Jiang An took a taxi back to school and arrived at 8 p.m. With graduation approaching and the busy errands of her three roommates, they were almost all out, and Xia Zi, who had always lived on campus, had gone ho. In the dark, Jiang An flipped the switch on the wall, and the dim light barely illuminated the entire dormitory. The girl quickly tidied up her bed because she couldn’t bathe due to an injury, so she fetched a basin of water and entered the bathroom to simply wipe down her body. Removing her clothes, the girl clumsily dampened a towel, looked down, and gently wiped her chest and back, a cool sensation flooding her entire body, finally dispelling the stickiness from the journey.
Lifting her head, the girl saw her blurred reflection in the mirror, her deep eyes shimring with waves. Her movents suddenly froze, and she struggled to produce a bashful smile at herself in the mirror. Her black hair covered her cheeks, and it took several seconds to notice an unwitting blush on her face.
Suddenly, a voice erged in her heart, questioning herself, would Dr. Gao like her? Such an ordinary her?
Even if her answer to herself was negative, deep down she still preserved hope, wishing she would be that one-in-a-million chance.
Jiang An had been a complete novice in love all her life, with a severe lack of experience in liking soone, her knowledge about love derived almost entirely from romance novels she had read and from friends around her who were in relationships. She didn’t even know how to define liking soone.
All she knew was that she liked being with Dr. Gao, who now held an irreplaceable place in her heart.
When she couldn’t see him, she thought of him, and when she did see him, she was too shy to co close—a feeling she seed never to have had before.
As she mused and realized she was grinning foolishly at herself in the mirror, Jiang An quickly ca back to her senses and swiftly finished wiping her body, changing into her pajamas with one hand, and started to tidy up the bathroom.
Only after being busy with everything did she leisurely lie on her bed, take out her phone from her already pocket, and notice a few unread ssages, including two from Gao Chuan.
At this particularly sensitive mont, seeing a ssage from the person she had been longing for, her brain surged with excitent, completely ignoring the ssages piled above Gao Chuan’s icon, she reached out and tapped to open them.
Gao Chuan: When did the doctor say you should change the dressing?
Gao Chuan: I’ll accompany you.
Just two short lines, but they made Jiang An feel like she was floating, the corners of her mouth lifted slightly, her narrow eyes squinting into slits as she lay in bed, constantly staring at her calves with an infatuated expression.
What a hopeless creature!
Normally, given her character of not liking to trouble others, she would choose to refuse, especially Dr. Gao with whom she would find an excuse to decline. After typing a line of text and about to send it, she suddenly stopped, her mind filled with the words Gao Chuan had said to her in the afternoon.
He said he was her husband.
He said that when sothing ca up, she should go to him.
Her slender fingers lingered on the T9 keyboard for several seconds before Jiang An started deleting letter by letter, retyping.
Gao Chuan, who was studying, heard the notification sound from the phone at hand, hurriedly picked it up, and saw a ssage from Jiang An, a faint smile spreading across his lips.
Jiang An: Okay.
It seed as if sothing was indeed quietly changing, imperceptibly and silently.
Still lying in bed, her emotions stirring, Jiang An was giggling foolishly at her phone screen, wanting to find an answer to the doubts in her heart. Naturally, she turned to Xia Zi, the love expert of her dorm, for advice on matters of the heart.
The girl reopened her phone and fumbled to Xia Zi’s chat window, habitually sending the ssage, "What’s up, babe?"
After sending it, she pondered over how she would broach the topic. If Xia Zi asked who she liked, how should she respond? At all costs, she couldn’t reveal Dr. Gao’s identity, for passionate fan Xia Zi would surely freak out.
As the girl was indulging in her fanciful thoughts, a new ssage appeared on her phone. She quickly opened it and for a mont, was lost for words, her face flushing red like a budding rose.
Engrossed in sending her ssage, she hadn’t noticed that she had opened the wrong chat. Until the reply ca, she realized she had carelessly sent it to the wrong person.
Her heart nearly leaped out of her chest as she took another peek at the ssage on the screen.
Gao Chuan: Reading a book.
Her heart fluttering wildly, Jiang An grabbed the pillow beside her and clutched it tightly to her chest, her face burning with embarrassnt. She was annoyed at herself but also a bit astonished; she hadn’t expected Dr. Gao to actually reply. Could this an that Dr. Gao tacitly accepted the nickna "babe"?
Setting aside the awkwardness of the mistaken recipient, one thought floated in Jiang An’s mind.
She had mistakenly called Dr. Gao "babe," and Dr. Gao hadn’t expressed any confusion.
Now that the subject had co up, whether or not to explain it beca the focus of her dilemma. Jiang An’s brain whirred frantically - what if, after explaining it was sent to the wrong person, Dr. Gao asked who "babe" was? How would she respond then?
After a lengthy brainstorm, Jiang An finally cald down and rolled over in bed, inexplicably wanting to continue chatting with Gao Chuan casually, as if nothing had happened. So she replied with ease.
Jiang An: What book?
Receiving the ssage from Jiang An, Gao Chuan was also full of question marks, puzzled by the girl’s sudden familiar address. He was busy with work on regular days and rarely chatted idly; his WeChat was mostly for work communication or keeping in touch with family and friends. His dry lifestyle was certainly outdated for a young woman in her twenties. Suddenly being called "babe," the man was shocked and wide-eyed. It was obvious even to a fool that respectful Jiang An must have sent the ssage by mistake. Yet, after a few seconds, he replied with nonchalance.
A "ding dong" alerted another ssage on the phone, and Gao Chuan glanced over, his eyebrows and eyes curving into a smile, his expression instantly softened. As he was about to type in the book’s na, it suddenly occurred to him that the book he was reading was the one Jiang An found that afternoon. Feeling uneasy, he randomly typed in the na of a philosophy book he had been reading and sent it.
Jiang An received his reply and regretfully was unfamiliar with the book Gao Chuan ntioned. She felt awkwardly silent, not knowing what to say to the phone screen, and without thinking, the girl bit her finger.
So, the conversation ca to an abrupt end. Gao Chuan looked at the lack of further replies from Jiang An, quietly set down his phone, and when he thought of the book he was just reading, couldn’t continue with the previous progress.
