"No, there are so many people here, I’m scared." May stepped forward and grabbed lissa Greenwood’s clothing.
lissa Greenwood glared at her and lowered her voice in warning, "Don’t be so ungrateful. I’m giving you a chance here. Let go, or I’ll go inside and buy food for you right now."
May pursed her lips, looking as though she was about to burst into tears.
"Don’t you dare cry. Don’t make slap you right here." lissa Greenwood pointed at May. "Hold it in and wait here obediently."
May had no choice but to let go and stood there quietly waiting.
lissa Greenwood glanced around the area before heading into the children’s restaurant.
May, holding onto her sunflower balloon, noticed there were many people standing nearby and walked over to stand with them.
At that mont, the man who had been wearing a baseball cap and mask earlier approached her. "Little girl, do you want so candy?"
He took a lollipop out of his pocket and held it out to May.
May stepped back and accidentally trod on a nearby woman. She quickly apologized, "I’m sorry, ma’am."
"It’s okay." The woman glanced at May and then at the man, a wary look rising in her eyes.
"May, co here. Uncle will take you to find your mom." The man in the cap stood up and reached out to grab May.
May quickly hid behind the woman, "No, I don’t want to. I don’t know you."
The woman imdiately shielded May behind her, glaring coldly at the man, "Who are you? The child doesn’t know you. Let warn you, don’t try anything funny."
Her shout drew the attention of the surrounding crowd.
The man’s expression changed as he considered leaving, but by then, the crowd had surrounded him.
The woman squatted down and gently asked May, "Do you know this man?"
"No," May shook her head. "He gave candy. He shouldn’t be a bad person, right? He said he could help find my mom."
"Call the police, quick!" Soone instantly pulled out their phone to make a call.
"No, no!" The man in the cap panicked imdiately. "I really know her mom. Wait, let’s just wait here. When her mom cos out, she can prove it."
The crowd looked at him with doubt.
lissa Greenwood spent over half an hour inside before finally coming out with the food. Sure enough, May was nowhere in sight.
Her face turned pale as she dropped the items in her hands and cried out, "May? May, where are you?"
May heard her voice amidst the crowd and exclaid in surprise, "Mom’s back!"
She slipped through a gap in the crowd and threw herself at lissa Greenwood’s leg, hugging tightly. "Mom, you’re finally back."
lissa Greenwood was startled. Imdiately, the crowd gathered around again.
"What kind of mother are you, leaving such a small child here unattended?"
"Yeah, do you know your daughter was almost abducted by this man?"
Soone shoved the man in the cap forward.
"Miss Greenwood, I’m not a trafficker. We know each other, don’t we?" The man in the cap looked apologetically at lissa Greenwood. "Quick, help explain. I just saw May alone here and teased her a little. They mistook for a trafficker."
lissa Greenwood’s expression was unpleasant as she quickly explained to everyone, "It’s a misunderstanding, everyone misunderstood. We really do know each other."
She squatted down and spoke to May, "This is Uncle Ross. He’s been to our house before—don’t you rember?"
May shook her head and said to the man, "I’m sorry, Uncle."
"It’s okay, no problem." The man in the cap forced a laugh and said, "Well, since there’s no issue, I’ll leave now. Goodbye."
He squeezed through the crowd and hurried away.
The onlookers shook their heads as they gradually dispersed.
lissa Greenwood looked down at May, grinding her molars. She had originally planned for the man in the cap to take May away, so she could claim May had been kidnapped.
That way, even if May wasn’t with her, she wouldn’t be sent back to Yolanda Greenwood. As long as they couldn’t find May, she could keep threatening Yolanda forever.
But she hadn’t expected the plan to fail.
Was it because this kid was too smart? Or was the man in the cap just too incompetent?
"Mom, May is hungry." May tugged at lissa Greenwood’s hand.
"Starve!" Having almost lost the child once today, lissa Greenwood wasn’t about to risk losing her a second ti. She turned to leave. "We’re going ho!"
May trotted after her. "Mom, wait for . Are you mad at ?"
lissa Greenwood was even angrier.
Once ho, lissa Greenwood called May over in front of her. "Why didn’t you follow that uncle today?"
"I don’t know him," May said seriously, "The kindergarten teacher told us not to go with strangers."
lissa Greenwood gritted her teeth in fury. "You sure learned fast."
The kid wouldn’t go with strangers... She thought about it—this ant she’d have to find soone familiar. But who among the familiar people would help her take May away?
lissa Greenwood reflected for a long ti before finally thinking of soone. She imdiately made a call.
"We need to et."
"What for?" The other party clearly sounded unwilling.
"We’re not exactly the kind of people who just et for a chat, are we?" lissa Greenwood checked the ti. "Thirty minutes, at the entrance of Azure Cafe."
She hung up.
"Mom, where are you going?" May asked curiously.
"To et a friend. You stay ho and behave yourself." lissa Greenwood had co up with an idea and felt much better about her situation.
She patted May’s head, and a hint of pride erged as she thought about how clever this little one was and that she was her daughter. "May is really mom’s good girl. Mom will be back soon."
lissa Greenwood left.
May stayed in the living room for a while to make sure her mom had truly left. Then she ran up the stairs and into lissa Greenwood’s bedroom.
She spent quite so ti inside before running out, a sly grin tugging at the corner of her mouth.
She went to the living room and started playing with her blocks, humming a tune. "Seventh month, the ghost gate opens, ghosts co out to play..."
lissa Greenwood arrived at Azure Cafe. Thirty minutes passed, and her contact showed up as expected.
She flashed a pleased smile, knowing her bargaining chips were still effective.
"Brother, we’re allies, rember? I’ve said it before, helping is helping yourself."
Noah Coldson’s expression was grim. "Cooper has already decided to marry you. I’ve got nothing left to help you with. Don’t contact again."
"Just this one last ti," lissa Greenwood promised. "This is the last ti. After this, I’ll be Mrs. Coldson, you’ll be Yolanda Greenwood’s husband, and we’ll stay out of each other’s way."
"What are you planning now?" Noah Coldson’s voice turned cold. "I’m telling you—anything illegal, I won’t do."
"Relax, it’s nothing illegal." lissa Greenwood added reassuringly, "It’s sothing very, very good."
Noah Coldson stared at her, waiting for her to continue.
"Send May away."
"Away?"
lissa Greenwood elaborated, "Send her to Country M. But rember, don’t tell anyone!"
