Riven was too panicked to be vain right now. But still—that face.

If they weren’t sworn enemies, Riven might’ve been weak to those lips.

Not that he’d ever admit it.

Julius finally spoke again, tilting his head in an easy display of arrogance.

"I was... Rather occupied."

Riven did not like the way he said that.

His father sneered. "Occupied? With what? Plotting your next failure?"

Julius barely blinked. "I will go in his place."

The room fell into silence.

Riven’s ears perked up.

Julius continued, calm as ever. "They just need soone with noble blood."

"Noble blood?" Their father laughed, but it wasn’t a pleasant laugh. It was sharp and mocking, his expression curling into sothing cruel. "Seems like you’ve forgotten that I am not your father."

The air in the room shifted.

Even Riven, as vain and self-absorbed as he was, felt it.

That was brutal.

His father had always favoured Julius over him.

Julius was the perfect heir, the perfect wolf, the one who mattered.

And yet, even after all of that, their father just casually ripped the rug out from under him with a single sentence.

Julius froze for a split second.

A flicker of sothing unreadable passed through his eyes.

But it was gone just as quickly.

Riven, anwhile, was still processing.

Riven stared at Julius, watching carefully for his reaction. When their father had sneered out those words—"Seems like you’ve forgotten that I am not your father"—there wasn’t even a flicker of surprise on Julius’ face. Not even a blink.

Huh.

Riven tilted his head, his ears twitching. So, Julius knew. He knew his father’s true feelings towards him... He’d probably been hearing those words his entire life. Damn. That was almost sad.

Almost.

Did that justify how he tornted the original Riven? Absolutely not. But still, Riven found himself looking at Julius with just a tiny, fleeting bit of pity.

It must have been hard, he thought. Being the "adopted" son, never really belonging, always having to prove yourself. If he squinted, it made sense why Julius had been so obsessed with proving that he was better than Riven.

Well. It would have made sense—if Julius wasn’t such a massive jerk about it.

And Julius, because he was Julius, caught that tiny flicker of pity in Riven’s gaze imdiately. His lips curved into a smirk, sharp and mocking, as if to say, Spare your pity, half-breed. He squared his shoulders and opened his mouth to speak.

"In any case, I insist—" Julius began, voice firm.

Riven raised a brow. Insist on what? Was he still trying to take his place? Why was he acting like he was volunteering for war? He was probably just trying to be a noble idiot—wait. Oh.

Riven narrowed his eyes. Was Julius worried? That made him smirk.

Julius was worried. Over him.

Adorable. Riven then realised he had a problem, a psychological problem, why was he attracted to red flags?

Riven’s tail flicked behind him, ears perking up slightly. He should have known. Julius was still reeling from their little... Interaction upstairs. Now that he’d finally co to terms with his feelings, the idea of Riven going off with another man—especially soone like Ronan—was probably unbearable.

Julius didn’t get to finish his sentence before their father barked, "I said, shut up!"

Julius’ jaw clenched, his hands curling into fists, but he didn’t speak again.

Their father exhaled sharply, rubbing his temple like this was all sohow an inconvenience to him. He looked at Riven then, his gaze as unkind as ever. "Alpha Ronan has decided on Riven. We can only follow his orders."

He paused, letting those words settle. Then his voice dropped lower, heavier, full of unspoken aning. "Don’t ss up. Don’t offend Ronan. If you create any trouble... then forget you have a family. You’re on your own."

Riven blinked.

Damn.

He knew his father didn’t exactly love him—that much had been clear since day one—but hearing those words so blatantly? That was a new one.

His father didn’t believe in him. At all. He was convinced that Riven would fail, embarrass himself, and end up crawling back ho in disgrace—if he even made it back alive.

Honestly, Riven might have been insulted if he hadn’t been so used to this by now.

His tail gave an involuntary flick—traitorous thing, always reacting before he could mask his emotions—but Riven just rolled his shoulders back and put on his usual smirk.

"Oh, don’t worry, Father. I definitely won’t be coming back," he said, flashing a grin that was all teeth. He definitely did not want to co back again... He loved pretty boys but even he had his limits, he was not about to say "I’m stuck step-bro." While looking at Julius.

He involuntarily shook at the thought.

His father exhaled through his nose, clearly unimpressed. "We’ll see," he muttered before waving a dismissive hand. "Now go. I don’t want to see your face anymore."

Riven humd, deliberately slow and lazy, just to be annoying. "With pleasure," he said, turning on his heel.

He barely got two steps before Julius grabbed his wrist.

"Wait," Julius said, his voice low, strained.

Riven turned back, annoyed but also... Kind of interested. What was Julius trying to do now?

"I—" Julius hesitated, his grip tightening slightly. His gaze flickered to their father, then back to Riven.

Riven raised a brow. Was he about to say sothing dramatic?

Riven’s tail swished behind him in amusent.

Julius inhaled sharply—and then, instead of saying sothing heart-wrenching or serious... he leaned down slightly, just enough so only Riven could hear him.

"Don’t get too excited, half-breed," he murmured. "Ronan may be an Alpha, but he’s not as handso as I am."

Riven choked. Was he for real? Besides, Ronan was far more handso than Julius ever was.

He stared at him, eyes wide with sothing between horror and sheer disbelief. "Are you serious right now?"

Julius simply smirked, tilting his head slightly. He got closer and whispered into Riven’s ears, "If you dare flirt with anyone else, I will cut your tail off."
