“I accept them all,” said Li Yan without even blinking. He sat up, looked around, and noticed that he was at a wharf near dusk, with only a handful of people scattered about the dock.

On the sea, ironclad steamships with white smoke billowing from their chimneys were moored. A glance ashore revealed old shacks and the dirty, tattered canvas on the ground, with slogans such as chinks, fuck off scrawled on them. Beyond the wharf lay scattered red brick factories, from which huge noises and plus of black smoke rose and mingled in the sky.

A dragon-like stretch of railway crossed over the water, towns, chain-link fences, and forests, bending dramatically on its way towards the distant, cloud-rising mountain range…

“Woo woo woo woo woo!”

Suddenly, the steam whistle blew. The tal pistons moved up and down, and atop the train was a statue of an armless human figure. The strangely designed chanical railcar moved along the tracks, passing large no-entry signs, and headed upwards into the high mountains.

Li Yan could even make out through the train windows gentlen in top hats with large bellies and laughing ladies in dresses, covering their faces with fans.

His gaze followed the train and tracks into the distance, where Gothic Revival-style castles stood cloud-high, and the setting sun and colorful fireworks made everything within the high mountain castle look like a fairyland.

There were a stock exchange, theaters, churches, and delicately designed storefronts along the streets. The magnificent buildings bore huge wooden billboards that read Welco to San Francisco. Steam billowed, and bright yellow airships drifted slowly across the sky, their tallic spires inspiring awe. The array of machines serving humankind dazzled the eyes; beneath their cold exteriors lay the fiery and surging ambition of man attempting to control nature.

A wave of nausea-inducing fishy sll wafted over, and Li Yan withdrew his gaze.

The cart full of dead fish was carelessly stacked, and a few emaciated famine victims stood there sparsely, without exception, all of them had Asian faces. They mostly wore oily braids, with a patch of hair shaved off their skulls, and looked numb.

“You new arrivals! Get these moved down, then follow ,” soone commanded in Cantonese, standing on the dock, also with the Chinese features of black hair and yellow skin, short and overweight, with a bulbous nose and beady eyes, and a long mustache. One of his legs was slightly limp, and although he was short, his cowboy dress contrasted with the braid he wore, giving him an incongruous appearance. Behind him stood several muscular thugs, even including burly foreigners with faces full of flesh.

The famine victims began to move at the command, except for Li Yan, who remained indifferent.

A sailor who was herding the famine victims ca over to push Li Yan but was instead flung away with great force, coughing up blood as he fell into the sea. This sudden action attracted everyone’s attention. Other sailors ard with clubs and even guns imdiately surrounded him, but before they could react, a thick, terrifying odor suffused the area, causing severe ringing in people’s ears at different tis. So even knelt on the ground, vomiting profusely.

The mustachioed man in charge, who was quite far from the commotion, noticed the disturbance and imdiately limped over. After surveying the scene, he asked Li Yan, the only person still standing on the ship, with a somber voice, “What are you doing?”

Li Yan was looking down at himself; like the other famine victims, he was dressed in tattered clothes, stained with mud. Without a doubt, this was his status in this world.

In this era’s San Francisco, there was a large gathering of Chinese laborers. Most of them had co seeking a ans of survival to escape famine, or had been deceived by unscrupulous businessn’s contracts, or had been outright trafficked. A large number of Chinese people congregated here to work on the docks, their wages much lower than the locals, subject to cruel abuse and discrimination. anwhile, near the opium dens and brothels, the thugs engaged in deadly fights and the ruffians stirring up trouble were also not lacking Chinese faces.

Seeing that Li Yan didn’t respond, the mustachioed man’s face clearly flashed with a vicious expression, but for so reason, as soon as this tall man covered in mud, nearly one ter ninety tall, glanced at him casually, he lost the courage to scold him.

The mustachioed man cautiously took two steps back and asked, “What’s your na?”

“Li Yan,” was the casual reply from Li Yan.

The mustachioed man gestured for an assistant, snatched a roster from his hands, and began flipping through it irritably. Soon he found Li Yan’s na, and a triumphant expression quickly danced across his face.

“Ah, Li Yan! I know you, you were trafficked here by Governor Liu! You’re one of the demon people captured after the governnt suppressed the Fist Rebellion! You were supposed to be beheaded!”

He closed the ledger, circling Li Yan with a sneer, “You paid the money, and Governor Liu saved your life, so you could be sold here to work like a piglet. I don’t know how fierce and evil you were back in China, but I hope you understand the situation you’re in now.”

The mustachioed man stopped in front of Li Yan and said with a smile, “You can call Mr. Wu. I cooperate with Aricans to build railways. As long as you work hard and don’t make trouble, you can earn enough money to settle down here and maybe even beco a wealthy man. Of course, just like everyone else, you’ll have to pay off your passage to co here, with a year’s wages to cover it. After a year, you can start making money.”

As if…

Mr. Wu sneered inwardly.

Li Yan stared straight at Mr. Wu until the latter, slightly unnerved, took a couple of steps back. Then Li Yan burst out laughing, “Of course, no problem, Mr. Wu.”

With that, Li Yan turned and walked to the stack of goods. He hoisted a box in each hand and walked down the ship, leaving the crowd with his retreating figure.

Mr. Wu’s face darkened. He had made his fortune through this kind of business, rearing a flock of thugs. He had handled ‘piglets’ numbering in the thousands, but for the first ti, he felt fear from one of them. He had a feeling that this ti, he might have bitten off more than he could chew.

Perhaps he should not have taken on Governor Liu’s business this ti.

This thought surfaced in Mr. Wu’s mind.
