The boarding room was on fire, argunts and the shareholders were seeking answers.

Brandon pinched between his brows. "Can everyone calm down?"

One of them bit out, "Calm down? In this situation? It’s been more than a week. The project we invested in has been stopped and for what reason? Where is Evelyn? What is happening? We were assured before we put in our investnt and right now we are not even given a proper reason as to why this is happening."

Everyone else nodded, agreeing with him.

Brandon ran his fingers through his hair, stressed out. He’d been trying to control this situation as much as he could but nothing was working. Evelyn was a ss to even co into work because if she did and they saw her the way she was, it was only going to make the situation wor—

The door to the eting room pushed open.

Mia stepped in.

Everyone turned their heads, watching her bow deeply. Right after, a pair of heels cut through before soone fully walked in, the door shut behind them.

They flickered their eyes.

It was Evelyn.

She was in a suit skirt, and jacket, brown hair rolled up into a neat bun. Her dark circles were nowhere to be seen and she held a polite smile.

Everyone stood up and as they bowed to her, she bowed to them as well before making her way over to take her seat at the head chair.

"Greetings everyone," she said.

They watched her quietly, wanting to understand what was going on.

Her smile never wavered. "I understand that things haven’t gone accordingly and as planned, but there is a good reason behind it. Although it was a personal attack, I could not risk having the project progress through without my surveillance. That aside, I want to assure every one of you that nothing has gone wrong with this project. You didn’t make a mistake investing, and as of today, everything is back online and it’s smooth sailing."

"Now—" She stood up. "—I would like to sincerely apologize to every one of you for such a delay. It was not intentional, and everything that has happened to , which none of you were aware of, was unexpected. It ca out of the blue and I didn’t have the chance to inform you of the delay of the project. I hope we can all put it aside. You all will be compensated accordingly as well."

"Please, accept my apology!" as she implored, she deeply bowed to them.

The shareholders glanced at each other and as if they had all co to an agreent, they nodded, a little smile erging on their faces.

One of them spoke, "Well, this can be put aside of course. As long as the project is back on track now and our investnt was not for nothing."

"You have nothing to worry about," Evelyn said. "Every investnt counts."

The eting continued with every other topic covered and eventually, it ca to an end.

Everyone else left and in the room, it was just her and Brandon. She let out a soft breath, rising to her feet. She was just about to leave, when he ca after her, grabbing her arm.

She glanced at him. "What?"

"Are you okay?"

"Yes?"

"Everlyn," his tone sounded unconvinced.

Evelyn dragged her fingers through her hair, asking, "Why wouldn’t I be okay?"

"That’s—"

"The last ti we spoke, Brandon, you said it yourself. I can’t sit moping around. Zane is gone and there is nothing I can do about it. I’m in pain, but no one can understand that. So I can only fix myself up and try to distract myself. Because sitting does not make things any better."

"So." She took a deep breath. "If you’re asking if I’m okay, no, I’m not okay at all. It hurts. I miss the man I love and it eats up, kills that I never even got to tell him how I felt or apologized for how I had been. But I also want to be okay. He saved and I’m sure he wouldn’t want to feel this way. If I continue this way, my condition might worsen and therapy or any of that sort of thing is the last thing I ever want to resort to. Do you understand, Brandon?"

Brandon stared at her. Without saying a word, he grabbed her and pulled her in, hugging her.

He caressed her hair, sighing softly with a gentle look in his eyes. "I’m sorry."

Evelyn didn’t say word. But she also didn’t pull away from him.

"I intend to speak to his brothers today and find out for myself if there is any news concerning Zayne. We can’t sit around waiting for them to contact us. So, would you like to co with ?"

Evelyn pulled back to stare at him. "To where?"

"To visit them and find out if Zayne Mancini is truly gone."

She swallowed. Her chest was pounding. Not knowing has kept her going. But if it does turn out he truly is gone, what would she do? How would she cope?

Still she wanted answers. She ached to know what had happened to the man she loved. She wanted to grasp at any little hope, every possibility that he was still alive.

Her fists clenched. "Okay. I’ll co with you."

Lincoln paced back and forth in his living room, eyes shifting to the enveloped paper on the table.

The test result was back and even though he felt like he already knew what was going on, he was still afraid to confirm it.

Was her mother not joking back then? Had she ant those claims?

Swallowing and forcing himself, he picked up the envelope, tore it open and took out the paper.

Unflipping it, he read through the contents.

Yes, Evelyn was her biological daughter, it was clear as day. There was no doubt about it. After all, this wasn’t the first DNA test he’d ever done.

But looking at his blood results, it was completely normal and human. Evelyn’s blood result however...
