Chapter 119: The shot to rule a World
Josh stood with the Generals and Mithrael. He crossed his arms. "No. That isn’t right." He said as he watched a Llrathel pivot and shoot it’s main weapon.
He turned to Heque. "General, when the Llrathels conduct movent and maneuver they have to make sure to use terrain features as cover. The tops of hills, a treeline, things of that nature. If they move from a position of cover, they will get picked apart out in the open. The otherworlders can scan the horizon with what are called ’thermal scanners’. They can see heat signatures from miles away."
The General nodded, taking notes as Josh spoke. He turned to an aide.
"Ensure these notes are copied, and disseminated to all the commanders of the new Llrathels."
"Yes General." The aide said as he left the room with a bow.
A resounding "Boom" echoed out from the valley as the Llrathel engaged its main gun, and Josh smirked.
"Well, at least the firepower is better."
The Llrathel units were practicing on older generations of the vehicle that were no longer in use. Each dummy Llrathel was being destroyed with one shot from the newest generation. He checked his notes.
"Lord Mithrael, these new Llrathels will not win in a direct confrontation with the otherworlders. With that being said, they can cause damage. We are no longer out classed so thoroughly that the Llrathels are little more than target practice."
Mithrael smiled as he watched another dummy Llrathel be destroyed.
"I am pleased, Hero. The technology you were able to bring to us simply using schematics from your world has improved the Empire once more. Now, let us have the Mumat systems practice their targeting. I want to see the capabilities of our newest weapon."
"As you wish, Sire."
Josh stepped outside the tent and raised up a Red flag. He sighed as he waved it in a circular motion. "If only we had radios."
A few hundred feet away, he saw a soldier waving a red flag back, the signal that his order was recieved. He went back into the tent, sitting beside Mithrael. "The order was recieved, Sire. If you will refer to the map in front of you, I have marked all the target areas."
Mithrael nodded. "Very well."
He traced his finger along the areas outlined. "That is roughly ten miles. How will the operators target that far?"
"We have created a system using summons, My Lord. A mage will head out to an area of interest, and verify the presence of an enemy location. They will then summon a bird or small animal and send it back to the operators with the coordinates."
Mithrael nodded. "I heard you say sothing about a radio when you were outside the tent. What are those?"
"Long distance, instantaneous communication, Your Majesty. With a radio, I can talk to the Mumat operators from miles away. The device I carry daily allows for sothing similar. In my world we have been able to talk to soone on the other side of the globe with one push of a button."
Mithrael’s eyes narrowed. He then turned to the chief engineer. "Can we replicate sothing similar?"
The Engineer shook his head. "We have been attempting to do so, Your Majesty. Thus far, we have had little progress."
Mithrael leaned back in his chair as he read through his reports. "It says here that the theoretical range of the Mumat is forty miles. Why are we only targeting ten?"
Josh opened the report. "Sire, at this mont we have been unable to effect a target accurately in that range. When the first tests were conducted, we were nearly one mile off from the target area. Within ten miles we are accurate to an area of fifteen ters."
"I see. Very well. I look forward to seeing the fruits of your labor."
All eyes turned to the valley. Josh held back the temptation to hold his breath as he looked at the various targets. Old Llrathels and mana vehicles were spread throughout the target areas. Air seed to rush around them as mana seed to thin out. Josh looked up, seeing shimrs of blue and green balls floating backwards as if being sucked in by a vacuum. The hair on his neck stood up a deafening "Thunk" roared across the valley. Every instinct in his body scread for him to get down. Wind seed to push outward, dust clouds rising above the launch site. Josh looked down. His eyes widened. What was once a valley lay in craters wider than a city blocks. Sweat trickled down the back of his neck as he scanned for the remains of the dummy equipnt. Husks of molten steel outlined where each vehicle had been.
"It’s more powerful than I thought." He said quietly.
After the dust settled, craters lay where the previous old equipnt used to be. Mithrael stood up, his arms clasped behind his back. "We will use these to fortify the areas around Brishan City, Dresken, and Hieta." Mithrael said, his voice even. "When we have one thousand each of the Mumat, Llrathels, and Sraiaz sytems, we will launch on their new cities. I grow tired of learning their numbers are growing. We will send a ssage to them with our new power: submit, or die. I have no use for mortals that question the will of us Gods. Stay here and oversee further training. Report back to
by weeks end."
Josh bowed. "As you wish, my lord."
Eric sat at his desk. Reports were stacked in front of him, and he sighed.
"I didn’t miss this."
"Master Sergeant? Erica and Justin are here, as requested." A soldier called from the front of his office.
"Let them in."
In the week since Washington fractured, Eric had Justin and Erica compile notes on each system and capabilities the Emipre had been working on before they left. He had ordered them to have office to see if they knew anything about the capabilities of the systems they had captured pictures of.
"Do either of you know what these are?"
He slid multiple pictures of the MRLS looking systems in front of them.
Erica’s eyes widened. "I have a contact that is still in Cartharic. She told
that they are working on sothing much like the rocket systems used in the siege. She called them Mumat."
Eric traced his finger over a page on one of the recent docunts. "Mumat?"
Erica looked up. "Yes. It seems to be a smaller version of the Brios."
As Eric was scanning the picture and thinking about what Erica said, a soldier ca rushing into the room. "Master Sergeant, urgent report!"
Eric looked up, sighing. "Erica and Justin, go back to your quarters. We will pick this up later."
The two left, and Eric looked at the soldier. "What is it?"
"They are conducting tests outside of Brishan City, Master Sergeant. General Milano has asked that you co to the command room."
Eric rubbed his face in his hands, putting his folders away.
"I’ll be right there."
He pulled out his phone, texting Mia.
"I’m gonna be late again. Apparently Cartharic has a new weapon. ??"
The response ca quickly: "Tell Milano that he needs to stop keeping you so late. I’ll co up there and hand Liara to him so he can change a diaper! ?? Be safe. I love you. I’ll have leftovers in the microwave."
He smiled, putting his phone away after taking one last look at her picture. "I love you too."
At the command room, the first thing Eric noticed were the pictures side by side being projected on the wall. He stopped in the doorway, his eyes narrowing.
"Are you serious?"
The before and after pictures were glaring. On the right, a pristine valley filled with equipnt and grasslands. On the left, a desolate wasteland. Fires burned, with craters dotting the landscape. Each crater was massive, it was as if soone had used the block of a neighborhood to stamp the ground.
Eric took his spot, noticing Milano wasn’t there yet. "Talk to . What am I looking at?"
"Master Sergeant, we captured these pictures yesterday. We have had ISR flying overhead ever since detecting heat signatures coming from this area. We were then able to capture this video."
Eric’s eyes narrowed as he watched the launch. The systems in his pictures were firing. They fired slowly, but when their rounds hit, it was similar in effect to the JDAM missiles.
He sighed as he read the reports. "Ten miles?"
"Yes Master Sergeant. It seems they can theoretically reach forty miles, but it is inaccurate. They can precisely target within ten miles."
Eric put the reports away as Milano walked in. The General sat at his desk and folded his arms across his chest.
"What are our options for this new threat. I just got off the phone with President Nieto and King Remory. We will hold the Dresken operation until it is safe to launch a mission into Dresken. Our priority will be to destroy these new systems."
