Yu Holea and Yu Sicong rolled their eyes. Truly their mother couldn’t hide anything.
Sheng Yin stared at them suspiciously.
...............................
The hospital room was eerily quiet except for the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor attached to Old Mrs. Yu.
She lay unconscious on the bed, her fragile fra shrouded by sterile white sheets.
At her bedside stood Yu i, her face twisted into a mask of rage.
Her nails dug into the side of the chair she gripped as she stared at the elderly woman with unrestrained malice.
"Useless old hag," Yu i muttered through clenched teeth, her voice low but venomous.
"After everything I’ve done, even you turned out to be worthless. You could’ve been my key to victory."
Her eyes burned with resentnt, and she felt an all-too-familiar pang of bitterness clawing at her insides.
Suddenly, Yu i felt her vision blur.
A chilling sensation spread through her body like icy tendrils, dragging her consciousness into a void.
She gasped, clutching her chest as her surroundings lted into an oppressive black nothingness.
When she opened her eyes, she found herself in complete darkness.
Then ca the voice—a deep, guttural growl that seed to emanate from the very fabric of the void.
"Yu i," it drawled, the sound slicing through the silence like a blade.
"What a disappointnt you’ve turned out to be."
Yu i’s heart raced as she turned frantically, trying to locate the source of the voice.
Sweat dripped down her temples, her body trembling as she managed to stamr,
"Lord, I... I can explain."
"Explain?" the entity hissed, its voice laced with contempt.
"I gave you a plan. A perfect plan. You were to harm one of Yu Holea’s beloved—cripple her resolve—and then strike her down when she was weakest.
Yet, you defied my instructions, consud by your pathetic jealousy."
Yu i fell to her knees, her head bowing low.
"Lord, please! It’s not that I didn’t want to follow your plan—it’s just that Qiao Jun is too powerful! Harming him would have been—"
"Lies!" the entity roared, its voice reverberating in the void.
Yu i let out a choked gasp as an invisible force began pulling at her, a sensation like her very soul being dragged from her body.
She clawed at her chest, panic consuming her.
"Wait! Please!" she scread, her voice cracking with terror.
"I was wrong! I lied! I— I let my emotions get the better of ! I was jealous of Yu Holea, jealous of everything she had! I admit it, Master! Please forgive !"
The suction stopped abruptly, leaving Yu i gasping for air. She collapsed onto the unseen ground, trembling violently.
"Know this, Yu i," it said coldly.
"Should you dare to quibble or deceive again, I will not hesitate to end your miserable existence and consu your soul."
Yu i’s head snapped up, her tear-streaked face a mask of terror.
"I understand, lord. I won’t fail you again."
Yu i’s stomach twisted in dread.
"I’ll... I’ll start right away! I’ll find soone—"
"You will not delay," the entity interrupted, its tone final. "I require a sacrifice now."
Yu i’s blood ran cold.
Her mind raced as she tried to think of a solution.
Who could she offer? Who was expendable?
Her gaze flicked upward, desperate and searching, but her thoughts were chaotic.
The entity seed to sense her hesitation and chuckled darkly.
"Allow to assist you. That feeble old woman lying in the hospital bed... She will suffice."
Yu i froze, her heart skipping a beat.
"Old Mrs. Yu?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "But... she’s—she’s already on her deathbed. What’s the point—"
"Do you dare question ?" the entity growled, the force of its presence bearing down on her like a crushing weight.
Yu i’s shoulders slumped under the pressure, her protests dying in her throat.
"I have waited long enough, Yu i," it continued, its tone icy and unyielding.
"End her life now, or face the consequences of your defiance."
Yu i’s mind spiraled into chaos.
Her fingers curled into fists, her nails biting into her palms as she tried to steady her shaking body.
Fear warred with guilt, but in the end, fear won.
"I’ll do it," she whispered hoarsely, her voice barely audible. "I’ll take her life."
The entity’s laugh echoed in the void, chilling her to the core.
"Good. Do not disappoint again, Yu i."
As the void dissolved around her and she returned to the hospital room, Yu i found herself standing beside Old Mrs. Yu once more.
Her hands trembled as she reached for the pillow on the bed, her breath shallow and erratic.
Tears stread down her face as she lifted it, whispering to herself,
"I have no choice... I have no choice..."
Her breathing was shallow, her chest heaving as she raised the pillow higher.
Every fiber of her being scread for her to stop, but the fear of the dark entity’s wrath silenced any hesitation.
In one swift motion, she pressed the pillow against Old Mrs. Yu’s frail face, her hands trembling as she applied pressure.
The monts stretched endlessly, the sound of the heart monitor beeping slower and slower until—
Beep.
Beep.
...
Silence.
Yu i’s hands fell away, the pillow slipping from her grasp as she stumbled backward.
Her legs gave way, and she collapsed into the chair beside the bed, her chest heaving.
Suddenly, her surroundings shifted. Her vision blurred as her breath caught in her throat.
A strange, dark mist coiled around Old Mrs. Yu’s body, forming an ethereal hand that gripped her lifeless chest.
Yu i’s eyes widened in horror as she watched Old Mrs. Yu’s soul—soft and glowing with a faint light—rise above her body.
"No... no... I didn’t..." she stamred, shaking her head as if to convince herself of her innocence.
Before she could process what was happening, the dark hand made of black wisps snatched the soul, clutching it tightly.
The faint light dimd as the soul let out a soundless scream, and then it vanished into nothingness, consud by the entity.
Yu i’s trembling hands shot up to cover her mouth.
A wave of nausea churned in her stomach as her tears fell more freely.
She curled into herself, rocking slightly as she sobbed.
"I... I didn’t want this..." she whimpered. "She was... such a good pawn... useful..."
Her words faltered, and for a fleeting mont, a pang of genuine regret pierced her.
But it was too late.
After several minutes of crying, she wiped her tears hastily.
Her breaths steadied as her survival instincts kicked in.
She rushed toward the door, her heart pounding as she forced her features into a mask of desperation.
"Doctor!" she scread, her voice hoarse. "Doctor, help! Sothing’s wrong with her!"
The sound of hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Two doctors and a nurse burst into the room, their faces tense with urgency.
Yu i stood near the bed, her hands clasped over her chest as if praying, her face a picture of despair.
"Please, check her!" she cried. "She—she was fine just monts ago!"
The dical team sprang into action, but Yu i knew the outco before they even started.
The doctors checked Old Mrs. Yu’s vitals, their expressions grim as they shook their heads.
"I’m sorry," one of them said, his voice low and somber. "She’s gone."
Yu i let out a piercing wail, crumpling to the floor beside the bed.
Her cries echoed through the room, filled with heartbreak and anguish that even the most skeptical observer would find hard to doubt.
"No!" she sobbed, clutching the sheets of the hospital bed. "No, she can’t be gone! Please, no!"
The nurse closest to her placed a hand on her shoulder, her voice soft and comforting.
"Miss Yu, please... we know how much you cared for her. This isn’t your fault."
Yu i’s cries intensified as she buried her face in her hands, trembling with grief.
The nurses exchanged sympathetic glances while one of them discreetly pulled out her phone to take a picture.
Yu i noticed the action out of the corner of her eye and inwardly smirked, even as her sobs continued.
She knew that her display of devastation would soon spread across the hospital and beyond. It was all part of the act.
By the ti the nurses and doctors began to make arrangents for the body, Yu i had thoroughly solidified her role as the heartbroken granddaughter, mourning the loss of a beloved family elder.
Inside, however, she felt a twisted sense of satisfaction.
The first sacrifice had been made.
And now was the ti to make the second one.
Yu i took out her phone and dialed her dad’s phone number.
Beep. Beep...beep.
Once the call was connected, Yu i cried as she delivered the news,
"Dad...dad...grandma died..."
Mr. Yu who was working on so matter was startled by the sudden news and asked,
"What? How did that happen?"
"She...she died because of excess anger....Yu Holea...she...she made grandma so angry, that grandma died..."
