Chapter 521: Chapter 492: Visiting in Person
Zhang Hengyang knew that Xu Chunliang would stir up trouble, but he didn’t expect him to cause such a huge storm. The Da Heng Group Weishan Island Division was ordered to suspend operations for rectification, and this news has been widely reported by major financial channels.
The headquarters also learned about this matter and directly sought out Zhang Hengyang to hold him accountable, giving him a strict order to resolve this issue during the holiday.
Zhang Hengyang understood very well that the crisis caused by the previous rights protection incident had barely settled. Now, with this new issue, the higher-ups were already very dissatisfied with him personally. If he handled this improperly, he might not be able to keep his position as the general manager of the East China Region.
Zhang Hengyang realized he had underestimated Xu Chunliang’s destructive power. Initially, he thought that a temporary deputy town mayor couldn’t do much, but as soon as Xu Chunliang arrived on Weishan Island, he wreaked havoc on Hua Nian and Da Heng.
The most headache-inducing part was that this guy did things without following any rules.
This turmoil started with Mrs. Jiang’s suicide, and Liu Jiaqi reported it to him immediately. Zhang Hengyang told her not to shy away from trouble, but also not to invite it without reason.
Looking back now, he realized that he had been too careless. Many times, even if you don’t seek trouble, it will find you.
Zhang Hengyang wanted to contact Xu Chunliang to communicate, but after picking up the phone, he changed his mind. Xu Chunliang was just a deputy town mayor; without Qin Zhengyang’s instructions, he couldn’t have acted this way.
After careful consideration, Zhang Hengyang decided to personally go to Dongzhou to visit Qin Zhengyang. Some things are better said face-to-face as they can’t be clarified over the phone.
Qin Zhengyang lived in the Dongzhou Bell Tower District. His wife, Li Wenjing, was the principal of the Qingchun Road Primary School, reputed to be the best in Dongzhou. One could say in Dongzhou, Li Wenjing’s presence was much stronger than Qin Zhengyang’s.
This wasn’t Zhang Hengyang’s first visit. He got connected to Qin Zhengyang through Li Wenjing.
The best way to get to know someone is to seek their help. Zhang Hengyang’s sister and her husband both worked at the Dongzhou Engineering Machinery Factory. They wanted their son to attend Qingchun Road Primary School. Since they weren’t within the district’s scope, Zhang Hengyang used his connections to resolve his nephew’s admission issue.
During the real estate boom, properties like Dongzhou’s were hard to come by. Li Wenjing and her husband took a liking to Sunshine Riverside developed by Da Heng. To reciprocate their favor, Zhang Hengyang helped Li Wenjing secure a satisfactory property at an employee discount, all based on mutual benefit.
That’s how he came to know Li Wenjing. At the time, Qin Zhengyang was not particularly noteworthy, until he was transferred to serve as the deputy town mayor of Hu Shan Town. Only then did Zhang Hengyang realize he was the husband of Principal Li.
It wasn’t long after Qin Zhengyang went to Hu Shan Town that he became the top official.
Zhang Hengyang had already anticipated it. With Qin Zhengyang’s father-in-law in charge of organization and personnel in Dongzhou, staying stagnant would have been surprising.
When Zhang Hengyang arrived, both Qin Zhengyang and his wife were home. Li Wenjing was helping their son with his homework.
This wasn’t Zhang Hengyang’s first visit. Qin Zhengyang opened the door for him and invited him in; this was the house that Zhang Hengyang had helped them secure.
Zhang Hengyang handed the gift he brought to Qin Zhengyang.
Qin Zhengyang said, "If I had known you were bringing a gift, I wouldn’t have let you come over."
Zhang Hengyang replied, "I didn’t buy much, just a learning device for my little nephew."
Qin Zhengyang glanced into the bag; it was a new IPAD Pro, and he thought about giving it back to Zhang Hengyang later.
Zhang Hengyang wanted to change shoes, but Qin Zhengyang indicated it wasn’t necessary because the house had tile floors.
Zhang Hengyang insisted on changing them anyway.
Hearing the commotion, Li Wenjing came out of the room and smiled, "President Zhang, what brings you here on such a gusty day?"
Zhang Hengyang said, "I was visiting Dongzhou for work, so I stopped by to pay respects to both of you at the start of the year."
Li Wenjing said, "You two sit, I’ll go make some tea."
"No need to bother!" said Zhang Hengyang, following Qin Zhengyang into the living room.
In fact, Li Wenjing was three years older than Qin Zhengyang, fitting the old saying, ’A woman three years older is a gold brick in her embrace.’ How many gold bricks Qin Zhengyang had embraced was unknown, but ever since he got married, his career had been going smoothly.
Qin Zhengyang knew very well the purpose of Zhang Hengyang’s visit and said with a smile, "You must have something important to discuss today."
Zhang Hengyang sighed and said, "Secretary Qin, Da Heng has been around for so long, and this is the first time a sales office was ordered to close. I don’t think there’s another example across the country."
Unless a developer voluntarily shuts down, I don’t think there’s a precedent for a local government ordering a closure.
Qin Zhengyang said, "We’re under a lot of pressure too. Currently, leaders at all levels pay close attention to public opinion. Once it arouses public attention, the first to bear responsibility is the relevant person in charge. After last time’s Da Heng Hot Spring Town refund rights protection event, I was severely reprimanded by higher-ups. To be honest, since then, I’ve been on edge; as long as your project isn’t delivered, I can’t be at ease."
"Rest assured, Secretary Qin, I will ensure the Weishan Island project is done well whether it’s from a public or private perspective. You know the recent situation; it’s not just us at Da Heng; most domestic real estate companies are facing problems. Our situation is already challenging, and even if you don’t plan on giving us a hand up, you don’t have to rub salt into the wound, do you?" Zhang Hengyang still had some resentment in his heart, being ordered to close shop during the New Year was not a good omen.
Qin Zhengyang said, "I’ve already fully understood how everything transpired. It shouldn’t be considered rubbing salt into the wound; some of your employees lacked humanity in handling issues. If your staff had been more attentive to Mrs. Jiang’s emotional changes and more considerate of the homebuyers, perhaps a tragedy could have been avoided."
Zhang Hengyang said, "The situation has been thoroughly investigated. The reason Mrs. Jiang committed suicide was entirely due to being subjected to emotional abuse at home, feeling no warmth from her family. This has no direct connection with us at Da Heng. We didn’t refuse to refund her house; Da Heng has always valued consumer rights. Her death was a complete accident with multiple causes, and we’re just one factor among many. It’s unfair to put all the blame on us."
Li Wenjing came over with the freshly washed tea set.
Zhang Hengyang smiled and said, "Principal Li, please don’t trouble yourself."
Li Wenjing said, "It’s no trouble at all; even if you weren’t here, I would still serve Secretary Qin tea."
Zhang Hengyang laughed heartily, "I truly envy you two, such a heavenly couple."
Qin Zhengyang said, "Principal Li is criticizing me; I promise to perform well and do more housework in the future."
Li Wenjing said, "You’re busy with official duties; you don’t need to worry about such trivial domestic chores. Just spend more time with your son when you can." She sat on the sofa beside them, personally brewed the tea, and handed over the prepared tea.
Zhang Hengyang took a sip of black tea, "Does Principal Li like drinking black tea?"
Li Wenjing said, "I usually don’t drink tea, but Zhengyang likes it, so I taught myself some tea ceremony. It doesn’t really count as a tea ceremony, I just follow the book, not as a professional would."
Zhang Hengyang said, "Principal Li, you have it quite tough, managing both home and school."
Qin Zhengyang said, "Marrying Wenjing is my fortune."
Li Wenjing laughed, "Spare me the mushy praises, and don’t use me as a topic between you two. If you think I’m inconvenient here, I’ll leave after making the tea."
Zhang Hengyang said, "I didn’t mean it that way, and there’s nothing to hide. I’m here to ask Secretary Qin for a favor."
Li Wenjing gave Qin Zhengyang a glance. She seldom spoke about work issues, especially in front of outsiders.
Qin Zhengyang said, "It’s not a big deal, the new deputy mayor shut down Da Heng’s sales office."
From this sentence of Qin Zhengyang’s, Zhang Hengyang received a message: Qin Zhengyang didn’t claim any involvement in the matter, implying that he was unaware, and it was all Xu Chunliang’s doing.
Zhang Hengyang said, "Secretary Qin, I hereby express my stance. We will immediately make improvements where leaders point out deficiencies. I will personally handle this matter, dealing severely with the responsible individuals. I only hope Secretary Qin shows leniency; the sales office cannot be shut down. If this issue continues escalating, negative news will soon spread everywhere. Da Heng is a listed company, and if this affects the stock price, I won’t be able to explain to the board of directors."
Qin Zhengyang said, "President Zhang, don’t worry, I will communicate with Comrade Chunliang to strive to resolve this issue properly."
Hearing this, Zhang Hengyang sensed there was room for negotiation. He finished his cup of tea and said, "Then I leave it in your hands, Secretary Qin. During the New Year holidays, I apologize for the disturbance. I still have to rush back to the company to convene a meeting and demand thorough self-inspection from top to bottom. We must heed the lessons from this incident."
Qin Zhengyang didn’t try to dissuade him, seeing him off to the door, and returning the gift Zhang Hengyang had brought.
Zhang Hengyang said, "A New Year gift for the child."
Qin Zhengyang said, "If you really want me to help solve this matter, you have to take it back, otherwise, I truly won’t handle it."
Seeing how cautious Qin Zhengyang was, Zhang Hengyang realized that someone like him, who was in an upward phase, was unlikely to stumble on such issues. Zhang Hengyang was testing the waters; if Qin Zhengyang accepted, he would increase the stakes next time, as he would have more opportunities to seek Qin Zhengyang’s assistance in the future.
Zhang Hengyang had no choice but to take back the gift and let the couple stay where they were.
After Zhang Hengyang left, Li Wenjing said, "Shutting down the sales office? You folks at Hu Shan Town certainly dare to be the trailblazers."
Qin Zhengyang said with amusement, "It wasn’t my idea; it was the new deputy mayor Xu Chunliang."
Li Wenjing said, "Mei Ru Xue’s boyfriend?"
Qin Zhengyang nodded, "He just arrived at Hu Shan Town, and I handed this issue to him to see him go through some challenges, and also to test his problem-solving abilities."
Li Wenjing sat down and drank a cup of tea, softly saying, "What did Zhang Hengyang give?"
Qin Zhengyang told her it was a tablet computer. Li Wenjing said, "It was right to return it to him; many people seemingly give tablets, but the box is filled with money. You must always keep a clear mind. If you want to go far, you can’t care about these small favors. If you stumble, all your previous hard work and efforts will be for nothing."
