The black drawer opened where B-3's back wall should have been.
It refused the clean slide of hospital equipnt and breathed open like a mouth trying to rember being furniture.
Inside, the tal was dark and dry. No frost. No body sll. No tile. A narrow shelf ran through the space beyond the drawer, just wide enough for one person at a ti. The walls on either side were lined with specin labels, all blank except for one word stamped over and over in fading ink.
TRANSFER.
Ty looked into the dark.
The missing finger bent toward it.
JJ grabbed his wrist. "Before you do the thing you are absolutely about to do, can we enjoy for half a second that Mara's paper worked?"
Ty glanced at the consent page.
The copied signature had cracked. Mara's note sat over it now, ugly and stubborn.
CONTACT SIGNATURE COPIED FROM PROPERTY RELEASE.
INSUFFICIENT FOR TISSUE REMOVAL.
REQUIRES NAD WITNESS.
"Half a second," Ty said.
JJ counted under her breath.
"One. Good. Done. Now we can enter the wall drawer like rational adults."
Yun-Jin gave her a look. "That helped you?"
"No, but I deserved to say it."
Omina studied the black opening. Her cuffs gave no approval and no warning. That was sohow worse.
"This is not hospital jurisdiction anymore."
Heissman leaned toward the opening, then imdiately leaned back. "It feels like a place where jurisdiction goes to beco an ingredient."
The freezer speaker crackled.
Mara's recorded voice ca through first.
"This is not enough consent."
Then Jade's.
"I gave Ty away to no one."
The black drawer pulsed once, as if both statents had weight.
Ty stepped onto the shelf.
The dark accepted him.
The others followed in a line: Yun-Jin, JJ, Omina, Heissman. The shelf held, though it had no visible supports. Behind them, B-3 shrank to a lit rectangle full of frost.
Ahead, a specin cup sat on a black pedestal.
The cup was empty.
Ty stopped.
JJ bumped into Yun-Jin's back and whispered an apology that sounded more like a threat.
The empty cup had a label.
HAMBERTON, TYRONE
RIGHT HAND DIGIT SPECIN
TRANSFERRED TO GAP HOLD
CURRENT MATERIAL STATUS: ABSENT
The finger in Ty's palm scratched hard enough to send blue sparks between his bones.
ABSENT, it wrote.
"We can see that," JJ said.
The finger scratched again.
NOT ABSENT.
Heissman took a slow breath. "How invigorating. The bone is correcting ontology."
Ty looked around the shelf.
The walls of labels seed flat at first. Then one moved. A label peeled from the left wall and drifted toward the empty cup.
PROPERTY OF BODY.
Another peeled free.
PROPERTY OF HOSPITAL.
Another.
PROPERTY OF SIGNER.
Another.
PROPERTY OF FACE.
Yun-Jin cut the last label before it reached the cup.
It split in two and bled black ink.
Zunoder laughed from the far end of the shelf.
He stood where the black route bent out of sight. Ty's old body looked almost healthy again, which made the damaged places worse. The face had repaired enough for public grief. The eyes had not. They watched the empty cup with hunger too sharp to hide.
"You always cut the part that tells the truth," Zunoder said to Yun-Jin.
She lifted her sword. "I cut the part standing near my friend."
"Loyalty. The most decorative kind of misunderstanding."
Ty moved one step.
Omina's voice stopped him.
"He wants speed."
Zunoder smiled. "She says that because she has no body at stake."
Omina's stare held. "I have commanded enough bodies into graves to know when soone is trying to borrow urgency."
JJ made a small sound. "That was almost comforting and then violently not."
Zunoder's attention moved to her.
"Sponsor. Does he tell you what he is spending?"
"Usually after," JJ said.
"And you still fund him?"
"I have poor taste and excellent spite."
The empty cup rang once.
Zunoder extended his hand.
Labels rushed toward him instead of the cup.
PROPERTY OF BODY wrapped around his wrist.
PROPERTY OF FACE slid up his forearm.
PROPERTY OF SIGNER hovered near his throat, bright with Jade's copied na.
Ty felt the missing finger try to leap from his palm.
He held it.
Zunoder watched the motion. "You already have the private argunt. I only need the public one."
"You do not get either."
"Earth removed it from the body before you beca Bone Half. Hospital chain beats afterlife drama."
Heissman clapped once, very softly.
Zunoder's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
"Apologies. I briefly admired the efficiency of the lie. A miserable habit. Please continue giving material to hate."
Zunoder stepped closer.
"The girl signed. The clerk processed. The hospital removed. Erebos witnessed the gap. I stand in the body that lost the piece. Tell the room which part belongs to a skeleton who arrived late."
The shelf tightened under Ty's feet.
There it was. The clean story. The kind frightened people liked because it had order. The girl signed. The clerk processed. The hospital removed. The body lost. The body claims.
JJ's hand found Ty's elbow from behind.
"He is trying to make you say Jade did it."
"I know."
"Please do not do the noble idiot version where you say nothing because you're scared of hurting her."
Ty looked at the labels around Zunoder's arm.
"I am thinking."
"That is new and alarming."
The missing finger scratched one word into his palm.
WITNESS.
Ty lifted his hand.
Zunoder's smile thinned.
"Small bone. Small vote."
The finger bent toward the empty cup.
The cup label changed.
HAMBERTON, TYRONE
RIGHT HAND DIGIT SPECIN
REMOVAL CONTESTED
SPECIN SELF-ASSERTION ON RECORD
The labels around Zunoder's wrist tightened, then loosened.
Omina seized the opening.
"Forr command witness objects to body-priority claim. Removed material asserted against face user before current transfer."
JJ raised her panel.
"Sponsor witness objects. No ownership transfer from copied grief."
Heissman pointed at the cup.
"Expert witness objects. A body may have priority in ordinary remains disputes. This is not ordinary, and I will physically fight the next person who implies it is."
Yun-Jin stepped beside Ty.
"Ard witness objects. The face is hungry."
The black shelf shook.
Zunoder's expression cracked open, and the hunger inside it looked older than his na.
"Careful," he said.
Ty held the finger over the cup.
"Jade signed grief. Mara refused removal. Erebos signed the gap. You signed nothing."
Blue fire dropped from his palm into the empty cup.
The cup filled with light.
No flesh appeared. No easy replacent. Instead, the light ford the shape of a finger in absence, a record of where the piece had been and where it had refused to remain.
The wall labels burned.
PROPERTY OF BODY beca BODY CLAIM: PARTIAL.
PROPERTY OF SIGNER beca COPIED FIELD: INVALID FOR REMOVAL.
PROPERTY OF FACE beca FACE USER: NO PRIORITY.
Zunoder lunged.
Ty t him halfway.
Bone struck stolen flesh in the narrow space. The shelf buckled and held. Zunoder's hand closed around Ty's wrist, trying to force the missing finger toward his own palm.
For one breath, Ty felt the old body.
Warm blood. Human grip. A pulse that should have belonged to him.
Zunoder whispered, close enough for the words to scrape through Ty's skull.
"You will keep losing pieces because you refuse to hate the people who failed you."
Ty drove his forehead into his old face.
The crack sounded honest.
"They failed . You are using it."
Zunoder stumbled back.
Yun-Jin's sword ca between them, and Omina's cuffs flared green around the cup.
The black pedestal split open.
Under the empty cup, carved into the shelf, sat Erebos's mark.
Black circle.
Twelve cuts.
One line of text burned beneath it.
GAP SIGNED AFTER HUMAN ERROR.
Heissman went quiet.
JJ read the line twice.
Zunoder looked at it and smiled again, but the smile had lost its polish.
"Then he was here first."
Ty looked at the mark.
The missing finger went cold in his palm.
"No," Omina said.
Everyone looked at her.
Her cuffs burned brighter.
"He arrived after the mistake. That is not first. That is opportunistic."
The mark heard her.
The black drawer began to close.
Zunoder stepped backward with it, pulled by the route beyond the bend.
"Then hurry, Bone Half. Prove the difference before he signs the next one."
The drawer swallowed him.
The empty cup remained, filled with blue absence.
Then the shelf dropped.
