An Ge felt a noticeable ripple deep in her heart when she heard the na Tang Jiuze. She couldn’t help but wonder why her heart twisted at the ntion of him when she could barely recall his appearance anymore. Was it because of hatred?

She didn’t answer Huo Shaoyan’s question.

Forty minutes later, [Jingcheng Hospital], An Ge and Huo Shaoyan appeared. When they arrived at the hospital, Sister Li, the caregiver, had just finished taking An Ge’s mother for a walk. In recent days, An Ge’s mother, Ms. Wen, had stabilized quite a bit; she rarely went into a frenzied state but still couldn’t recognize anyone.

Taking over from Sister Li, An Ge pushed her mother towards the inpatient building, speaking to Sister Li, "How’s my mom been lately?"

Sister Li replied, "Ms. Wen is still... easy to take care of. She just likes to be clean. If she has a little urinary incontinence, she’ll need to be cleaned right away, or else she’ll get upset."

"Thank you for your help," An Ge said.

"You pay the salary; it’s what I should do," Sister Li said straightforwardly. "Oh, your stepmother and father have been coming by every day these past few days while you were away, but I didn’t let them see her."

An Ge’s steps faltered briefly, "Did they say why they wanted to see my mom?"

Sister Li shook her head, "No. Each ti they brought a fruit basket. They were quite unhappy about not being allowed to see her."

An Ge felt there was more to this. Bai ilan and An Zhiguo were up to sothing by visiting her mother so frequently.

Not long after returning to the ward, Huo Shaoyan, who was waiting downstairs for Shen Hongxiu, ca up with her. Shen Hongxiu dressed quite casually today, with a beige thin sweater on top and a black A-line skirt below. Her well-maintained figure didn’t make her look chubby; rather, she appeared sophisticated.

Upon entering and seeing An Ge’s mother’s face, she was visibly disappointed.

She asked, not quite satisfied, "Is she really your mother?"

An Ge nodded, "Yes."

Shen Hongxiu said, "You don’t look like her; maybe you resemble your dad."

Upon hearing this, Huo Shaoyan also noticed the resemblance issue.

Although An Ge’s mother appeared very sickly with her pale and thin face, one could still catch a hint of her youthful beauty, yet not enough to classify her as a beauty. An Ge’s features, however, were delicate taken individually, and together made for an astonishingly stunning appearance; otherwise, she wouldn’t have drawn so many romantic entanglents.

But Huo Shaoyan thought she didn’t resemble An Zhiguo either. Even though An Zhiguo’s features were handso and well-proportioned, An Ge didn’t truly look like him.

"My mom has suffered a lot because of her illness, with no flesh on her face. We actually do look alike," An Ge said as she used a toothpick to feed a piece of cut cantaloupe to Ms. Wen, "Ms. Shen, you can see my mom’s condition. She can’t even rember now. I’m afraid if you’re hoping to find out sothing from her, you’ll be disappointed."

At that mont, Shen Hongxiu pulled a severely burned photo from her bag, a single six-inch portrait. Due to the extensive damage, only the clothing and half of the person’s less clear face could be seen.

Glancing at the picture, An Ge curiously asked, "Is she the friend you’re looking for?"

Shen Hongxiu gave a slight nod and then held the photo in front of Ms. Wen’s face, "Have you seen this woman..."

Before she could finish, Ms. Wen, who had been calm, suddenly went into a frenzy. She cried, scread, and even started hitting. Shen Hongxiu, caught off guard, also got scratched on the face by her.

An Ge tried to intervene but got scratched on the chin as well. In the end, it was Huo Shaoyan who called a doctor to administer a sedative, finally calming her down.

Ignoring the pain in her chin, An Ge hurriedly apologized to Shen Hongxiu, "I’m sorry. My mom’s condition is always fluctuating. She didn’t do it on purpose."

Shen Hongxiu said, "It’s alright; it was my fault. I should have at least gotten familiar with her before asking for information."

After saying that, she turned to Huo Shaoyan, "Ah Yan, co out with for a bit. I have sothing to talk to you about."

The two left shortly.

Looking at her mother, sleeping soundly after the sedative, An Ge felt a soreness in her eyes like she couldn’t bear it. Her eyelashes fluttered slightly, and tears almost fell.

If it weren’t for her incompetence, her mother wouldn’t be suffering like this.

A year ago, when she took the fall for An Baoying and went to jail, her mother wasn’t this far gone, and when her mind was clear, she would stroke her head and repeat her nickna over and over again, "You’re my Xiao Ge, Mommy’s dearest Xiao Ge..."

In just one year, An Zhiguo had tortured her mother to such a state.

An Ge’s mother woke up an hour later. After An Ge fed her so water, she noticed her mother continuously shedding tears while gazing at her, mumbling unclear words. Leaning closer, she could barely make out a few words, seemingly urging her to live well.

An Ge felt a sharp bitterness in her heart, leaning over to hug her mother for a long, long ti. When she finally raised her head, her face was covered in tears.

"What are you crying about?"

A voice ca from behind her.

Turning instinctively, An Ge found herself facing a man who had entered at so point, his gaze locking onto hers.

His face showed hardly any emotional fluctuations, but his look at her was different from usual, layered with a few depths of tender affection. It seed to hold hidden desires, the sentint of a man looking at a woman, as if probing into sothing.

An Ge, a bit flustered, wiped her face, realizing only then how tear-streaked it was.
