Chapter 149: Chapter 161: I Take Responsibility For Her Life (2) Chapter 149: Chapter 161: I Take Responsibility For Her Life (2) Before taking a few steps, the old lady’s voice rang again: “Sir, you haven’t paid yet.”

Elijah Smith let out an “Oh,” pulled out his wallet from his pocket, handed a hundred-dollar bill to the old lady, and without waiting for her to give change, he furrowed his brows, grabbed the bag of chestnuts, and left the store.

Elijah handed the chestnuts to Evelyn Osbert, and as he started the car, the old lady who sold the chestnuts ca running after them. She knocked on the car window, and Elijah impatiently rolled it down. The old lady handed in so change, but Elijah didn’t take it. Instead, Evelyn smiled and said “Thank you” before accepting it.

Once Elijah’s car had driven a bit further, Evelyn stuffed the change into the car’s storage compartnt, took out a chestnut, and began peeling it, saying: “Elijah, why did you leave without waiting for the change?”

Elijah didn’t respond, just staring at the neon lights outside the window as they passed by, growing increasingly annoyed.

It wasn’t until the car stopped in the Smith family’s yard that Elijah finally turned off the engine, reminded by Evelyn’s gentle voice. He grabbed the items inside the car and followed Evelyn out.

Back in Evelyn’s bedroom, Elijah poured a glass of warm water for her. He watched as she took her dicine and lay down in bed, falling asleep. Only then did he leave her room.

Glancing at the ti on his wrist, it was just 11 PM, still early. On any other night, he would be hanging out at so vice-ridden places, but today he had no interest. He lingered at Evelyn’s door for a while before sheepishly walking to his own bedroom next door.

It had been about half a month since he last returned to the Smith ho. His room had been neatly tidied by the servants, with new bedsheets and quilt covers. Exhausted, he lay on the soft bed and closed his eyes. The bizarre images in his mind grew increasingly clear, all featuring Isabel Smith, constantly swaying.

Ultimately, the swaying irritated him so much that he abruptly sat up in bed. Grabbing the watch he’d taken off and placed beside him, he checked the ti: only twenty minutes had passed. Annoyed, he threw the watch violently onto the ground, stood up, walked to the water dispenser, and poured a glass of water. Then, turning around, his eyes happened to sweep over a shelf where a large photo fra hung, holding a family portrait of him, Isabel, and their parents.

In the picture, he was only eight years old, looking very naive in his well-fitting blue kid’s suit, with a red bow tie around his chest, nestled against his mother. Beside him stood a significantly taller Isabel, wearing a blue dress tied with a red ribbon, sporting a neat ponytail, and sweetly leaning against their father’s chest, smiling.

The family portrait was taken on his eighth birthday. At that ti, he still lived a carefree life, while Isabel had just entered adolescence, already so stunningly beautiful.

Elijah stared at the photo for a while before slowly shifting his gaze away. He walked to his bed, feeling sowhat weak, and sat down. He took out a cigarette, lit it, and took several deep drags before impulsively pulling out his mobile phone, intending to call so friends who were hanging out with him that night.

But, finding their phone numbers, Elijah hesitated with his finger hovering over the call button, and ended up throwing his mobile phone violently on the floor instead.

His force was too great, causing the phone to shatter.

Elijah felt sothing like a layer of fire burning in his heart, so intense that he couldn’t vent it anywhere!

If it weren’t for Isabel, his parents wouldn’t be dead. If it weren’t for Isabel.
