Jiang An was standing still, lost in whimsical thoughts, when the man sitting on the sofa suddenly turned his head. Seeing the sweet smile on the girl’s face and the clarity in her eyes, he abruptly rembered his audacious behavior from the afternoon. He, who had always been emotionally detached, had never thought there would co a day when he would want to take the initiative to kiss a woman, nor had he ever imagined that woman would be Jiang An.

In this marriage in na only, it seed he was the one who truly overstepped the boundaries.

Jiang An lifted her head and t the man’s gaze. Just as she was about to walk back to her room, she suddenly heard the man’s deeply magnetic voice filling the silent living room: "Where do you want to go for fun?"

Her steps halted abruptly. Jiang An turned her gaze in surprise and found the man had already turned his head back, but the words were ant for her, the slightly hoarse timbre echoing in the air.

Jiang An was flustered for a mont. She had thought that Gao Chuan’s refusal of Shen i’s arrangent just now was an unspoken agreent to call off the unnecessary honeymoon. Could it be that Dr. Gao was indeed planning to take her on a honeymoon?

"The hospital probably won’t give a long leave. I should be able to take three days off. We can find sowhere nearby to have fun." Gao Chuan didn’t continue to observe the girl’s astonished expression. He reached out to pour himself a cup of water from the teapot on the coffee table, his fair and slender fingers distinct under the bright afternoon sunshine.

Indeed, as the deputy head of the oncology departnt in the hospital, Gao Chuan was always busy with outpatient surgeries. One thing you couldn’t really hope for as a doctor was a vacation. At first, when he heard Gao Lin’s suggestion, he had also intended to use the excuse of work to decline. However, today, when Shen i suddenly made such a demand and chided him for neglecting his family, he beca impulsive. He might truly want to try being a good husband.

"There’s no need, Dr. Gao. Don’t let it interfere with your work. I have a lot of papers to defend and internships to complete at school as well. Let’s forget about the honeymoon," Jiang An replied, waving her hand dismissively.

Gao Chuan didn’t expect such an answer from Jiang An. His gaze leisurely moved to the transparent glass on the table. Since the young lady had said so, it wouldn’t be appropriate for him to say more. He simply responded with a noncommittal "Hmm."

Jiang An hurried back to her room. The exhausted girl collapsed onto the soft bed. The gentle sunlight shone on her rosy cheeks, her lips slowly curved into a smile, and her eyes vacant as she stared at a corner of the pillow. Her face remained flushed; she didn’t know when it started, but in front of Dr. Gao, she always thought about running away, not daring to look directly into the man’s eyes.

The distance she didn’t dare to close, the blushing and heartbeat that would be triggered with a re touch, along with the lingering feelings in her dreams, she seed to be so easily moved, especially in front of Dr. Gao.

Always afraid that with just a word, just a glance, the palpitations would be exposed.

Perhaps, she had been deceiving her own heart all along, she should have admitted it to herself sooner.

She likes Dr. Gao. It’s an old story.

In the evening, Shen i was busy up and down preparing a large table full of dishes for the two of them. After dinner, Jiang An left first due to school matters, leaving Shen i and Gao Chuan, mother and son, facing each other.

"Tell the truth, how did Anan hurt her hand? You didn’t bully the girl, did you?" Shen i began to clear the tableware, questioning Gao Chuan who was still sitting at the dining table, her suspicious gaze scrutinizing him intensely, making Gao Chuan’s scalp tingle.

"It’s a burn, as I’ve said," Gao Chuan seed to have anticipated that Shen i wouldn’t easily believe him, but due to Gao Yu’s request, he thought to keep it hidden for now.

Shen i snatched a bunch of chopsticks and tapped them dissatisfiedly on the table, "I used to be a nurse, do you think I’d believe that’s a bandage for a burn? You two, one a doctor and the other a dical student."

Hearing Shen i’s tone becoming increasingly contemptuous, the man frowned deeply, and as Shen i continued to press him, "Well? You didn’t hit Anan, did you? And threatened her not to talk about it?"

Dr. Gao’s face turned pale in an instant, and he couldn’t help but admire his mother’s wild imagination. Did she really have so little confidence in the son she raised? After so many years of quality education, could he possibly be an abuser?

Shen i seed not to believe her own words either, and with a sigh, she said earnestly, "Hey, I know you wouldn’t hit a woman. I must tell you, you can’t bully Anan. That girl is so pitiful, orphaned in her twenties with no one to rely on. Since you married her, you have to take responsibility. Your father and I aren’t forcing you to do this or that, but you’re already thirty, it’s ti you learn to cherish others."

Normally, Gao Chuan always let Shen i’s nagging go in one ear and out the other, but today, after listening to his mother’s advice, he nodded in agreent. It seed that many others had said similar things to him, Gao Lin, Gao Yu, and even Wei Yan, whom he had never t. So many were aware of Jiang An’s difficulties, so how could he, who had witnessed Jiang An lose her mother, not see it?

So many people had told him to cherish Jiang An more, everyone except Jiang An herself. Even during those days that might have been dark and hopeless for her, she would just shrink in a corner alone, licking her wounds, never reaching out to ask him for anything.

Maybe he really should learn to cherish her?

Shen i picked up the stacked dishes and looked at Gao Chuan who seed sowhat distracted sitting in the chair. She pursed her lips and waved the chopsticks in her hand through the air, casting a shadow over the man’s dark pupils. Shen i’s voice then reached his ears: "Anan won’t be able to use her hand for the next few days, take good care of her. When you have ti, pick her up from school and help her with her studies, don’t just focus on your work."

Snapping him back to reality, the man’s eyes flickered and he replied calmly, "Okay, I know."

Not until Shen i finished tidying up the kitchen, also helping to tidy up the living room for the two, did she leave. Before leaving, she repeatedly reminded Gao Chuan to take good care of the injured Jiang An. The repetitive words nearly wore his ears out. When the spacious room was left with only himself, the man’s heart finally cald down. After making himself a coffee, he entered the study, his gaze inadvertently falling on the book Jiang An had been looking for in the afternoon. The volu had been returned to its place by the girl, carefully positioned without a single difference.

He could seemingly visualize the girl’s shy face, a faint smile on her lips, eyes brimming with endless depths. His originally steady heartstrings seed to be plucked along with her every frown and smile.

The usually unsmiling man silently took down the book, put on a pair of gold-rimd glasses, and began to read quietly, the soft light casting a faint shadow over his shoulders.
