"Say that again," the don commanded, "but loud and clear like you an it." His loud voice and harshness imdiately told her about the offence that she had committed in his presence.
No man in power liked to be questioned and she had done just that and if not enough Evelyn had accused him.
Evelyn gulped. "I-I—"
"Don’t fucking stutter in front of now. You sure as hell did not stutter when you accused of not informing you." The don snapped, making her jump.
Evelyn ssed up. She ssed up badly and realised that a little late. By the way the don glared at her it was obvious that she had gone too far and angered him.
She shrank back but the Don did not stop.
"If you think that it is my duty in any way to inform you what is going on in the lives of your friends you are dead wrong Evelyn and I am not going to correct you on that." He pointed his finger at her, "it ain’t my duty now and it will not be my duty ever. Do you understand?"
She nodded hurriedly in an attempt to calm the don down and get him off her case.
"I am sorry." She began. "I really should not have talked like that, I don’t know what ca over ."
She looked at Salvatore but he did not reply, probing had to say sothing else, " do you know. . You know how long it has been for his accident to happen?"
He gave her a small and curt nod. "I told you that before. It was before your Father’s death."
Shit. That he had told her but she had forgotten that information in order for them to move from her ssy bit.
"Do you mind if I visit him then?" Evelyn asked the main question that she had been holding back from after she had been mocked. "He has been a friend and he has helped . I would really like to visit him if it is okay with you."
Salvatore took a huge breath in as if conflicted before answering her, "the problem with the entire situation is that every household will have my guards stripped of their guns and I do not want to send you an arm into the house of soone else."
She licked her quickly before saying, "but they have been a friend and an associate of my father. They would never do anything that would hurt ."
Salvatore chuckled and shook his head making Evelyn blush. She was well aware of what their action ant by now. It ant that she was wrong and she was just not wrong but naively wrong.
"I do not understand what your father has taught you," Salvatore said as he scratched his forehead with one finger, "even my mother appears to no more than you do and she is a civilian Evelyn."
Evelyn realised the aning of the insult. No matter how long it would be for civilians to be married into the organised cri family they would never be let inside the business or know what was going on even remotely close.
For Salvatore to say that she was more underwear and uneducated than Alexis was one of the greatest insults she could ever receive.
"It does not matter what they work because they were your father’s associates or as you called ’friends’," he spat, "your father is developed and the ties that he made order with him. Unless you make the ties, the last act by his associates was coming to his funeral and that is it."
She just closed her eyes and placed her face in her hands in embarrassnt. She felt humiliated for forgetting that.
Evelyn had always lived her lies close off from everyone else and inside the walls of a house. That was enough for her to forget how the world worked, especially the part that she lived in.
Of course the ties he made were gone because he no longer had anything to offer them in return. The sa was with Angelo and she had taken Evelyn in his protection forever because of the fact that her father had handed over their organisation to Angelo.
"Sorry,* she muttered under her breath and stood up. "I didn’t an to be so stupid. I have never been involved in this much and just. . ." "I got the picture." Salvatore intervened, taking the burden off her shoulders.
To Evelyn, for a mont, he appeared to be in heavy conflict. It was for the first ti that the dawn did not et her eyes while his mind was thinking of sothing.
Finally Salvatore’s eyes t hers, "I understand that you have been behind the closed walls and even though I personally think your father should have involved you more, it is not your fault that you . ." Salvatore fell silent for a mont as he searched for the right word, "tend to forget sotis what things an."
It was dangerous to assu things in a criminal organisation. It was get set and go. There was no ti given to just think and to sit. That could cause soone their life.
Nonetheless, Evelyn appreciated his effort to actually consider what she was thinking. Otherwise he could have completely disregarded her feelings.
"Thank you, don." She bowed her head a little yet continued to stand there a little awkwardly not wanting to sit without permission again since it was her who got up.
Salvatore nodded and stood up. "Do you really want to go to his house?" He asked as he took a step near her and stood in front of her staring her down.
She nodded, staring up at him and suddenly feeling very conscious of herself with the closeness that they had. She could not help but take a step back.
"Are you sure, Evelyn?" Salvatore tilted his head as he asked her again and Evelyn wondered what he was playing at.
"Yes Don,’’ she said, "I am sure."
