Monday morning, Micah woke up early after a restless sleep. All night, he had dread of Leo hunting him down while he tried to protect Darcy. He sat up groggily, his eyes barely open. Today was orientation day, and Darcy was waiting.

He brushed through his silver hair quickly and splashed cold water on his face. Putting on his glasses, Micah glanced in the mirror, sowhat pleased with the result. He looked at least half-human now, finally shedding the zombie look from his sleepless night.

He wore a hoodie, grabbed his bag, and stepped into the hallway. The clatter of dishes from the kitchen said breakfast was already prepared. All the Ramsy family, except Micah, were early risers.

He entered the dining room, catching all the Ramsy family off guard.

Elina raised an eyebrow. "Morning. I thought I would have to drag you out of bed today."

Micah pulled out a chair and sat down. "I am picking up my friend first, then heading to the university."

"You don’t need one of us to co with you?" Jacob asked hopefully, lowering the newspaper and setting it aside.

"Nah, I am grown up. I don’t need you to babysit ," Micah said while reaching for an olette roll and biting into it hungrily. He was famished. Leo’s words had been a false alarm, luckily. But he had not eaten properly last night, having lost his appetite due to anxiety.

"Okay..." Jacob’s shoulder slumped.

Micah paused and exchanged a questioning look with Elina.

"Your father thought maybe this ti he could help one of his children," she said with a knowing look.

"Last ti, for Aria and Willow, you went without !" Jacob protested, turning toward the other end of the table.

"Well, that’s not my fault; they don’t allow males inside the girls’ dormitory," Elina replied coolly, picking up her coffee.

"What now? Why can’t I go see my son off at university?!" Jacob retorted.

"No one said you can’t. But Micah had already made plans with his friend. And besides, with your well-known reputation as CEO of Ramsy High Tech, do you want the senior students hanging off your car? You will turn him into the most talked-about gossip before orientation even starts. What help can you give him?!" Elina said.

Micah chewed slowly on his breakfast, totally ignoring the conversation.

Willow, seated beside Aria and scrolling through a docunt, took a sip from her coffee and said, "We all can go to his graduation. That’s fair, right?"

With that, the conversation ended. But Micah felt the food lost its taste. When he graduated, these people would not be his family anymore....

They were kind to him now. Laughing, fussing over him, nagging. But they weren’t his. Not truly. When the truth about the swap broke, when the real son returned, what would be left for him?

The thought struck him harder than expected. Micah blinked once, then suddenly pushed his chair back.

"Hey," Aria jumped. "You scared the life out of ! What’s the rush?"

"I am afraid I will be late," Micah muttered, avoiding everyone’s eyes.

Elina looked up from her mug, her lips twitching into a smile. "Are you sure it’s not because of your friend?!"

Micah didn’t respond. He was done with that conversation. He just waved vaguely and grabbed his suitcase. As he left, the front door clicked behind him.

"See! I told you! He ran off the mont I brought up his friend." Elina said aningfully.

"Mum, why are you sure it’s him again?" Aria asked.

"Has your brother had any other friends?!"

"No..." Aria nodded and looked at the closed door.

Outside, Driver Dan, already waiting beside the low-key car, took the suitcase from him without a word.

"To Munster Road," Micah said, sliding into the back seat.

The ride was smooth, the city was just beginning to wake up, and there was no traffic. When they turned to Darcy’s neighbourhood, sothing caught his eye.

"Pull aside!" he barked.

The car stopped, and Micah leaned forward, squinting through the windshield. His heart skipped.

He watched as Darcy stood on the sidewalk, suitcase at his feet, facing a man Micah recognised imdiately. Silas Durant.

Micah’s heart clenched. His hand on the door handle tightened. His first instinct was to jump out, putting distance between them, but he hesitated. Not because of fear. No...

This was the first ti he had stumbled on a scene where the protagonist, aka Darcy, t one of the male leads.

He wasn’t sure about the pull of the plot. Sothing he had read in novels where the world’s consciousness forced the protagonist and male leads together. What if he worked his ass off to keep them apart, only to find it was for nothing once Darcy t them? What if Darcy ended up attracted to them, even taking their side?!

Micah leaned toward the window and slowly rolled it down. It was better first to listen to their conversation and gauge Darcy’s attitude toward Silas.

anwhile, Darcy was losing his patience. He had clearly just stepped out to et Micah when Silas blocked his way.

"I apologise, but I needed to see you," Silas said, his voice tense. "I think there has been a misunderstanding. I never told anyone to hold back your mother’s dicine."

Micah scoffed inwardly. Yeah, right. How could he lie with such conviction?!

Darcy wore the neutral expression he always had when dealing with people. "I wasn’t the one who reported your family company. I have always been grateful for your help all these years. But in this situation, I don’t have any say in it."

Hearing Darcy’s words, Micah’s hanging heart finally settled a bit. Darcy didn’t behave like those foolish protagonists, readily believing whatever the male lead said.

Reading the novel, Micah had gaped when he saw Silas had feelings for Darcy from the mont he saw him. How disgusting. Lust after a minor. Silas had power and influence over his mother’s well-being, and clearly had used both to get close. A predator dresses in generosity. If Micah hadn’t stepped in, Darcy might have been isolated enough to fall into the trap like in the novel and beg the man to help him access the rare dicine.

And after being exhausted ntally and emotionally, Darcy surely would seek comfort from soone who had helped him most of the ti. No, he deserved better than people who take advantage of his weakest monts.

Darcy wasn’t as tough as it seed now in the book. Maybe, there was hope...

Back on the sidewalk, Silas took a step forward. "But you moved your mother to another hospital ..."

"Yes," Darcy said, his voice calm but chilly, "because I didn’t want my mother caught in the crossfire. I was afraid your enemies might target her next."

Micah stared at Silas. He looked frustrated now, his jaw twitching.

It was evident that he wanted to press harder, not letting Darcy slip from his grasp.

The man stood rigid and upright. No hint of guilt or remorse in his voice. His eyes were cold.

But to deal with soone like him, it was better to step back. Too much involvent, even anger, might make the man more infatuated with Darcy.

Silas’s eyes dropped to the suitcase. "Are you heading to the dorms? I can give you a lift."

"No need. I arranged for soone to pick up." Darcy replied without hesitation.

Silas’s phone buzzed, then rang. He glanced at it, clearly irritated. "I was being held up in the hospital. If you need any help, you know how to reach ."

"Unm," Darcy responded flatly.

Silas gave a curt nod to Darcy and turned, already raising the phone to his ear.

Micah watched as his figure disappeared, thinking that soon he would make sure Darcy never had to deal with soone like him again.

There was no hint of chemistry between them, no giddy behaviour on Darcy’s part. Everything showed Micah could change the storyline in the novel.
