Valerio slowly turned his head, sighting Zayne. He jolted, glancing at his n, who without even speaking a word, ordered them to fire at him.
Gunshots were resounding everywhere and Luca who saw this as an opportunity crawled away, as far as he could, trying to get out of the house.
"Don’t you move," Zayne ordered, bringing him to a stop. All Valerio’s n were down. "No one takes a step out of this building until I say so."
He had his weapon aid at Valerio who was on the floor on his butt, clutching his bleeding hand. His shoulders were rising and falling in heavy breathing.
Luca was afraid.
Wasn’t this man Zayne Mancini? But who was to say that he wasn’t as dangerous as Valerio? If he moved, what would he do? Would he shoot him dead? He gulped, breathing heavily.
"Where is she?" Zayne questioned Valerio.
Valerio wouldn’t talk. Instead, he stared at him.
"Don’t make repeat myself," Zayne warned.
"Why would I tell you where she is?" Valerio grinned, chuckling. "Evelyn was mine first. You stole her, and I simply took her back—"
Zayne fired another shot, this ti hitting his foot. Valerio’s scream erupted in the room and his eyes rolled into the back of his head, the pain too overwhelming for him to bear.
Zayne tossed the gun aside. He stord toward him, grasping him by the collar of his shirt to hit him if he ant getting answers out of him, but soone tapped at his shoulder.
He snapped around imdiately, stopping at the man who was a beat-up ss, with a bloody face.
"A-are you looking for Evelyn?" Luca asked.
Zayne’s pupils dilated. "What do you know?!"
"She’s already escaped," Luca said. "I-I helped her get away from here. I told her to keep running and find soone she could use their phone to call anyone who could help. Since you’re here, d-did she get to you? Was she able to..."
His words trailed off at the horrified look on Zayne’s face.
"What’s wrong?" he asked.
"Shit!" Zayne spat out. When Evelyn had called him earlier, she’d been cut off by soone and he’d thought it was Valerio.
Who was it? Who had she t and used his phone? What did they do to her?
He barged past Luca, rushing out of the building towards his car. Luca was confused, but he was quick to follow him, knowing he couldn’t stay here. He was done with working for Valerio. It wasn’t like he’d been here for years because he wanted to.
"I’m coming with you!" he shouted at Zayne.
Zayne didn’t give him a response, getting into the car and slamming the door shut. Luca rushed over before he could drive off, hopping into the driver’s seat and riding off with him.
Zayne eyed him once.
"I helped her, I think it’s only right that I co with you. Besides, I think she’s worried about ," Luca said on his device.
Zayne ignored him, taking a reverse before driving off the road.
The farther he drove, the more carefully he looked side by side, watching out for her, anywhere he could find her.
"How long has it been since she escaped?"
"Almost an hour now," Luca responded. "She should have run far enough by now."
——
Evelyn stared at the sea beneath the bridge she was standing on. The man held her close to it, the pistol still pressed against her temple. He had her hands locked behind her back, giving her no chance to fight him.
"I told you I can pay you however much you may want from him."
"But it doesn’t make sense," Gallo said. "If you’re so rich, why is a woman like you out here, held hostage by Valerio? I an, where is your family? You said they were who again?"
"Darkwood. My family is the Darkwood family, okay?" she breathed heavily, staring fearfully at the water. If she fell into this, she was bound to drown. She had never wished so much than she did in this mont she knew how to swim.
Why had she never learned?
"Your family is the Darkwood family, yet they haven’t co looking for you?" Gallo chuckled, amused. "Wait, what is your na again?"
"Evelyn. Evelyn Darkwood." She was answering as quickly as she could.
Gallow went silent. And that worried her.
She was quick to add, "I’m not lying. I am Evelyn Darkwood and yes, I’m the CEO of the Darkwood group. That is why I said I could pay you however much Valerio offered—"
"You’re Evelyn Darkwood?" Gallow questioned, interrupting her.
She rapidly nodded. "I am. And I’m not lying."
"Then, why haven’t they co looking for you?"
He asked, frowning.
"I just looked you up on the internet. There is no news of you missing, no one is searching for you, so there can only be one possibility. You are just a lookalike trying to fool . What? If I let you go, you’ll call the police on instead of paying ?" Gallo chuckled. "I know what kind of a person you are. Look-alikes that fuck around with people using rich people’s nas. I’m not falling for those old tactics."
"I’m not lying!" she yelled at him, frustrated. "I’m telling you that I’m not lying. I don’t know why you don’t believe , but—"
A car pulled up, the headlights hitting them.
Evelyn watched with the man. Her stomach twisted, thinking it was Valerio. She was done for, she was—
"Evelyn!"
That voice.
She knew that voice.
It couldn’t be in her head, could it?
"Zayjne..?" She stuttered, "Z-zayne?"
He walked out into their view, Luca following behind them.
Gallo screwed his face. "Back off."
"Put the gun down!" Zayne asked. "Now."
"And why should I do that?" He smirked. "You don’t just co here and tell what to do. I decide whether to let her go or not, and you need to back off, else, I’m putting a bullet through her head. You choose."
Luca swallowed, taking a step back first.
Zayne was unmoving. "Don’t make kill you."
"Kill ?" Gallo chuckled. "What can you even do?"
He pulled at the trigger a bit. "I’m only going to count to three. One, Two, Thre—"
It was too quick, too fast, but the last thing Gallo saw was a movent too quick for him to understand and then he felt a sharp cut through his throat, one that suddenly made it hard for him to breathe or speak.
What’s...happening?
