The freezer hated nad witnesses.

Ty could tell because the fog changed direction.

It had been rolling around their ankles, cold and slow, pretending to be weather. After Jade's answer hit the consent field, the fog pulled backward under the freezer drawers and vanished through the seams.

Every drawer clicked shut.

Except B-3.

The folder on the empty tray shook like a thing trying to swallow a bone.

M-17 glowed at the bottom of the page.

JJ read the update from her panel, one hand pressed over her mouth.

"Jade says the signature was copied."

"That is not a legal category," the freezer speaker said.

The voice ca from overhead, stripped of Zunoder's warmth. It sounded like a hospital answering machine after midnight. Flat. Cheap. Tired of humans.

Heissman looked up at the vent. "There you are. The great monster of civilization. Administrative audio."

"Unrecognized comntary," the speaker said.

"Yes, that is a common reaction."

Omina lifted her cuffs. "Identify clerk M-17."

The folder snapped shut.

REQUEST EXCEEDS REMOVAL EVENT SCOPE.

Yun-Jin's sword tip touched the drawer handle.

"It has a scope?"

"Everything dangerous has a scope," Omina said. "The trick is making it admit the edges."

Ty opened his left hand.

The missing finger lay across his palm. It had gone still after Jade's ssage. The stillness bothered him. He had gotten used to its anger. Quiet felt like pain saving strength.

He touched it to the folder.

The freezer speaker buzzed.

"Specin contact prohibited."

Ty pressed harder.

"It is not your specin."

"Subject material logged under deceased handling."

"I am standing here."

"Subject presentation conflicts with file."

JJ made a strangled sound. "Wow. I want to throw sothing heavy."

Heissman looked around. "We are in a morgue. Let us keep heavy throwing taphorical."

The folder opened again.

Two options printed across the page.

ACCEPT ERGENCY CONTACT CONSENT.

CONTEST ERGENCY CONTACT AUTHORITY.

Ty stared at the second line until the trap showed itself.

JJ saw it next.

"If you contest Jade's authority, it makes it look like she never had the right to speak for you at all."

"And if he accepts it," Omina said, "Zunoder uses copied grief as consent."

Yun-Jin's grip tightened. "So both lines are teeth."

Heissman gave the page a sour look. "Predatory binary options. The spiritual ancestor of bad software updates."

The speaker said, "Choose."

Ty held still.

The freezer waited.

This ti, he let it wait long enough to beco nervous.

The light above B-3 flickered twice.

"Choose," the speaker repeated.

Ty looked at the lines again. Jade had said the useful thing: I signed sothing, but not that. The room wanted him to attack one half of her truth so it could use the other.

He picked up the cheap pen still tucked into the folder spine.

Omina's cuffs ward. "Outside the boxes."

"Yes."

Ty wrote under both options.

COPIED FIELD REQUIRES COPY WITNESS.

The paper froze under the ink.

Then it tried to reject the sentence.

JJ slapped her hand down beside Ty's before the page could curl. "Sponsor witness backs that. You do not get to make him pick between blaming Jade and letting you eat her signature."

"Sponsor authority not attached to hospital consent," the speaker said.

"Good," JJ said. "Then I am not consenting. I am witnessing you being gross."

Heissman leaned over the page.

"Expert witness supports the objection. An ergency contact may identify, receive property, and authorize ordinary disposition under certain policies. Tissue removal after unusual post-mortem motor response is not ordinary, and copying a field is not consent. Please record my disdain as supplental material."

The pen in Ty's hand dragged itself toward Heissman's statent.

The freezer hated it, but it wrote.

Omina lifted two fingers.

"Forr command witness requires clerk identification for chain challenge. Badge M-17 is now material."

The speaker clicked.

For one second, the sound beca a person breathing too close to a microphone.

Then the hospital voice returned.

"Badge M-17 is an internal reference."

"Then reference it," Omina said.

"Employee privacy applies."

Yun-Jin laughed once.

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed her sword at the freezer bank. "It wants privacy after cutting a dead man's finger off."

JJ's eyes went bright with anger. "Yeah. No. Absolutely no."

The page fluttered.

EMPLOYEE PRIVACY APPLIES.

Ty wrote underneath.

DEAD PERSON PRIVACY ALSO APPLIES.

Heissman's mouth opened.

For once, he needed a mont.

"I am very proud and deeply uncomfortable."

The freezer corridor groaned.

The drawers shook in their fras.

The speaker tried to say choose again. It failed halfway through the word.

The folder printed a third option.

REQUEST NAD COPY WITNESS.

Ty circled it.

The paper accepted the circle because it had no prepared reason not to.

M-17 stretched across the page, then split.

MARA WHITLOCK

NIGHT RECORDS ASSISTANT

STATUS: LIVING

LAST KNOWN: REDACTED

JJ let out a breath she had been saving. "Living. Good. Living is good."

"For witnesses, yes," Heissman said. "For us, statistically inconsistent."

The speaker crackled.

"Nad employee unavailable."

Omina's eyes narrowed. "Unavailable is not dead."

"Nad employee unavailable."

"Unavailable where?"

The freezer lights cut out.

Darkness hit the corridor, but Ty still saw. Blue fire reflected off every drawer label. Each one carried Jade's na for half a second.

Then every label changed.

MARA WHITLOCK.

MARA WHITLOCK.

MARA WHITLOCK.

Yun-Jin stepped backward toward JJ. "That is too many."

The freezer speaker returned with a different voice.

Young. Female. Shaking.

"This is not enough consent."

The line repeated from every drawer.

"This is not enough consent."

JJ pressed both hands over her ears. "Stop making her say it."

Ty walked to the drawer nearest him and slamd his fist against the tal.

"Na her once."

The echo cut off.

The speaker crackled.

Zunoder's voice slipped through the static.

"Careful, Bone Half. If she rembers, she rembers who stood beside her."

The vent above B-3 frosted black.

Ty looked up.

Sothing moved beyond the grate. Not Zunoder's hand this ti. A strip of paper slid down, slow and deliberate, until it hung in the air.

It was a copy of Jade's signature.

Below it sat Mara Whitlock's old badge number.

Below that, a third mark.

Black circle. Twelve small cuts around the edge.

Erebos.

Heissman whispered, "Oh, wonderful. The abyss kept office hours."

Omina's face went hard.

"The clerk was not alone."

The missing finger in Ty's palm bent toward the black mark.

Then it scratched one word into his bone.

GAP.

Ty closed his hand around it.

"Find Mara," he said.

JJ looked at the vent, at the paper, then at him.

"Before Zunoder?"

Ty's fire burned hotter.

"Before she has to rember alone."
