Zhou Yuwen had parked his car not far from the teaching building. While Zheng Yanyan and Chang Hao were talking, Zhou Yuwen had already pulled up in front of the building.
Just then, Zheng Yanyan’s phone rang. Glancing at Chang Hao, who was still trying to advise her, she replied coolly, “This is between Zhou Yuwen and . It’s none of your business.”
“What the heck?” Zheng Yanyan was truly baffled by Chang Hao’s interference.
He had called her “pathetic”?
Where was she “pathetic”?
They’d barely exchanged a couple of words, and he labeled her that?
Did he not realize he was the one behaving pathetically?
She had felt sowhat guilty for taking up so much of Chang Hao’s ti, but after hearing his words, she realized he wasn’t exactly tactful. Ignoring him completely, she turned and walked off.
Chang Hao was frustrated, too, ntally kicking himself for choosing the word “pathetic.” No wonder Zhou Yuwen had a girlfriend, and he didn’t. He seriously needed to work on his people skills!
“Hey, Brother Hao, still planning on getting lunch?” Li Qiang jogged up to him.
Zhou Yuwen had been waiting in his car outside the teaching building for over half an hour, and he’d just stepped out to stretch.
Despite having been at the school for less than a week, his convertible had already beco sothing of a sensation. Wherever it went, people stopped and stared. So girls would point it out, saying, “Wow, what a cool car! I want to buy one like that after I graduate.”
In the ti Zhou Yuwen took a short break outside, two girls from afar started whispering, casting glances at the car.
After a while, Zheng Yanyan finally walked out of the teaching building.
The school’s staircase led down directly from the second floor, and Zheng Yanyan, wearing a denim pencil skirt that showed off her long legs, didn’t look particularly happy as she descended.
Seeing her approach, Zhou Yuwen opened the car door and said, “Let’s go get so lunch.”
“Hold on a second!” Zheng Yanyan didn’t get in. Instead, she stood there with a stern expression.
Zhou Yuwen looked at her in confusion. “What’s up?”
“Don’t you think you owe
an explanation about what’s going on with you and Su Qing?” she asked, face stern.
At this mont, Chang Hao and Li Qiang had also exited the building.
Could soone like Zheng Yanyan ever be “pathetic”?
Absolutely not. She stood there, glaring at Zhou Yuwen.
“Hey, Brother Hao, aren’t you going to say hi to Zhou?”
“Screw that.” Chang Hao retorted bluntly.
“Wait, it looks like they’re arguing,” Li Qiang observed.
“Hmm?” Chang Hao turned to see what was happening, and there they were—Zhou Yuwen and Zheng Yanyan standing together, with Zheng Yanyan clearly furious, glaring up at him.
Su Qing had been telling everyone in their dorm that she and Zhou Yuwen had dated in high school.
“So, do you have anything to say for yourself?” Zheng Yanyan pressed, her face cold.
Zhou Yuwen asked, “What’s there to explain?”
Zheng Yanyan kept her eyes on him, silent.
Seeing her look like this, Zhou Yuwen sighed and said, “Yes, Su Qing and I knew each other in high school.”
“Just knew each other?” She was clearly uncomfortable hearing that.
“We liked each other back then,” he admitted.
“And?” she pressed.
“There is no ‘and.’ We just liked each other, that’s all,” Zhou Yuwen said.
Zheng Yanyan looked him in the eye. “Did you date her?”
Zhou Yuwen chuckled. “You’ve already made up your mind, so why do I need to explain?”
Then, noticing her eyes welling up as if she’d been betrayed, Zhou Yuwen paused, surprised by her reaction. Gently, he asked, “Co on, baby, why are you crying?”
He reached out to pull her into his arms, but Zheng Yanyan imdiately pushed him away, looking hurt. “Zhou Yuwen, you’re my first love.”
Zhou Yuwen replied, “She and I only had mutual feelings in high school. You’re my first love too.”
“Yeah, right!” she snapped. “You even touched her, and you call that ‘mutual feelings’?”
“So that’s why you’re so experienced? Practiced on Su Qing first, huh?”
“...” Zhou Yuwen felt cornered.
Chang Hao was already feeling miffed at Zhou Yuwen and didn’t want to say hi, but Li Qiang was too entertained to let it go.
“Whoa, Brother Hao, look! She’s crying!”
Chang Hao looked up to see tears streaming down Zheng Yanyan’s face. His expression darkened as he strode over.
Zhou Yuwen was comforting his girlfriend when suddenly Chang Hao shouted, “What do you think you’re doing?”
“?” Zhou Yuwen looked up to see Chang Hao glaring at him, practically fuming. “Talk it out, fine. But why are you getting all handsy?” Chang Hao was practically seething.
He even tried to shove Zhou Yuwen aside.
Alard, Zheng Yanyan quickly pulled Zhou Yuwen out of the way.
Chang Hao ended up swiping at the air, looking flustered.
“What’s your problem, Chang Hao? Are you nuts?” she snapped, annoyed at his aggressive behavior.
“He’s bullying you!” Chang Hao protested, clearly upset.
“Which eye of yours saw him bullying ?”
Chang Hao was about to say, “You’re crying,” but the look she was giving him made the words stick in his throat.
Unable to direct his frustration at her, he turned his ire back on Zhou Yuwen. Glaring, he demanded, “If you’re really a man, explain yourself. What’s your relationship with Su Qing?”
“Yanyan’s your girlfriend, so why are you flirting with other girls?”
“Yes, I know you’re impressive, but if you’re dating, then date properly. You think just because Yanyan doesn’t have friends here, you can bully her?”
Chang Hao’s intention was to stand up for Zheng Yanyan.
In their past life, he and Zhou Yuwen had been pretty close, playing gas together for four years. But now, seeing Chang Hao’s indignant expression while defending his girlfriend, Zhou Yuwen felt seriously annoyed.
The worst part was that Zheng Yanyan wasn’t saying anything, letting Chang Hao speak for her as if to remind Zhou Yuwen that she had other options, that he wasn’t her only choice, and that he should appreciate her more.
“Oh, so you’re pretty close with him?” Zhou Yuwen asked her nonchalantly.
Her eyes widened. “No, I’m not.”
Originally, Zheng Yanyan held the upper hand, and Zhou Yuwen was willing to console her. But with Chang Hao’s intervention, the situation completely changed.
“I’ve told you everything there is to know. If you feel I’ve wronged you, or that I’m not treating you well, then go find soone who will.”
He glanced at Chang Hao’s indignant face and added, “Chang Hao seems like a good guy. Why don’t you date him?”
“What are you saying?” she cried, shocked.
But Zhou Yuwen was done. Frankly, he no longer saw a reason to keep dating Zheng Yanyan. He did like her, but she was a lot of work, and after just two weeks, it was clear she wasn’t easy to handle.
Better to end things early.
“You’re right. We should seriously reconsider our relationship. Let’s take a break and think things over,” Zhou Yuwen said, climbing back into the driver’s seat.
“Zhou Yuwen!” Zheng Yanyan’s face went pale as he sat in the car, and she moved to follow him.
But he stopped her. “I’ve already cleared things up with Su Qing. Talk things over with him first, then we’ll talk.”
“What’s there to talk about? I have nothing to do with him!” she cried desperately.
Without another word, Zhou Yuwen drove off.
“You jerk!” Zheng Yanyan shouted after him, furious.
He was the one ssing around with other girls!
It felt like Zhou Yuwen was her nesis.
Fuming, she stomped her foot. As for Chang Hao, he couldn’t deny feeling a bit satisfied. After all, Zhou Yuwen had said it himself: “Chang Hao treats you well.”
Chang Hao took that as an endorsent. Even Zhou Yuwen could see he liked her.
“Good riddance, Yanyan. He’s not worth it. You deserve better!” Chang Hao said, clearly pleased with the outco.
Already upset, she turned on him. “What’s that supposed to an? Are you happy that Zhou Yuwen and I broke up?”
“No!” Chang Hao protested. “Yanyan, he’s a jerk, clearly looking to ditch you! How can’t you see that?”
“Shut up! If you hadn’t butted in, he wouldn’t have left!” She glared at him, annoyed.
Li Qiang let out a quiet laugh. “Wow, this is too good. Can’t get any better than this.”
She shot him a glare, and he coughed awkwardly. “Um, I’m gonna grab lunch.”
Li Qiang quickly slipped away.
Chang Hao was left speechless, biting his lip. “Fine! My bad. But Yanyan, he’s no good! He doesn’t care about you. Just break up with
him. Don’t put up with this!”
The more he spoke, the more her frown deepened. “Do you think if I break up with Zhou Yuwen, I’d even consider you?”
“I didn’t an it like that!” Chang Hao denied imdiately.
“You’d better not.” She snapped, “I’m telling you now—even if I break up with Zhou Yuwen, it won’t be for you.”
“But he doesn’t even like you!” Chang Hao protested, frustrated.
“Stop lying! He’d be jealous if he didn’t care! If it weren’t for you, he wouldn’t have left
here.”
“What did I tell you earlier in the hallway? I said this had nothing to do with you, but you had to get involved. Happy now? Can’t stand to see
happy, can you?”
Zheng Yanyan scolded him again, then pulled out her phone to call Zhou Yuwen. He declined the call.
The more he ignored her, the angrier she got. “I know why you’re doing this, Chang Hao. You’re mad that I’m with Zhou Yuwen and not you.”
She tried calling him on WeChat this ti, but he didn’t pick up.
“You did this on purpose! You’re thrilled we broke up, aren’t you? Zhou Yuwen had already apologized to , but you had to butt in. You just can’t stand to see
happy!”
Chang Hao was ready to burst with frustration.
But at that mont, she broke down crying.
“Happy now? Zhou Yuwen won’t take my calls. If he dumps
and goes back to Su Qing, you’ll be thrilled, right?”
“You just can’t stand to see
happy!”
The more she said, the sadder she beca. Before, at least, his phone was off. Now, he was outright rejecting her calls, including on WeChat.
Seeing her cry, Chang Hao felt a pang of guilt. Finally, he muttered, “I really thought he was bullying you. So, what do we do now?”
“Maybe I should apologize to him?”
“No! I’m begging you, Chang Hao—just stay out of things with
and Zhou Yuwen. Can’t you see? He doesn’t like
hanging around you! I’m his girlfriend, so why do you keep intervening?”
“Fine,” he mumbled, embarrassed. “I’ll call him and clear things up.”
“Don’t make it worse! Just leave
alone! I’ll handle it myself.” She glared at him, then stord off.
Strangely enough, this ti, Zheng Yanyan wasn’t as angry as she had been over Su Qing.
When it was Su Qing, it felt like he was betraying her.
But this ti, it felt like Zhou Yuwen was just a bit jealous of Chang Hao.
And jealousy was a sign that he cared.
She felt that a little coaxing would fix things with Zhou Yuwen.
She didn’t take it too seriously.
As the afternoon wore on, she sent him a few texts, but he didn’t reply.
One read:
“I know you’re jealous of Chang Hao.
“But think about it—you’re the one with ssy ties to Su Qing.
“I blocked Chang Hao ages ago. If it weren’t for looking for you, I wouldn’t even talk to him.”
“I’ve called you more than ten tis.
“You didn’t answer any of them.
“Fine, I’ll wait and see how long you ignore .
“Let’s both take so ti to cool off.”
Still, Zhou Yuwen didn’t respond.
Seeing that he hadn’t changed their couple’s profile pictures, she thought he probably still liked her. Otherwise, he’d have switched it by now.
And so, the two of them kept their couple’s icons unchanged.
Throughout the afternoon, she kept checking, reassured each ti she saw it was still the sa.
Sitting in her class in the lecture hall, the ceiling fan slowly spinning above her, her roommate Lu Lin nudged her. “What’s on your mind? You seem distracted.”
Frustrated, Zheng Yanyan asked, “Lu Lin, could you send a ssage to Zhou Yuwen for ?”
