...
Zhao Yi was feeling gloomy about the design acceptance work; it had been more than two weeks with no news, but luckily, a ssage finally ca through asking him to send the personnel involved in the design to co over.
The only ones from the Warhawk Special Research Group that could be sent were Lei Yong and Bao Enhong; he certainly couldn’t send himself.
Lei Yong and Bao Enhong quickly packed up and left for the headquarters of the Aviation Group. Their job was to assist the expert panel with the design acceptance.
Zhao Yi had only just arranged for Lei Yong and Bao Enhong’s matters when he received a call from Liu Hemin. He asked sowhat strangely, "Professor Liu, what’s the matter? What made you think to call ?"
"It’s about your business."
"Mine?"
"Yes, your Intelligent Control System, the design acceptance. The Aviation Group contacted to have a look, and I wanted to prepare in advance, so I called to ask you about it..."
Liu Hemin was candid.
Zhao Yi was shocked; it was the first ti he realized that Professor Liu Hemin had such thick skin. Although they had a pretty good relationship, to have his design report inspected and to then ask him personally to explain the key points beforehand?
This...
Sohow it didn’t feel quite right, did it?
"Don’t overthink it, I just wanted to ask in advance," Liu Hemin explained. "The Aviation Group is pushing hard for a quick completion of the acceptance. But for a system that is completely unfamiliar to , especially involving complex algorithms—you know it’s not easy to grasp."
"I wouldn’t know..."
Zhao Yi wanted to utter these words but held back. Given his relationship with Liu Hemin and since it wouldn’t be a loss for him, it might even help speed up the acceptance.
So, he spent several hours explaining to Liu Hemin, going into detail on so of the more difficult aspects.
Liu Hemin listened and took notes like a student attending an online class, thinking he would cross-reference them later for a ticulous understanding, to quickly grasp the challenging parts when inspecting the report during acceptance.
Finally, the explanation was over.
Zhao Yi felt exhausted, and Liu Hemin felt the sa. When they ended the video call, Liu Hemin did not forget to ask, "By the way, are you going to attend this year’s math conference?"
"The math conference?"
Zhao Yi just rembered that there was an International Maths Union conference this year. The last ti he attended was just before going to university when he received The Nevanlinna Prize representing mathematical computation.
Now, he was about to graduate from college, so he should probably be getting the Fields dal, right?
After careful consideration, Zhao Yi shook his head and said, "Probably not, my work is very busy, and I don’t have ti to travel to India. Moreover, I feel it’s not appropriate for to go abroad."
In the past, he never had this feeling since he was only doing theoretical research, and normal activities wouldn’t target him by foreign governnts. However, after being involved in many national major research and developnt projects, the situation might be different. Internal confidentiality might not always be effective, and traveling to other countries would be risky.
This made Zhao Yi feel quite relieved, as he was sowhat of a ’hobody’ and didn’t want to travel far for anything that wasn’t very important. He would rather stay at Yanhua University, in an environnt and lifestyle he found comfortable.
"That’s true!"
Liu Hemin nodded in agreent, believing that Zhao Yi wasn’t suited to go abroad.
Although he didn’t know how many national projects Zhao Yi had participated in, he knew of a few, such as material research and satellite transmission system theoretical research. Not to ntion major national projects, the discovery of Tianqing Protein alone, which was public knowledge, involved huge economic interests.
After ending the video call, Zhao Yi opened his personal email to check, and there he saw an invitation from the International Maths Union, inviting him to attend the International Mathematicians Conference in Hyderabad, India.
He then wrote a letter of decline, essentially saying, "I am really too busy with work lately to attend the conference in India, and I deeply regret this."
India, Hyderabad.
The International Mathematicians Conference was to convene in a month and a half, and so people had already arrived in Hyderabad in advance. The local governnt of Hyderabad and the Indian branch of the Maths Union were also starting to prepare for the conference.
An office building around the Hyderabad Central Square beca the workplace for the mbers of the Maths Union, with everyone busy preparing for the organization of the Mathematicians Conference.
An employee responsible for sending invitations to important VIP guests suddenly exclaid in surprise, "Guess whose email I’ve received?"
"Whose?"
Quite a few people in the office looked over.
"Zhao Yi!"
"Zhao Yi? The Zhao Yi from China? What did he say?" Several people gathered around.
"He regrets that he cannot attend the conference..."
Soone read it aloud.
The others were stunned. Anyone who followed international mathematics knew that this year’s Fields dal would definitely be awarded to Zhao Yi; he didn’t even have any competitors.
The Goldbach Conjecture, Fermat’s Last Theorem, three-dinsional wave motion graphs, weakening the Conjecture on Twin Pris...
And so on.
In front of this host of top mathematical achievents, any famous mathematician would be overshadowed, never able to accomplish any single one in their lifeti.
And now Zhao Yi said he wouldn’t attend?
Since its inception, there seed to have never been a precedent for a recipient of the Fields dal not to be present, especially this year when Zhao Yi was likely the sole awardee. What were they supposed to do during the award ceremony?
