Chapter 41: 41. The cooler twin

First of all, I don’t know how I missed all the photos on the walls. I guess everything just happened so crazily last night if not I most definitely would have noticed the pictures of the big twins on the walls.

So, yeah, what do I know about Rey Grand?

Well, here are the things I’ve learnt so far...

Rey and Duke are twins with just a minute and half separate from each other. Rey beat Duke in the fight for who would erge first from their mother’s womb. And he, he’s a professional soccer player, a very popular one, according to Duke and Alan, but I wouldn’t know. I don’t watch sports. Now I know why he referred to the twins as his little footballs.

Oh, I now also know how old Duke is, they are both thirty-two.

But unlike Duke, Rey was sohow able to dodge the snow bath.

And also, he really is a nice guy, from what I’ve seen so far. He even apologized for flirting with . Also, he didn’t get presents for just the twins, he got for everyone, including

who he was yet to et. He got

a blue coffee sippy cup. And in all sincerity, I like it. It’s big and looks like it can retain heat.

It kind of pains

that I’m the only one who didn’t bring gifts. I didn’t even give the twins gifts. And according to Duke, Emily set a no going out rule every Christmas day. No one is to go anywhere far for any reason. Everyone must spend the ti at ho.

If it wasn’t for that I would have run out to look for any open market or store to get sothing for everyone. I feel really bad.

"All I all, I have the coolest na. Rey Grand, it’s unbeatable." He says and I laugh while Alan scoffs.

"I an, what can beat a Grand King?"

"Duke Grand has a nice ring to it, you can’t change that. And where have you ever heard anyone say Grand King, before? It’s only Grand Duke. My na is cooler." Duke counters and I can’t stop laughing.

"Urgh, I can’t believe you two. You still argue about this stuff. You’re both old now, you know that?" Alan shakes his head.

"Shush, baby." Rey says with a finger over his lips. "Your big brothers are talking." I still don’t get it though, is Alan really their brother? Why then is he Alan O’Neil and not Alan Grand? It’s weird.

"Sister-in-law, you decide, whose na is cooler. And in all honesty now. Don’t choose Duke because he’s your husband. Be truthful, whose na is cooler?" He asks . Why is he asking

all of a sudden?

Why does he have to bring

into this? Now Duke is silently staring at

with no particular expression on his face. It’s like he’s silently and calmly daring

to choose wrongly.

"Uhm, well, to be honest, Rey Grand is an aweso na."

"Yes!!!" Rey punches into the air in victory, but I’m not done.

"However," He instantly stops punching and is staring at

again, "I like the sound of Duke Grand better. Duke Grand will always sound remarkably cool to ." I confess with a shrug. "It just has a nice ring to it. And besides, Grand Dukes are my favorite kinds of Male protagonists in stories."

I see Duke’s lips twitch, he’s holding back a smile. I can tell. "You hear that?" He asks in a cool and reserved manner. "Remarkably cool. I win, case closed." He shrugs.

Rey turns to Renny and Shelly who have been shooting sticky bullets at each other with the guns Rey bought them; one of the many gifts he bought them. "Renny, Shelly, who’s cooler? Is it ugly old daddy or smooth handso toy-giving uncle Rey?"

"Uncle Wey!!!" They both scream with enthusiasm and continue shooting their guns.

"Hear that snow boy and snow boy’s wife?" He scoffs as he rises to his feet with his hands dramatically in the air,

"Uncle Wey wins. Now the case is officially closed." He smirks and shoots fake finger guns at

and Duke, then at Alan.

"Co one kids, let

show you all the other things I got for you."

"YAY!!!"

"Crazy human being." Duke shakes his head. His eyes suddenly rest on

and there’s sothing about the way he’s just silently staring at . It unnerves ... In a weirdly nice way.

He suddenly rises to his feet, walks towards

and stretches his hand out to . "Wanna go for a walk?" My eyes move from his outstretched hand to Alan and he just shakes his head, picks up his phone and starts doing whatever with it.

I look back at Duke and I produce a smile as I nod, "Yes." And I slip my hand into his own.

...

Even in silence, being with him is nice. Too nice. Walking together side by side just by the edge of the water. We’ve walked a good distance from the house and maybe it’s because it’s winter, the beach is really empty. I’ve never been to the beach before, but based on what I’ve seen and heard, it’s usually filled with people.

Or, "Is this a private beach?" I ask.

"It is." He says and that would explain why it’s empty.

"Do you like it here?" He asks.

"What could I possibly hate? The view? Or the hot endless food?" I ask and he chuckles.

"True," he says, and once again everything becos silent. It’s just the sound of soft waves going back and forth. It’s calming and nice.

"Oh, no." He suddenly grumbles.

"What? What is it?" I ask.

"Seriously you two are old.." He yells and I look in the direction he’s looking at. I’m not wearing my glasses, but I think that’s Emily and Fredrick. I was wondering where they went.

"Pagne, can you see them?" He suddenly asks.

"Not clearly, a little."

"Good, your eyes saved you from watching two old people kissing in the snow." He says and realizing what he’s saying I begin to flush.

So Emily and Fredrick are busy making out... Way to go Emily. I rember there was a scene like that in the comic, Lovers at forty.

"Co on, let’s go this way." He says and turns

around.

"I think it’s romantic." I mutter to myself as we walk away, leaving them to continue their business.

"Of course you do." He chuckles dryly.

...

"So, Y_Your twin, Rey, he seems like a nice guy." I say as we sit on a bench, staring at the waters moving back and forth with ease.

"He’s all talk. He’s basically harmless."

"And the twins love him."

"Oh they do. He gives them loads of presents every ti he visits so yeah, they love the present-giving uncle Wey." He says with a laugh and I laugh too.

But I’m curious, about Alan. Will it be wrong of

to ask? I want to know though. "Uhm, Duke, about Alan... Is he your brother?"

He chuckles, "Why? Can’t hold on to your curiosity any longer?"

"Was it obvious that I was curious?"

He turns slightly to face , "Your eyes," He suddenly cups my cheek with one palm, stroking

with his thumb. And amidst the cold, his touch is warm and pleasant, "they tend to run around whenever you’re curious about sothing."

"You don’t know that." I say.

"Of course I do, Dearest. I’m learning all your expressions. To be honest you don’t mask your feelings and emotions all too well."

"I thought I was really good at hiding my emotions." I argue.

"No." He shakes his head.

"No?" I ask.

"No." He takes his hand off my face and sits straight again.

"I’ll have to work harder." I say with determination and he chuckles.

"Alan is not my biological brother. But it’s almost like he is." He starts explaining. "His mother used to work in our house when we were younger. She was a single mother, no husband, and no family to run to. It was just the two of them in the world."

He’s talking in past tense.

"One day, she had gone to visit her dead mother’s grave with Alan, and while they were returning, they t with an accident."

"Oh no."

"The brakes of the bus they took malfunctioned and lots of people lost their lives. Only a few survived. Alan was part of the lucky few. While Laura, his mother, she was part of the man that lost their lives."

"Mom regretted it a lot because she had wanted Laura to take one of our cars. She had offered to have a driver take them to and from their destination. But Laura had insisted on taking the bus. Mom blas herself, she said she was feeling uneasy about the trip the mont Laura ntioned it."

Dear God, I don’t even know what to say.
