That day, Leah Diaz was weighed down by heavy thoughts.
Toward the end of work in the evening, Yolanda Greenwood finally couldn’t help but ask her, "Have you gathered enough money?"
"Yeah," Leah Diaz forced a smile, "Thank you for caring."
Yolanda shook her head, "I wasn’t much help, by the way, is soone in your family sick? Is it serious?"
Leah Diaz’s eyes reddened instantly.
"Sister Leah," Yolanda was a bit panicked, "It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it, I won’t ask. I just see you’re anxious all day, and thought maybe talking about it might help."
She managed a forced smile, "It’s okay not to talk about it."
In fact, Yolanda had noticed over the past few days at the company that Leah Diaz wasn’t very close to other colleagues, always keeping a certain distance.
"It’s my son." As soon as Leah Diaz spoke, tears began to flow, "His na is Little Wood, and he’s eight years old this year."
She paused and took a while before speaking again, "Congenital heart disease."
Yolanda felt a sharp pain in her heart and didn’t know what to say to comfort Leah.
"When he was four, he had already undergone one surgery and got a stent," Leah cried profusely, "and now they say it’s no good, he needs another one."
She could no longer control her emotions and crouched down, crying, "It’s all my fault, I, his mother, didn’t take good care of him."
"Sister Leah, don’t be sad," Yolanda crouched next to her, gently patting her back, "It will be alright, the dical level in our country is so advanced now, it shouldn’t be a problem."
Leah had asked her family at midday, and the surgery was scheduled for two days later.
It was rembering her mother-in-law’s words and the thought of not being able to be by Little Wood’s side that made her feel unbearable.
She crouched and cried for quite so ti before she could compose herself again, apologetically looking at Yolanda, "Yolanda, I’ve made a fool of myself."
"How could you?" Yolanda’s eyes also reddened slightly. Being pregnant, she found it harder to witness such things.
She sniffled, "Sister Leah, you are here alone to earn money for your child’s treatnt, I believe the child will understand and won’t bla you."
Leah Diaz managed a helpless smile, "Maybe, I haven’t seen him for... a long ti now."
"Ah?" Yolanda was surprised, "Can’t you do a video call?"
Leah shook her head, "Little Wood’s condition isn’t good; he’s been staying in the ICU, so it’s inconvenient to do video calls. I also don’t want to trouble the family."
Yolanda felt that sothing was off. Leah was the child’s mother, and she was working herself to the bone here for her son. Was wanting to video call really troubling her family?
But after all, it was Leah’s family matter, and as an outsider, Yolanda felt she shouldn’t pry too much.
"When Little Wood’s surgery is done and he’s out of the ICU, you’ll be able to video call," Yolanda could only encourage Leah, "It should be soon."
Leah managed a smile, "Yeah, soon."
They bought ingredients for dinner together before heading ho. On the third floor, they saw that the door was closed.
They smiled at each other; the man must be at ho, and they were happy for May.
But upon reaching the fourth floor, they saw the man leading May, standing in front of their apartnt door.
The man had trimd his hair, shaved his beard, and was in new clothes, looking rejuvenated, which also made Yolanda feel like she had t him before.
And May was in new clothes too, with a butterfly clip in her hair, looking even cuter.
"You guys are getting off work quite late, huh?" Brooks Parker greeted them with a smile.
Leah didn’t say anything.
Before Yolanda ca, she had never spoken to Brooks and didn’t plan to have much contact with him after Yolanda left.
Although she felt sorry for Little May’s situation, she was struggling to look after herself and didn’t have extra money to help them.
"Yeah, we went to buy so groceries on the way," Yolanda knew about Leah’s situation and wouldn’t want to trouble her.
"That’s the thing; I need to step out for a bit and was wondering if you could..." Brooks’s gaze swept over them and finally settled on Yolanda, "help look after May for a bit. I should be back soon."
He wanted to find lissa Greenwood to see May.
Yolanda hesitated and looked at Leah.
Although Leah struggled, she quickly nodded and then said to Brooks, "Didn’t you say May’s mother was coming back? We can’t always look after May for you. You should put in more effort yourselves."
"Don’t worry, I’m going to pick up May’s mother today," Brooks knew Leah was reluctant to help and kept his eyes on Yolanda, "I’m troubling you again."
"Okay," Yolanda took May by the hand, ready to go inside.
"Oh," Brooks suddenly called out to her, "You’ve helped us look after May so many tis, and I never did ask—what’s your na?"
"Yolanda Greenwood!" Yolanda blurted out without much thought.
Leah wanted to intervene but it was too late.
She noticed a flash of surprise in Brooks’s eyes and then took the initiative to ask, "And you? What’s your na?"
Brooks smiled, "My na is of no importance."
He took a step back, descended the stairs, and quickly left.
Leah liked this man even less.
Inside the apartnt, Yolanda let May play on her own while she and Leah prepared dinner.
"Did you know that guy downstairs... before?" Leah suddenly asked.
"Eh?" Yolanda was surprised, "Why do you ask?"
"Nothing, it’s just that your response when you told him your na just now," Leah thought for a mont, "it seed as if he suddenly rembered sothing."
Yolanda frowned and didn’t reply; she had also noticed the man’s reaction.
Leah hmphed, "That guy is really sly, asked for your na but wouldn’t reveal his own. Think about it, maybe you do know him."
"Yeah, actually, I also feel he looks a bit familiar, but I just can’t rember where I’ve seen him," Yolanda resolved to think it over when she had ti.
Though judging by his appearance, he might be an upperclassman?
If that was the case, they would be several years apart. The man seed much older than her.
After leaving the apartnt, Brooks Parker called lissa Greenwood several tis, but she didn’t answer.
He went down to the Coldson Group building again and sent lissa a photo.
Sure enough, lissa’s call ca quickly, "What are you up to now?"
She was grinding her teeth, wishing she could kill Brooks.
"You’ve got to be kidding , just last night you were in bed with , twisting and turning, and it’s only been a few hours since then, you change faces faster than you pull up your pants?" Brooks flaunted his carefree deanor.
lissa tried to calm herself, "Brother Brooks, it’s dangerous to call rashly like this, Cooper Coldson is right by my side."
"Don’t threaten with him," Brooks gritted his teeth, "Co out; I need to see you."
"No way," lissa refused without a second thought, "Brooks Parker, what the hell do you want? Can’t you just talk on the phone?"
"Co out now!"
lissa completely lost her patience, "I’ve got things to do, hanging up now!"
