Maxwell felt that he was a pretty reasonable guy. Sure, he was ruthless when it ca to things involving those he cared about, but he could be reasoned with. He could even be swayed from his line of reasoning if they put up a good enough fight. They might get intimidated along the way, but that wasn’t his fault.
It wasn’t fair to bla his facial expressions when he was listening to idiots talk. That was just who he was.
With that being said, he was pretty sure he had put on the performance of a lifeti during this whole situation. He had done his best to keep his own facial expressions under control given that Andrew was not stable right now.
He was putting on a great show of pretending that he was, but Maxwell could tell. He knew that he wasn’t. It was in the subtle way he shifted to make sure that Maxwell was always protected from others he deed as threats. That included a long list of everyone, everything, and anything you could imagine.
Maxwell had been trying not to laugh at the man, knowing he wouldn’t take it well. It wasn’t his fault he was so sensitive, and Maxwell knew he felt bad about it. He knew that Andrew was trying not to be an overbearing alpha, and that when he reacted to Maxwell’s expressions and small shifts, it was only because he cared about Maxwell deeply. Maxwell found it rather cute, honestly.
Everything took a terrible turn when the realtor who was supposed to be showing them around turned out to be a huge prick. He wasn’t as bad as so of the n his parents had sent him on dates with, but he was up there. Especially since he was mated, and was hitting on Maxwell so obviously. Andrew looked like a bull who had seen red.
Maxwell did his best to pretend he didn’t notice, or to not give him any reaction knowing that Andrew was already walking a thin line. Maxwell didn’t want to be the reason, passively, that he snapped. He wanted Andrew to fall into his rut for good reasons, happy reasons. Not because of a piece of shit that couldn’t read the room.
So, Maxwell made sure he was on his own best behaviour. He had to be there for Andrew, even if he knew that Andrew would feel bad if he found out how much Maxwell just wanted to kick this man’s knees in and call an ambulance preemptively.
Because Maxwell wasn’t the kind of man who was going to take this kind of treatnt sitting down.
So it was a bit of an irony that he was sitting down in the fucking small eting room when that idiot laughed off showing his disgusting body to not just Maxwell, but to Andrew. Maxwell, he could understand, but Andrew? He didn’t deserve to see sothing so pathetic. Maxwell had only been a few seconds away from standing up and punching the man when Andrew had quite literally, beaten him to the punch.
It was pretty therapeutic to see Andrew just lay into the man. The shouts and screams around them filled Maxwell with such a sense of peace that he couldn’t stop the shit-eating grin from splitting his face. Until the pheromones began to overtake him.
Damn him and his perpetually weak body. The dication he took every three months did help, but he was still pissed that the whole reason he had started his company hadn’t co to full fruition, at least not for him. He knew he was helping other ogas, which was great. He loved how loyal they were to him because of his company and ideals.
It just sucked that he was still unable to handle his own alpha’s pheromones when he was defending him from another alpha. Maxwell’s chest had grown tight, he had been unable to breathe. His legs got weak, his body trembled. His vision had faded slightly, but he refused to pass out. That would only set Andrew off more, and Maxwell was not going to allow his reaction to be the reason Andrew went off the deep end.
He let the others get to Andrew, dragging the two of them out of the tiny room. Everyone was more focused on the giant man who was spewing pheromones to suppress everyone in the room to notice that Maxwell was having an ergency of his own.
Andrew had murder in his eyes, and he looked an and aggressive. If anyone else saw this, they would think he was the instigator just on principle. No one would ever think that soone as big as him was actually a gentle giant. A goofy, smiling scientist who just cared about everyone.
He looked scary, he slled terrifying. He was using his pheromones, coating the whole room so that everyone wanted to collapse, fall to their knees in submission. Maxwell wished there was a window nearby so he could at least pull so fresh air into his lungs, trick himself, so that he could help Andrew. He was grateful when the realtor Kim had called for them to et next ca in and cald the situation down.
It was only a few monts later that his parents, Kim and Jenny arrived. Maxwell was glad, since more distractions ant that he could gather himself, but Andrew had only turned and tried to care for him. It was thoughtful, it was sweet, but Maxwell needed soone else to take the torch.
While Maxwell had been holding back his own emotions and feelings, he didn’t think lying to Andrew would do him any good. So, he told him the truth, and Andrew had called over so help. Maxwell hated that he needed soone besides Andrew, but that was the way it was going to be. Maxwell wasn’t even sure if his condition would get better if they mated.
It was only a theory that it would, but Maxwell was kind of...he kind of wanted to test if that was true.
When the police arrived and they zeroed in on Andrew while he was composing himself? Maxwell had also been ready to fight. He shouldn’t have worried, Kim would gladly have stepped in and taken the charges willingly if they had attempted to handcuff Andrew without even speaking to him. That didn’t change Maxwell’s feeling. He knew that Andrew stood out.
He towered over everyone. But he was a puppy. He was Maxwell’s puppy, and he would not tolerate people getting mad at him for defending Maxwell, especially when Maxwell had been seconds away from defending himself.
Maxwell had done his best to appear calm and collected for Andrew, even if it felt like his blood was about to boil out of his body. He needed the outside air as well.
Andrew answered their questions well, and Maxwell almost told them to go suck a dick to their faces, but a look from his Mom told him that he should behave. It wouldn’t do them any good if they had any issues with the law. When they asked to speak to him, he was glad that he wasn’t going to be alone with the officers as they spoke. They hadn’t let their initial interaction colour their perception of Andrew, but he was betting that they had so preconceived notions.
Maxwell wasn’t going to let that hurt Andrew. Not in the slightest.
The questions they asked weren’t invasive, not at first. Maxwell knew that they were just trying to get a basic picture, so Maxwell also showed his text conversations. He was in the sa group chat that Andrew was, but he had also been ssaging his assistant at the sa ti. Asking him to look into the man, the realtor and his mate.
Mr. Newman had found everything about the man, including his ambitions to have multiple partners, against his mate’s wishes. The police had seen this, and they clearly were pretty upset about it. Maxwell didn’t really care if they were upset, he was showing it off to show that this act was more of a threat.
Proof that Andrew might have been the one who had been outwardly violent, but Maxwell was worse, and was happy to beco a problem even for soone who served to keep the peace if he needed to. Even if he didn’t need to, actually.
He was petty, he was an, and he didn’t like that soone could get away with treating his special boy like this. Andrew was his. End of story. They had worked out where their issues had co from, and were going to get through them.
When the officers began to ask about Andrew, and who he was as a person, Maxwell snapped. He went on a tirade, berating them for even asking about his character. He went on saying that it was a miracle that Andrew hadn’t snapped before, when there weren’t any damn witnesses to prove his innocence, or any CCTV around to prove that he wasn’t the guilty one.
Andrew had been on his best behaviour all fucking day. He had more than one foot into his rut pheromones, and yet he’d managed to keep himself this composed the whole ti. Not only that, he was a newly manifested true alpha going through his first fucking rut, so the fact that he hadn’t sent him to the hospital was a damn fucking miracle. Andrew was a good person, and it shouldn’t be on him if that fucker pushed the wrong guy. Andrew had always been defending ogas his whole life before now, and Maxwell wasn’t the kind of man who would stop soone with pure intentions.
Maxwell then went on to say that if he had it his way, this place would be razed to the ground. The whole company was tarnished, ruined to him and shouldn’t be functioning if this was how they were going to treat prospective clients.
The officers just took Maxwell’s rant, listening and making notes when needed. They then, quietly, thanked Maxwell for his ti and Maxwell had to take a mont to compose himself. Jenny was there, placing her hand on his shoulder.
"Nothing will happen to him, Maxy. Not a damn thing. Kim and I won’t even let them touch a hair on his head." Jenny told him seriously, her smile on her face, but nowhere near her eyes. Maxwell wanted to snap at her, to tell her that Andrew was his, he didn’t need their help, but he caught himself.
While Andrew didn’t see it this way, he knew that Kim and Jenny saw their lack of involvent in Andrew’s life a great stain on their hearts, honour, and his Mom’s mory. They had wanted to be there for him, wanted to be his family. It was clear that Andrew had so of the family connection from May and Ford, but Kim and Jenny had wanted to be part of that too.
Maxwell couldn’t get mad at soone who was willing to throw around a family na that held old world weight, not when it ca to Andrew. Andrew wasn’t the kind of man who would normally get into trouble with the law. At least, not in Maxwell’s eyes. He was a perfect angel, and he was glad that Jenny and Kim were willing to get their hands dirty in the public eye to deal with so issues.
Maxwell wasn’t afraid to turn to old family habits if it ant keeping Andrew safe. It wouldn’t be the first ti his family was involved with dealing with a difficult situation when it ca to soone they loved.
