In He Dao, these trees could be seen almost everywhere, and the most robust one stood at the Great Shrine of Harmony Island. Behind the Shrine’s torii gate towered a majestic tree, also known as the Divine Sakura. Every spring, its petals would fall from treetop to He Dao, blanketing the entire island. The sight of cherry blossoms fluttering down like raindrops was breathtaking.
After three days on Changfeng Island, both of them had gradually adapted to life on the island.
The fisherman’s daughter was only five years old, wearing sowhat tattered clothes and playing with a slightly deflated ball in the yard.
“Your ball is deflated,” Lu Ban said seriously.
“Deflated… deflated!” the little girl echoed.
“Can you read?”
“Read?” the little girl repeated.
“Indeed, the essence of humans is parrots. It is evident right from their young,” Lu Ban remarked.
Lu Ban stroked his chin deep in thought.
“Don’t treat children like that,”
Amber said, leaning in toward the little girl and gently patting her head.
“How about I keep you company and play with you?”
“Play with you… play with you… wuu wuu wuu—”
The little girl suddenly burst into tears, leaving Amber at a loss and also bringing tears to her own eyes.
“Wait, wait, just hold on, don’t cry, please don’t cry.”
The tears looked like they could spread from the little girl to Amber.
Lu Ban crouched down.
“Let
show you a magic trick.”
He said to the little girl.
The little girl stopped crying upon hearing this, looking at Lu Ban with curiosity.
“Here is my hand.”
Lu Ban raised a finger and waggled it in front of the little girl.
Then, he rubbed his finger on a pebble on the ground, scraping off a layer of skin and blood began to seep out.
Seeing Lu Ban’s finger, the little girl’s eyes filled with tears again, and she was about to start crying.
At that mont, a blade of grass sprouted from the tip of Lu Ban’s finger.
The little girl’s crying face froze.
With tears in her eyes, she gazed in amazent as the grass on Lu Ban’s finger grew taller and even sprouted a flower.
Lu Ban picked the flower and handed it to the little girl.
“Isn’t it amazing!”
He said excitedly.
“Be serious!”
Amber gave Lu Ban a smack on the back of his head, warning him not to use his extraordinary powers to amuse a child.
The little girl, holding the flower, joyously dug into the ground with a stone and inserted the flower solemnly, then carefully covered it back up.
“Grow big quickly.”
The little girl brought her hands together in prayer.
“It will grow.”
Amber also said a prayer, and the flower actually grew taller and sprouted more leaves, as if it truly absorbed nourishnt and grew.
“…Aren’t you the sa?”
Lu Ban comnted sarcastically.
“This is to give her a beautiful childhood,”
Amber glanced at Lu Ban.
“This woman, such a strong sense of double standards.”
Lu Ban muttered.
“So you’re here. My husband caught so fish while out at sea today; let
share so with you. They’re all very fresh, you can cook them without even adding salt,”
The landlady who rented out the courtyard brought several fish over to Lu Ban in a bamboo basket.
“These fish are really plump, looks like today’s catch was good.”
These fishern rely on the heavens for their livelihood; without modern farming thods, most go out to sea to fish. Here, there’s no such thing as going to the market if you can’t catch fish. On days without a catch, there might not even be enough to eat.
“Yes, there’s been a lot of fish recently, and the quality is excellent. We can stockpile quite a bit. Oh, by the way, I heard a big shot has co to the island. It seems he killed quite a few pirates and is going to speak at the Island Steward’s place this afternoon,”
The landlady went on.
“A big shot?”
This piqued Lu Ban’s caution.
“Right, I’m not sure of the details, but I heard from so people who ca back from the shore this morning that he’s injured, covered in bandages,”
The woman spoke as if moved by the tale.
