The car sped down the road.
Inside the vehicle, Ji Wei sat alone in the backseat, streetlights flickering across her delicate features. She seed lost in thought, a heaviness clouding her expression.
Her birthday was less than half an hour away, yet Ji Wei felt as if she was carrying sothing dangerous, incapable of finding peace.
Those hallucinogenic drugs—they were Gu Moqian’s.
At the thought of this, her heart felt as though it was crushed under the weight of a boulder, overcoming her with an unspeakable sadness.
What had happened to him? Why would he hide sothing so important from her?
"Madam, we’ve arrived."
The car ca to a stop. The driver got out and opened the door for her, but Ji Wei remained oblivious.
The driver had to speak again, "Madam?"
Ji Wei finally snapped out of her reverie, nodding apologetically to the driver before gathering her skirt and stepping out of the car. Her heels touched the ground, and when she looked up, she saw Gu Moqian standing in front of the Maybach. He must’ve arrived earlier.
The mont Ji Wei laid eyes on Gu Moqian, the image of that box of dication resurfaced, and an inexplicable ache swelled in her chest. The words she wanted to say caught in her throat.
She stood frozen on the spot, her gaze fixed on him without blinking.
Even though they had seen each other just that morning, the way Ji Wei looked at him now seed as if an eternity had passed.
Noticing sothing was amiss, Gu Moqian quickly walked toward her, his tone concerned, "What’s wrong?"
Ji Wei promptly shook her head, "Nothing..."
She forced herself to swallow back her tears.
"Upset that I didn’t personally pick you up from ho?" Gu Moqian guessed, his deep black eyes landing on her slightly reddened lids.
"No." Ji Wei did her best to smile, "Mo Qian, don’t just stand here. Let’s go inside."
She instinctively latched onto his arm.
Yet, Gu Moqian didn’t move, his eyes continuing to linger on her.
Ji Wei’s heart raced uneasily under his scrutiny, afraid of exposing her inner turmoil. She abruptly found an excuse, "Mo Qian, I suddenly feel a little thirsty..."
"There’s a convenience store nearby. Wait in the car for a mont, and I’ll go buy so water," Gu Moqian said before heading toward the store.
Ji Wei had actually wanted to urge him to go quickly to the banquet hall, but instead, he insisted on personally buying her water...
Watching his slightly lean figure retreating, Ji Wei’s nose tingled again. She hurriedly tilted her head back to stop her tears from falling.
If her makeup smudged, Gu Moqian would notice.
She didn’t get back into the car, choosing instead to stand quietly in place, waiting for his return.
A few minutes later, Gu Moqian returned with the water bottle.
From afar, he saw Ji Wei still standing where he had left her, dressed in the floor-length pale blue gown he had personally picked for her. The dress accentuated her graceful neckline, her collarbone beautifully exposed, while a teardrop-shaped blue diamond necklace adorned her neck. The gown’s trailing design made her look remarkably elegant and captivating.
She had abandoned her usual loose hairstyle, sweeping her hair into an updo that revealed her fair neck and ears, which further highlighted the exquisite elegance of her striking features.
Gu Moqian’s footsteps halted montarily, his eyes glimring with astonishnt.
"Mrs. Gu looks stunning tonight." He approached and handed her the bottle of water, generously offering his praise.
Ji Wei hesitantly accepted the water bottle, her expression montarily dazed as if she hadn’t heard his complint.
At that mont, a voice scread inside her mind: Ask him! Ask him why he’s using those drugs!
"Why are you spacing out, hmm?"
Gu Moqian raised a hand to gently touch the pale curve of her ear. His fingers brushed against the teardrop-shaped blue pendant hanging from her earlobe, a cool sensation passing between his palm.
Her ears were Ji Wei’s most sensitive spot. That tender touch from him sent a sudden shiver through her, jolting her back to reality.
