Chapter 899: Chapter 92: Escape from Vena Ice-Free Port
The Vena Ice-Free Port, shrouded in the Mist of Strangeness, was silent and still.
Lu Li and his companions waited in the ward.
Now was not the best ti, the Mist of Strangeness was not safe, especially for Lu Li.
Their ti to act would be near dawn.
The presence in the mist would diminish, and the guards surveilling the hospital periter would grow lax.
Katerina and Barry rested in their seats. As ti passed, the clock’s hands in the corner overlapped at the lowest point.
In the Old Era, even in winter, it would have been morning by now, but it was still deep night. Nearing 7 o’clock would they be able to see without an oil lamp outdoors.
However, they should prepare to leave.
The doctor, who checked in every hour, knocked on the ward door again, carrying the scent of disinfectant. Lu Li told him that they would rest next and there would be no need to check again before morning, as well as asking the guards outside to leave.
“That’s fine, Exorcist, your recovery rate is quick.”
The doctor spoke respectfully, checked Lu Li’s wound, and then exited the ward.
Click.
The door closed, Katerina stepped forward to latch it.
Barry proactively took the suitcase.
“Hold on, let’s wait a bit longer,” Katerina glanced at Lu Li and said to Barry.
…
“The Exorcist said not to disturb him afterward…”
In the director’s office on the sa floor as the ward, the doctor recounted his conversation with Lu Li and left the room.
“His Excellency Lu Li is weary.” The mayor’s assistant yawned, having not slept all day.
Mayor Matteus, who also hadn’t slept for a day, sipped warm coffee: “Maybe he’s sensed we are watching him. How long until dawn?”
“Less than an hour and a half.”
“We’ll visit then, but first, let’s have the guards on that floor withdraw.” Mayor Matteus stated, still sowhat uneasy. “There are guards stationed at the top of Bronte Departnt Store, right? Have soone enter the room to watch the ward from the window, sending updates every ten minutes unnecessary… I’ll go myself.”
Mayor Matteus stood up, waited for the assistant to drape a coat over him, and left the office.
…
Swish——
Tightening his tie, the shirt collar gathered to hide the neck bandage, revealing just the edges.
Leaving the bed, Lu Li tidied the sheets. Katerina thought he was about to fold them up, but instead, Lu Li ssed them up more, stuffing the pillow under the sheets to show a contour. Then he moved the coat rack by the door to the window, pulling down the bedsheet to cover the rack.
Though it looked odd, from the outside peering in through the curtains, it resembled a figure leaning by the window.
“What are you doing?” Katerina didn’t understand.
Puxiu found it familiar, he must have read sothing similar in a book!
“If they’re watching, it can buy us so ti.” Lu Li replied.
“Aren’t we waiting for the rchant?”
Barry, holding the suitcase, asked innocently, seemingly unworried about the rchant acting up like last ti.
rchants of the Inner World disliked Barry, which puzzled people, but fortunately, Barry didn’t resent rchants for that, avoiding conflict.
“It will find us.” Lu Li said, moving to the ward door to remove the latch.
“I never thought a proud Exorcist like you would resort to this sort of thing…”
Katerina muttered helplessly before Lu Li opened the door.
“We’re going to sneak out!”
The only one excited was the gang leader who loved this ga.
Squeak——
The door’s creak echoed far in the silence.
Dim light poured from the ceiling light, and the corridor was empty, with no patients, doctors, or guards around.
Lu Li and his companions stealthily walked down the corridor, where even a slight sound would echo, and the air reeked of disinfectant.
They reached the stairs at the end of the corridor, but their progress wasn’t smooth; descending to the second floor, they had to stop due to guards downstairs.
The guards had rely withdrawn from the third floor, not left the hospital.
“Which way?”
Katerina whispered.
Weinstein Hospital had another staircase, but there should be guards there too.
“Climb out the window.”
Dispelling the idea of trying their luck with the other staircase, they retreated back along the corridor, trying ward doors one by one until finding an unlocked room and entering.
A young girl leaned against the headboard, quietly reading a book, while a middle-aged maid slept beside her.
Their sudden intrusion startled her, and she gasped, raising her book to cover her face, revealing only her clear eyes.
“The Last Exorcist,” was written on the book cover.
The fear in the girl’s eyes suddenly turned to surprise; she looked at Lu Li, then down at her book, growing excited.
Katerina thought it might be a story about Lu Li, whispering, “Keep this a secret, alright?”
The middle-aged maid remained undisturbed, and the girl hurriedly nodded.
Opening the window, the cold night wind blew the curtains aside; Katerina grabbed Puxiu by the neck and leapt down, and Barry tossed the suitcase down for Katerina to catch before climbing onto the window ledge and jumping down himself.
“If they ask you, feel free to tell them.”
Lu Li turned to the gleaming-eyed girl, saying as he leapt down amid her astonished cry.
“Mm…”
A low hum sounded beside her, as the awakened middle-aged maid slowly opened her eyes.
“Miss…” she looked up at the girl hurriedly pretending to read, then glanced outside in puzzlent, “why is the window open…”
On the ground floor of Weinstein Hospital, Lu Li and the others erged from a faux flowerbed made from colored dyes.
The dyes long dry, they needn’t worry about staining their clothes.
Skirting past the stationed guards, they quietly slipped into the mist-covered empty streets.
“Is this the way to the port?”
Katerina turned her head to ask Lu Li, who held the oil lamp: “Are we leaving by a big ship?”
The desolate streets had only streetlights casting dim light, and the surrounding fog made her uneasy, as if so presence was peering through.
“It must stay for repair,” Lu Li said. “We’ll leave after bidding farewell.”
Leaving without notice might cause so trouble.
“Alright then…”
Though Katerina often sensed strong Old Era vibes from Lu Li, at tis, he seed more like a person of this era, like now.
Even she struggled to view cold entities as “communicable beings.”
Spending half an hour to reach the port, the sky appeared sowhat lighter than before, though perhaps it was rely an illusion, as the massive shadows of the shipyard erged in the mist ahead.
No one guarded this place, nor was there a need, and Lu Li and the others slipped easily into the shipyard.
Lu Li approached the big ship to convey their plans: to stay here and wait for their return.
After a brief wait, the gang leader under the hood raised her hands in cheer: “It agreed!”
Her words barely ended when a commotion erupted outside the shipyard door.
They couldn’t see the guards, only the chaotic footsteps and armor clashing from the mist, and the shimring firelight staining the fog.
“They’ve found us, damn it!” Katerina cursed lowly.
“So fast!”
Puxiu marveled, they’d barely left and now missing they were already tracked down here.
Being caught by guards wasn’t a concern, but leaving again would prove trickier afterward.
Then Barry suddenly spoke.
“I can lead them away.”
