Chapter 464
In order to evolve the wyrmcaller, he once again needed to use the Creation Chamber. He focused on the wyrmcaller and ntally instructed it to enter the Creation Chamber. If the beast was displeased at the prospect of returning to the cramped quarters so soon after just getting out, it gave no sign. Once the chamber sealed shut around it, Jake got to work.
For the next several hours, he evolved the creature from one rank to the next. During each evolution cycle, he improved the creature’s characteristics. Special abilities could only be assigned to a creature during an evolution cycle, so he also imparted special abilities to the wyrmcaller at this stage.
The very first special ability he bestowed on the beast was Fleshport. Since this ability was Uncommon, he granted it during the initial evolution cycle when the wyrmcaller advanced from Common to Uncommon.
There were six rarity levels a creature could have: Common, Uncommon, Superior, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. If there were any beyond Legendary, Jake was unaware of them. The rarity level determined how many special abilities a creature could possess: none at Common, one at Uncommon, two at Superior, three at Rare, four at Epic, and five at Legendary.
So, basically, when a creature underwent an evolution from one rarity level to the next, an additional slot was unlocked, and each slot was one rarity level above the previous one. For example, an Uncommon slot allowed only an ability of the sa rarity to be placed in it; a Superior slot allowed an ability of Superior rarity or an Uncommon ability; a Rare slot could be used for a Rare ability or for one of the previous rarities, Superior or Uncommon.
In other words, a slot could be used either for an ability of the sa rarity level or of a lower rarity, but never for one of a higher rarity level. And sure enough, it was best to match a slot with an ability of equal rarity. Inserting, for instance, an Uncommon ability into a slot intended for a Superior ability would squander its full potential.
So, Jake put Fleshport into the wyrmcaller’s Uncommon slot. He then took a mont to think.
The purpose of this creature was to teleport other creatures from his lairs to Dead City. The idea was that several wyrmcallers would be constantly circling high above the city, beyond the reach of the nests.
When he needed help, for example, when fighting a particularly powerful ravagespawn or D, he would send a ntal command to the nearest wyrmcallers to descend from the skies and deploy combat units to the battlefield. After the battle, they would teleport the remaining combat units back to the safety of his lairs. The wyrmcallers themselves weren’t supposed to participate in any battles.
So, a wyrmcaller would definitely have to be able to replenish mana on its own, because opening a Transfer Maw to teleport it manually to one of his lairs every ti it needed mana would be inefficient and botherso. Jake preferred when his lairs and creatures could operate and fulfill their purposes in full autonomy, remaining entirely self-sufficient.
For that reason, during its evolution from Uncommon to the next rarity level, Superior, Jake bestowed Mana Absorption upon the wyrmcaller, which was a Superior ability.
Jake himself could locate mana clouds thanks to Mana Vision and absorb mana from them with the Mana Absorption perk. However, the Mana Absorption ability designed for his creatures worked like a combination of the two: it not only allowed a creature to locate a mana cloud but also to imdiately draw mana from it to replenish its own reserves.
Thus, Jake allocated Mana Absorption to the wyrmcaller’s Superior slot. With it, his wyrmcallers would be able to circle Dead City for as long as necessary, replenishing their mana reserves on their own without needing Jake’s intervention at all.
As he continued experinting with his cache of unique genetic materials, his relentless tinkering eventually paid off with the discovery of a remarkable new ability.
Na: Symbiotic rge (Rare)
Description: Allows you to rge with a creature possessing this ability and gain full control over its body. While controlling the creature, you cannot use your own abilities, but you have complete command of the creature’s abilities.
Success Probability: 33%
Proceed with Fusion: Y/N
It was an incredible ability! It ant that he wouldn’t have to ride a wyrmcaller when he needed to quickly traverse Dead City from one point to another, as he had initially planned. Instead, he would be able to summon the wyrmcaller closest to him and rge with it, taking control of its body.
He rembered that when deciding which of the three subclasses to pick, he had learned from watching the Corruptor preview that this subclass could indeed rge with its creations. Until now, Jake hadn’t been able to do so, and now he knew why: to accomplish that, he first needed to bestow a special ability upon a creature in order to rge with it.
And now he could do that. From this point forward, he would be able to rge with any of his creatures that had Symbiotic rge applied to them.
The success probability of unlocking this ability was only 33%, though. He figured that the higher the rarity level of an ability, the harder it was to unlock.
He spent so ti trying to improve those odds. Eventually, he managed to increase them to 62%, but no matter what other components he tried to add to the pairing, he couldn’t push the odds beyond that number.
So, he attempted to rge the components. And failed. Luckily, he had more of the sa genetic materials, so he tried again. The fusion failed once more, consuming the valuable components in the process.
Only on the third attempt was the fusion successful, and Symbiotic rge was unlocked at last.
He inserted it into the wyrmcaller’s Rare slot during the creature’s evolution from Superior to Rare. He then continued to evolve the creature from one rank to the next, improving its stats, until it reached the highest level of developnt achievable at present.
Jake finally released the wyrmcaller from the Creation Chamber and examined its stats.
Na: Wyrmcaller (Rare)
Rank: VIII
Size: Large
Strength: 74% (Rare)
Constitution: 68% (Rare)
Agility: 80% (Rare)
Intelligence: 80% (Rare)
Magick: 80% (Rare)
Special abilities: Fleshport (Uncommon), Mana Absorption (Superior), Symbiotic rge (Rare)
Jake knew that a creature’s stats were shown as percentages because they were asured against his own capabilities. However, these percentages reflected how a creature compared only to his base offensive and defensive stats. He had abilities like Adaptive Armor and Toxic Resistance that greatly enhanced his defensive capabilities, along with nurous combat abilities that significantly increased the power of his attacks.
His creatures, however, possessed none of these abilities, making their stats align only with his base defensive and offensive traits. Even so, since even his basic capabilities were already quite impressive, the Wyrmcaller should be a powerful creature. Several of its stats had been increased to favorable percentages, with so even reaching as high as 80%.
They couldn’t exceed that mark, as at Rank VIII, a creature’s maximum stats could not surpass that threshold. At least, for now.
He also knew it was impossible to increase every single attribute of a creature to the full 100%. He simply couldn’t develop a creature that excelled at everything. Enhancing one stat inevitably ca at the cost of another.
For example, when Strength was increased, Agility would go down sowhat. This trade-off ant that each creation had to be carefully tuned to fit its intended purpose.
In the case of the Wyrmcaller, Strength and Constitution weren’t very important, since it wasn’t ant to be a combat unit. Instead, it needed to be intelligent enough to outsmart its enemies and capable of managing the usage of mana with great caution.
For this reason, he had prioritized its Intelligence and Magick attributes during the evolution process. Speed was another critical factor. Since Agility dictated how fast a creature could react and move, Jake had pushed that attribute to its current maximum value.
He couldn’t evolve the Wyrmcaller to Rank IX yet because, to do so, he first needed to evolve the Creation Chamber to Rank IX. And to achieve that, he had to first evolve the Mana Core in the sa lair to that rank.
Additionally, there were two more rarity levels to reach: Epic and Legendary. However, he currently couldn’t evolve the Wyrmcaller from Rare to Epic, or any of his creatures, for that matter. This was because in order to evolve any creature to Epic, that rarity level first needed to be unlocked, and it would only be unlocked when the Creation Chamber reached Rank IX.
As for the Legendary rarity level, it would be unlocked when the Creation Chamber reached Rank X, the final possible rank for any of his lairs, structures, and creatures.
All in all, Jake was quite pleased with how the Wyrmcaller had turned out. The Fleshport ability (Uncommon) fit neatly into its designated slot, Mana Absorption (Superior) occupied the Superior slot, and Symbiotic rge (Rare) took its place in the Rare slot. So none of the slots were misused.
In total, he had spent a few hours working on this new creature. He was supposed to return to the Spartans’ base in the morning, but it was now well past noon. That was fine, though. The humans could wait. He had his own priorities. And now it was ti to test the wyrmcaller’s abilities in action.
