As for where the spirits of the people from Buddha's Pure Land Realm had gone, Sun Wukong had two guesses. As Sun Wukong's hands pressed down on the earth and invoked the power of space, Tang Sanzang, Sha Wujing, and the young monk felt an almost suffocating discomfort instantaneously. Then the surrounding space fluctuated slightly, and the several hundred thousand monks that surrounded the entire Buddha-worshipping Sect's mountain gate disappeared in a flash.
A spatial gate doesn't necessarily have to open in front. Sotis opening it at one's feet has a better effect. Seeing Tathagata, whom they thought dead, was indeed surprising.
However, Tang Sanzang clearly saw Tathagata too, but showed no unusual reaction, no sign of surprise. At first, Sun Wukong thought Master didn't see clearly, but when Tathagata and his entourage directly landed in the Lotus Cloud Courtyard, only seven or eight ters away from the three of them, Sanzang still showed no reaction. Disappointed, Sun Wukong realized that even seeing Tathagata didn't seem to stir Master's mory.
