Chapter 1267: Chapter 1266: Angelic Chant
Ti seems to have frozen at this mont.
Karen stands in a daze.
Even though the doctor continues to diligently perform his duty, Karen pays him no mind, standing quietly and blankly in place.
Staring fixedly, motionlessly, at Felix lying on the bed.
The whole world falls silent.
Felix, pale and bloodless, lies there serenely and peacefully, the blue veins beneath his skin seemingly halted, and the remaining vitality dispersing helplessly into the cold air.
Sigh.
Karen exhales a long breath as if finally able to breathe.
She sits gingerly by the bedside, afraid to disturb Felix’s slumber, tilting her head to quietly study that angelic face.
Then, she lifts her fingers to gently smooth the wrinkles between Felix’s brows, where pain and tornt have constantly furrowed them, leaking hints of struggle despite all efforts to control it.
Not just for this period of ti.
The past three years, even five years, have been a constant tug-of-war of struggle, hope revived only to relapse again, a glimr of dawn only to fall back into the abyss, repeatedly consuming all their patience and wills, life derailed into chaos—
So much so that the Grey couple, tornted day after day, ended up wearing each other down, until one day, Felix’s father could bear the pain no longer, turning away to leave, escaping in despair and embarrassnt.
Yet, Karen did not give up, nor did Felix.
They kept going, they kept fighting, clawing back three years from the hands of the Death God, igniting hope in a battle destined to be lost, and most importantly, witnessing Kansas City regaining its dreams.
It was all worth it.
But now… he is finally free from the agony and tornt of illness, no longer tossed and turned by nightlong pain, no longer running back and forth between hope and despair, he can finally rest well.
Karen gently traces Felix’s face with her fingers, attempting to engrave the child’s features one last ti, so focused and so gentle.
Li Wei stands at the door, still not comprehending—
No sense of reality.
Is this the end?
No, it can’t be?
It can’t be!
In the next mont, Felix would suddenly sit up straight, startling both Karen and Li Wei with wild gestures, and burst into unrestrained laughter.
“Hahaha, you guys should see your faces.”
That would be the ultimate prank, not sparing even Karen and Li Wei.
The boy who cried wolf finally saw the wolf on the third occasion, amusing in fables, but mundane in reality, the prank should co with a twist.
However, there is none.
Not a sound is heard.
Felix remains quietly lying there, missing the perfect mont for the prank, the serene expression quietly and completely forgetting his prank partner Li Wei, sleeping soundly, all the clamors quietly settling down.
Finally, Karen stands up, turning to look at Li Wei, revealing a faint smile.
“Sorry, for the trouble.”
Li Wei’s voice is stuck in his throat, “Karen…”
Karen notices the sadness in Li Wei’s eyes, her smile grows brighter, “No, rookie, don’t be sad, perhaps this is a good thing.”
“A good thing…”
“Felix… no longer needs to take more dicine or treatnts, he’s finally free. Sotis, watching all the suffering Felix endured, I can’t help but think, perhaps it’s my selfishness trying to hold onto him, that’s why he endured those cruel treatnts again and again; while he always encouraged and comforted in turn, trying to give the strength to keep living, when it’s really who refused to let go…”
“But now…”
“This is a good thing. This is a good thing.”
“Rookie, this is a good thing, right?”
Again, and again, and again.
Karen helplessly searches for an answer, but this ti, Li Wei has no answer either.
“Maybe, the only regret is that he couldn’t witness us finishing the perfect season, an undefeated regular season and a Super Bowl victory, keeping the season perfect.”
“What a pity.”
Karen tries to make light of it, a teasing note, but it falls flat, her mouth filled with bitterness.
Li Wei finds his throat stuffed with cotton, unable to speak, not knowing what to say, feeling like an idiot, all his past eloquence useless at this mont.
Standing mute in place.
“He won’t miss it.” Li Wei finally finds his voice, speaking with difficulty.
Karen lifts her head to look at Li Wei, full of puzzlent.
Li Wei, “Felix won’t miss it. Rember, wherever they are, whichever way they watch the ga, they are always a part of the Kansas City Chiefs, fighting alongside us, pushing the limits and chasing dreams.”
“Felix runs with us on the field, facing the challenges together.”
Of course, there’s also Annie Galas.
Karen listens to Li Wei, nodding dazedly, her smile blooming fully.
“And .” Karen says, “I’ll do the sa, I’ll fight alongside the team to the end.”
“You know? Last week when you were in Foxborough, Felix was also watching the whole ga with the team, you should have seen him, full of vitality and life, we witnessed the complete silence at Gillette Stadium together.”
“That’s sothing that won’t be easily forgotten for a long ti.”
Finishing, inexplicably, Karen sinks back into sadness, lost in a brief daze.
Karen quickly takes a deep breath, forcing herself to smile again.
“Anyway, thank you… I need to… go find the doctor… there’s still a pile of paperwork ahead, I won’t delay your afternoon practice…”
Taking a step forward, but completely unexpectedly, she collapses as her knees give out.
Li Wei is startled, rushing forward, trying to help.
Karen waves her hands repeatedly indicating she’s okay, “It’s just my legs are a little numb…”
The words hang unfinished as suddenly, the tears she’s held back break free.
Karen hadn’t expected it, hurriedly wiping her tears, smiling, “Oh, God, I must look awful right now…”
But the tears won’t stop, can’t be stopped, Karen curls up hugging her knees on the ground, swallowing all sounds into silence, crying silently yet as if the world is ending, entirely buried in her knees.
Heartbreaking.
Li Wei stands helplessly beside her, eventually gently drawing Karen into an embrace, supporting a small haven, allowing Karen to freely pour out all her emotions, releasing all wounds and all vulnerability.
Gazing over Karen’s shoulder, Li Wei looks at Felix lying quietly on the hospital bed, an indescribable sense of rending slowly, slowly perating from deep within the soul, crashing fiercely into the heart in a tidal wave, cutting off breath in an instant, knees jellied, nearly losing his balance.
