58: Chapter 58: Burial 58: Chapter 58: Burial The bodies of the rebels were taken down from the gallows and buried on the outskirts of the town, a process done as stipulated by Violet, and no objections were raised during the exercise.

All seed to take place smoothly as though intended, but there was a different story unfolding behind the scenes.

A story unbeknownst to Violet.

On the outskirts of every town, there lay a vast graveyard, where countless bodies naturally rested.

However, those who had the privilege to be laid in the graveyard after death were usually aristocrats or respectable rich n.

Not because the Empire forbade commoners from having burials, but because the process was extravagantly expensive.

Most ordinary folks couldn’t afford it.

Therefore, Violet’s instinctive request to have the guards bury the rebels – a task carried out by rely digging a hole – was an unimaginable course of action by any standard.

Had the Mayor been around, he would certainly have objected to such an act, but unfortunately, he was stuck in a joyless dungeon.

No other voices rose to stop her, a circumstance that left many in the village unsettled.

In their world, a proper burial was an honor signifying that the bereaved household had the wealth to accommodate the deceased.

Those not wealthy enough to afford magical seclusion for the deceased risked having their corpses incinerated by the Mayor for posing a threat to the town’s safety.

Such was the source of discontent and unease amongst the commoners.

Regardless of location, double standards always stirred disdain.

Simply being buried in the ground did not an that these bodies would rest in peace, quietly decomposing.

They would beco the nightmares that people fear at night, and tales of the Undead awakening were rife in so towns.

Magic!

It could resurrect the dead.

Could there be anything more terrifying in this world?

Fearing that the deceased would kill a living person, when a commoner died and they didn’t have the wealth for magic protection, most of them were incinerated to ashes and their remaining bones were scattered and buried as much as possible.

This was all because of magic!

Magic has the power to awaken the sleeping dead.

If the bodies aren’t thoroughly burned and the bones aren’t scattered and buried to prevent gathering through magic, in the future, countless Undead will rise again.

Once their number reaches a certain threshold, they’ll turn into the nightmare that the living least want and dare not face.

This is the primary reason for people’s fear and even hatred of magic.

All of this is due to the damn magic in this world!

Magic prevents the dead from finding peace.

Apart from completely incinerating the corpses, the only other thod to resist the encroachnt of magic is to use magic itself.

Unless protected by magic, or a substantial amount of money is spent on purchasing a tal coffin, the body will eventually stand up again.

It’s just a matter of sooner or later.

However, all of this is unknown to Violet!

She carried out this action purely based on instinct.

The undertaker of the town, although not understanding why no one stopped Violet, wouldn’t reject money.

He would do anything related to the corpses, which of course includes this sort of digging job — as long as he could earn money, it didn’t matter what the task was.

However, the amount of money paid and the work done remained consistent.

The person paying him was a notoriously stingy tax collector, who only knew how to extort money from others.

Spending even a penny seed to him as if he was losing his life.

And it was because a rcenary captain had his knife to the tax collector’s throat, forcing him to choose between actual death and a fate worse than death, that he chose the latter.

In order to avoid paying gold coins, he reluctantly took out ten dirty silver coins.

The undertaker highly suspected that if the tax collector had enough copper coins, he might even take out a hundred copper coins!

Because of the tax collector’s attitude, the undertaker was extrely angry about his work.

He was digging stones out of the muddy soil in the area most prone to waterlogging like he was digging a grave for the tax collector.

But he knew exactly why he was doing this, because he knew he was only burying a few rebels.

No one cares about them.

So their bodies were not that important, aning, just like serving the nobles, the undertaker didn’t need to dig large, deep pits for them.

The land here was filled with hard and tiny stones, countless weeds interlaced.

If there is no livestock or magic to help plow the field, this place would turn into a barren land, completely unsuitable for cultivation.

Similarly, if you want to bury a person, digging a pit will also beco extrely hard labor.

The ravening undertaker only dug shallow pits, then threw his shovel on the ground and stood up from the dilapidated mud ground.

Groundwater had already gushed up from the earth at this ti.

Without the obstruction of soil, these bodies would undoubtedly stand up faster.

Amid the residents’ concerns, the corpses were thrown into the muddy pits.

At the sa ti, Violet, pretending to be a shaman, stepped forward, waving her Magic Mace, posing and waving in a way that didn’t carry any real efficacy.

Not until she had had her fun did she stop, casting a Holy Light Skill on the bodies.

In an instant, all the remaining souls in the bodies were completely wiped out.

No matter how they were invaded by magic, they would not stand up again.

This ti, they truly beca dead corpses.

And while Violet was praying in words she didn’t understand herself – wishing them eternal rest – the villagers, attracted by the miraculous glow, sneered, thinking, “Who would believe that!”

They had even started placing private bets on how long these hastily buried corpses would stand up.

However, what awaited them was ultimately disappointnt.

Once this matter was handled, Violet began to contemplate trying sothing new and undertaking a change.

She knew that in this world, there was no religion because the power of magic had replaced all else, making people’s lives more convenient.

But because of this, people also understand how far magic can go!

The power of magic was indomitably potent, a fact etched deep into people’s hearts.
