The judge struck the gavel, and after a thudding sound, the court hearing officially began.
The first witness for the prosecution was a maid.
The prosecutor said, “Witness, please briefly describe what happened that day.”
As it was a prosecution case and they had spoken in court many tis before, the witness was very calm and spoke very clearly.
“It was a little after eight o’clock in the evening. I had finished my work and was watching television in my room when I heard the master and mistress arguing in the living room. Afterwards, there was silence outside. When I ca out, I saw… the living room floor was covered in blood, and the mistress was lying in a pool of it. The master was opening the door, attempting to flee.”
“What did you do then?” the prosecutor asked.
The witness replied, “I was terrified. The mistress’s head was gone, and blood was everywhere. I imdiately called the police.”
“Are you certain that the person you saw was Mr. Edward Carter, the defendant sitting over there?” the prosecutor asked again.
“Yes, I’m certain.”
“How long have you worked as a maid for the Carter family?”
“A year and a half.”
“A year and a half, so you must be very familiar with Mr. Edward Carter and the deceased, Ms. Nadia Cory, and there’s no chance you could have mistaken soone else for them?”
“Yes.”
The prosecutor nodded and looked towards the judge, “Your Honor, I have finished my questioning.”
The judge looked at Purple Sumrs, “Please proceed with the cross-examination, defense attorney.”
Purple Sumrs stood up, and with that, the atmosphere of the courtroom changed.
The facts of the case were very clear, and now, all eyes were on how Purple Sumrs would defend Edward Carter.
“What exactly was your job at the Carter residence?” Purple Sumrs asked gently, “I know there are many types of maids, such as those who clean, cook, garden…”
The maid replied, “I was responsible for preparing lunch and dinner. Usually, after making dinner, I had to clean the entire kitchen and then I could rest for a while. If the mistress didn’t want a late-night snack at nine, I was off work.”
“Only the mistress?” Purple Sumrs asked, “Didn’t Mr. Edward Carter want a late-night snack?”
“The master often didn’t co ho at night.”
Purple Sumrs shrugged, “It seems like their relationship was quite poor, with frequent overnight absences and argunts, wasn’t it?”
“Yes, the master had many affair partners outside; it’s no secret…” the maid gave a sheepish smile, “Either he didn’t co ho, or when he did, it was only to argue with the mistress.”
“Did you stay in your room during every argunt?” Purple Sumrs asked.
“Yes,” the maid nodded. “After all, it was nothing to be proud of. I’m just a servant, and ddling would only cost my job.”
Purple Sumrs asked, “Do you rember what they were arguing about that night?”
“I couldn’t hear clearly,” the maid shook her head. “I was watching TV, and my room is quite far from the living room.”
Purple Sumrs said, “You didn’t clearly hear the voices, and when you ca out, you only saw the back of the person committing the act. So, is it correct to understand that you actually aren’t sure if the man fleeing was my client, Mr. Edward Carter?”
“Objection!” the prosecutor stood up. “I object to the defense attorney leading the witness.”
Imdiately, Purple Sumrs said, “Your Honor, this witness is the only eyewitness to the murder, and she didn’t see the face of the assailant throughout the entire event! I believe it’s necessary to question further!”
After a mont’s reflection, the judge said, “Objection overruled, the defense attorney may continue.”
“Thank you, Your Honor.” Purple Sumrs smiled, then turned her attention back to the maid in the witness stand.
However, her ostensibly amiable smile appeared to the witness as the grin of a shark before feeding.
The witness visibly tensed up.
In the gallery, Second Young Master Graves whispered to Gavin Graves, “Brother, don’t you think Ms. Sumrs is a bit terrifying in court?”
Gavin Graves just smiled and said nothing.
