"Spells are the key defining part of mages. Mages are weak all-around, they are lacking in offense, defense, speed, stamina and all other physical aspects."

The professor had began a short lecture on spells.

’Is he really doing this?’

Ezra thought.

When he had first heard spells he assud that the man had ant that they would use their most powerful spells.

Surprisingly, he was giving a lecture.

"However, they are able to use mana, fine tune it and change its nature, gifting it with destructive capabilities."

And it was quite good.

It reminded him of his other lecture at the assassin departnt.

"Mages have the potential to beco the strongest class in the world, but, it depends on how magic is used."

The man took a deep breath, letting his voice settle.

"So, for today, we’ll be working on spells."

’What?’

He couldn’t believe it.

Just seconds ago he had been acting like it was going to be a normal class.

And then it all acted too quickly.

They were taken to the training room.

"The maximum level of spells you’re allowed to use is Interdiate-rank, anything higher and you’ll be disqualified."

He inford them.

Though, to be honest, none of them knew anything higher than interdiate.

The highest after interdiate was advanced, and there was no first year that was able to cast them. It wasn’t until the second year that advanced-ranked spells were taught.

On the matter of interdiate-rank, there were few first-years who were able to cast them.

"First, Celestine Vaelthorne."

He called out.

She walked out from the crowd of students and positioned herself near the dummy.

It wasn’t the sa dummy as before, this one could actually be damaged.

"Fleeting gale, moving unseen, take shape and sever all before — Wind Blade!"

Ezra watched her as she chanted and connected the magic circuit.

The mana around her whirled.

She slashed her hand at the air.

A visible slash through air materialized.

It struck the dummy cleanly on the neck, making its head fall onto the ground.

"She used an interdiate-ranked spell...."

Her magic was strong.

He turned towards the professor.

’Strange.’

The man had a complicated look on his face as he stared at the dummy, its head had reford.

But it only lasted for a second before it changed.

"Next, Yvette Von Selwyn."

After Celestine had finished her demonstration, they moved on.

"Woven in lightning, divine wrath, roar with the wrath of the skies— Storm Spear!"

Lightning crackled at her fingertips, diverging in different parts before dying out.

A Spear slowly took shape in her hands as she ford the magic circuit.

Then, she raised it above her head....

And threw it forward.

Lightning crackled as it surged forward, piercing straight through the dummy’s head.

"Another interdiate-ranked."

He noted.

He had seen both spells before, in the interdiate-rank they were on the lower end.

But still, they were interdiate-ranked spells.

"Maybe I should try doing that."

He could protect his rank as the top first year in the magic departnt, that was important as he was the lowest ranked in the assassin departnt.

Even if this wasn’t one that would determine their rank, it would still be their first display of power.

"Since getting picked on isn’t working, I might as well just aim for the top."

Or at least close to the top.

For that he would have to use an interdiate-ranked spell.

The lower end interdiate-ranked spells weren’t hard to find in educational institutes, but people on their level weren’t supposed to be able to cast them.

Unless they were very talented....

Soon enough, she left and was replaced by a boy this ti.

"Ember of creation, gather in my palm, burn bright and-"

His chant stopped halfway.

’Wasn’t that another interdiate-ranked spell?’

He mused.

The boy stopped his chant and doubled over, clutching his hand in pain.

The professor, Arthur, watched him for a few seconds.

"This is what happens when you try to use a spell you have no knowledge on, just because you see the spell being used once doesn’t an you’ll be able to cast it.

The naked eye cannot perceive; the mana flow and the magic circuit."

He then glanced at the state of the boy who was still suffering from the backlash of the spell.

"Luckily, this was only an interdiate spell, so the backlash isn’t severe."

He wasn’t addressing the student who had failed to cast a spell.

He was addressing the class, using the opportunity to explain what happens when you try a spell you aren’t ready for.

The student was ignored.

"Next."

The boy was taken to the infirmary, and it continued.

The next person used a beginner-ranked spell, obviously wary of the implications of failing to cast it.

Even though the first two had set the bar, no one was willing to try another interdiate-ranked spell.

’If I try it, would it be foolish.’

He wondered as they continued.

One after the other they struck the dummy.

"Next, Ezra Ashborn."

He moved through the crowd of students and went forward, staying where the others had stood while casting.

"You can start."

He did a slight nod, a nod in which he wasn’t sure anyone noticed.

’I’ll do it.’

The interdiate-ranked spell.

He would do it.

At the very least he hoped it wouldn’t backfire.

He closed his eyes to focus.

Before he started the chant, he directed the mana in his body through the pathways, moving them through his veins and taking as much as he could through the veins of his right-hand.

While chanting he had to keep the mana from going down back to the reserves.

Then, he started the chant.

"Woven in lightning. Divine wrath. Roar with the wrath of the skies...."

His chant was slow as he ford the magic circuit.

Slowly, a Spear ford. A Spear made of lightning.

It crackled, Ezra found it hard to keep it in place as it ford.

It slowly took shape....

And when it was done, he adjusted his footing, raising the Spear high over his head.

"....Storm Spear."

He threw it forward, putting all his weight behind it.
